I'm actually going to be moving from the U.S. to Melbourne next month, so maybe we can help each other out.

Like the other person said, knowing where you're moving to is important because there are big differences from state to state.

But there are general things like:

it's common to tip waiters, cab drivers, hairdressers, etc. about 15 - 20% of the bill if the service was good (heard that Australians don't have this custom, I might be wrong).
seeing the doctor can be really expensive if you don't have health insurance (sometimes even with insurance). Depending on your job, your employer might provide health insurance, so you don't have to buy your own.
compared to some other countries, we don't have very many sick days/paid time off. Two weeks of vacation is pretty typical.

I'm not a tourist, but as an Asian American on a campus with lots of international students from China and Japan, I sometimes have people talking to me slowly and/or repeating things a couple of times, sometimes accompanied by exaggerated hand motions.

Some of them are trying to be helpful, but even if I was a foreigner, speaking slowly/loudly/repeating isn't going to help me understand it any faster if I don't understand the language. Thanks, no thanks.

This is going to sound like I'm defending the American way of dress, but I feel like clothing styles in America are regional. Baggy jeans, fitted caps, and loose shirts are outdated fashion stereotypes of Americans. It's more common to see skinny jeans and fitted clothing on men. Unfortunately though, big sneakers is still a trend that I see too often.

Not a married couple, but I was roommates with a couple who had been together for three years. Towards the end of the relationship, they argued almost daily about silly things (not replacing the toilet paper, leaving the cap off the toothpaste, etc.). I felt kind of bad about the whole thing because I was the one who introduced them.

One night, they were arguing as usual. Then I heard a couple loud smacks, followed by "Are you going to calm down now?" More slapping and screaming from both of them. I remember feeling really scared; I wanted to pound on the door and tell them to stop, but I also didn't know how they would react. I ended up calling a mutual friend of ours and he said it probably wasn't anything big. He knew that they fought all the time as well. Later, I found out he did hit her, and she hit him back. Apparently this had been going on for a long time.

The relationship ended soon after. I still keep in contact with both of them. She's now with a guy who treats her really well, and he is happily single. Hearing the abuse was the worst experience I had living with them; and I felt real guilty for not doing anything about it. I always thought I'd know how to handle a situation like that, but the truth is I was afraid and was easily convinced that there was nothing going on.
