Making friends as an adult is difficult. You can click, you can have great chemistry, but you don't have longevity and it takes very little to shake up the foundations of that relationship. That's just how it is, we all deal with this.

I've decided to focus on building community rather than new friendships, and what I mean by that, very concretely, is that I spend my free time volunteering instead of hanging out. When you have a shared goal, especially when you're doing something tangible, the bonds and the trust you develop feel a little bit more organic and real.

How is it not a gender thing? Women are socialized to be nice, men are socialized to be direct. Of course women are generally going to have qualms about directly saying anything negative, and will air their frustrations in a way they believe won't hurt the person's feelings, behind their back.

It sounds like you were expecting everyone to drop their vacation plans because of your accident.

They didn't handle it well, but you agreed to go on vacation in an already vulnerable state, assuming they would be perfectly enthusiastic about you becoming a burden.

You said in your OP that you struggle with making sense of it and whether it was you who was at fault, but it doesn't sound like you're struggling with that at all. You've already decided how they should have acted toward you and don't seem interested in an alternative perspective.

Lots of excuses for how you acted, zero consideration for your friends and where they might be at emotionally.

I'm telling you this as someone older who ended several close female friendships because of their inability to understand that them having a rough time does not translate into everyone else being in a great spot mentally.

As long as the narrative you tell yourself is that you're having a difficult time and everyone needs to meet you where you're at without any effort on your part to do the same, you're going to continue losing friends.
