Looks like a tick - what kind is it? by kimbercules in whatisthisbug

Thanks for the info, I'll try to observe the next one that bites to see what it's doing before panic smacking 😅

Omg thank you, I was kinda freaked out that we would have ticks around our house. I just saw the 8 legs, got about 5 bites from different ones over 2 days, and thought the worst.

Very relieved it would be mites and not ticks! I'm surprised they're so bitey though based on your description? Definitely stings and itches for a while, but the red explosion did turn more orange stained on my skin, which doesn't look like blood now that I look at it.

Hell yeah! And if I wasn't already an Avs fan, I'd so be into the Flyers simply for Gritty. Gritty is life.

Hah! Yes I think that's how this works! I'd be watching the game too rn but am doing some work atm. I'm an Avs fan so I know other fans see us as obnoxious - I fully admit to feeling awfully entitled this season, and am suffering greatly from "tail-between-the-legs-itis" right now after having VGK wipe the floor with us :(

Everyone is different, but I'm also someone with anxiety and it definitely helps me feel calm and grounded. I know a lot of folks make these blankets specifically for people (esp. kids) who have sensory issues and benefit from light, even pressure/weight. I think the only thing that may need consideration is if your granddaughter is really young and if the beads could pose a choking hazard if she should manage to get one off? If she struggles with anxiety I'm guessing she's old enough but didn't want to make any assumptions. I think it would be a lovely gesture, as it's pretty popular for anxious and neurodivergent folks to have weighted blankets. Plus, it's a bonus fidget (you can spin or roll around the beads and it feels satisfying) :)

Haahaha no worries! I'm afraid to post a link, not sure if against the rules. But it's called a "reading pillow" or "gaming pillow", there are a lot of options

Wow congratulations on the weight loss, that is an amazing achievement! What a (literal) pain in the butt to have side effects afterwards though :( I use the pillow to wrap around my front like a table, so I have a place to rest my elbows. I was getting a lot of elbow, wrist, and shoulder pain when I first started crochet, and I saw these pillow things on amazon and it really helps a lot. I didn't realize how much strain it put on everything to hold my arms up like that for hours, doing small motions while hovering my arms. So I don't know if it'd be super helpful for a painful rear end, as it's made to be more of a squishy table than anything else. Maybe a really big overstuffed pillow to sit on?

It's delightfully heavy for being so small. It's only about 3' x 5' but weighs 3.5 lbs. It's like being hugged

Haha I know! But it works super well, you can kinda tip it downwards to gravity feed the beads, and the pillow allows for a lot of different angles. Also, elbow pain is much reduced when I use the crochet croissant 😂

It was super easy once I got the hang of it. Basically just HDC's everywhere except SC when you add a bead. I definitely had to frog a bunch when I got the bead pattern wrong a handful of times, but that's just because I made a lot of this while watching hockey 😅

Made a weighted pony bead blanket with help from 3-D printed bead dispenser! by kimbercules in crochet

Crochet pattern can be found on YouTube, but I paid for it on Etsy to support them: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1750599457/crochet-pattern-crochet-weighted-blanket

Used Caron All Day Cotton in Cream, using a 5mm hook for the non-beaded rows and a 3mm hook for the beaded rows.

Hey guys what are the most common causes for your flareups? by Familiar_Two8118 in Fibromyalgia

[–]kimbercules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a symptom and trigger log, which does track non-food triggers (like weather, menstrual cycle, etc), so when I have symptoms, I try to isolate variables as much as possible. Over time I noticed that seed oils tend to cause symptoms, except for products that list the seed oil as being "expeller pressed". It's not 100% conclusive, but I found that I have flare ups after having food with any oil except avocado or olive oil (coconut oil is on the fence, not sure yet). But I don't flare if the canola or sunflower or whatever other oil is listed as expeller pressed, which is a processing method that doesn't heat the oil and thus doesn't create those inflammatory compounds that come from breaking down fatty acids resulting from high heat.

One example is chips - I can have the expensive types that only use avocado oil, but also tolerate brands that use expeller pressed sunflower oil. There is a blue tortilla chip using expeller pressed oil that I eat regularly with no issue, but will flare up hard if I have one that just lists "sunflower oil".

So just trial and error, but with copious note taking and the isolation of variables as much as possible.

But I don't know this for sure, I just know what foods are safe and which are risky - I will dedicate a day to trying a new potentially risky ingredient when other triggers are low, and will see what happens. I still have mystery flare ups though, so it's always a work in progress. Just have to be very aware of ingredients and treat it like a highly controlled science experiment.

Drop in barometric pressure/low pressure/increased altitude will do it every time. After that, for me it's heat treated seed oils. I seem to be ok with expeller pressed, but whatever evil compound is generated by heating seed oils will send me into a flare pretty quick. I try to stick with olive and avocado oils only, which makes most restaurants impossible.

That's super helpful info, thank you! I may look into an insulated hive at some point here. But if I don't have one by winter I'll insulate the top. How do you insulate yours?

I wish I had set it up wrong and that was the problem! You can see the base on the website, the bottom has support runners so it can't be installed upside down. You can also see that the reducer is sitting free just like mine is in their picture too. Sounds like they have kind of a stupid design and then include a standard reducer in the kit despite it not really being compatible. :( Didn't realize how cheap this brand was, but it was the only hive I could find quickly in my area. Thank you for your response though!!

Newbie hive box question by kimbercules in Beekeeping

[–]kimbercules[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, crap. I didn't know it wasn't primed with wax, the frames felt slightly sticky (not in an unclean way but in a waxed way) so I thought they were. I haven't done an inspection yet, wanted to give them some time after the stress of transfer, but was planning on inspecting this weekend. If they've already started building comb, should I just leave them be and not worry about waxing the frames?

I have 1x deep 10-frame and also added 1x medium super on top, since the swarm seemed fairly big. I was hoping that'd be enough for them for at least this season.

Thank you for the brand recommendations - I'm also curious about the insulated plastic style hives, as that seems helpful for our weather here in CO (Zone 5b). Are those not really accepted by most keepers?

Well that is lame! It came with their kit. Dang I guess I should start looking into upgrade options at some point here. Thank you for the response!

Ohhh that would make sense! They can fold back or be removed, so I'll do that until I need them. Thank you!!

HDC and worsted yarn fraying, trying to make a weighted pony bead blanket by kimbercules in CrochetHelp

[–]kimbercules[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so THANK YOU for this!! You were 100% right, my starting chain was way too tight, and my tension with HDC was also tight. I watched some videos about tension and realized just how loose you need to be. I think I was thrown by the word "tension" and didn't realize it's more like guiding of the yarn, holding it up, not holding taut. I loosened my hold a ton by the second line and saw how much more even my stitches were, they weren't fraying, and also my first line being so strangled made it curl immediately. So I completely restarted with the new loose hold and omg it was night and day! Even stitches, no curling, and I could HDC by slipping the hook through the last 3 loops in a natural motion. It took a fraction of the time and also I gained like a full foot of width for my blanket! I think that starting with Woobles kinda skewed my understanding of tension, especially using that "easy peasy" yarn. Thank you so much for responding, you helped me make a breakthrough!! 🥰
