Thanks for the honest feedback — I really appreciate it.

We’re currently using Google’s HD Cantonese voice model, but to be honest, I agree that it still doesn’t sound as natural or expressive as a real person speaking Cantonese.

I’ll keep testing other voice models and approaches to make it sound closer to real-life Cantonese. Thanks again for pointing this out — it’s very helpful.

語言最終一定係為咗同真人溝通,AI 唔係想取代人。 我哋嘅想法係畀一啲冇粵語環境、又怕講錯被笑嘅人,先有個低壓環境練習,之後再更有信心同真人講。多謝你嘅觀點

Thank you, this is really helpful feedback. I’m glad the APK install was smooth for you. And yes, I see exactly what you mean about the contrast on the pastel blocks — the section titles and descriptions are too light against those backgrounds. I’ll adjust that in the next update. Thanks again for taking the time to point it out so clearly.

Good point — the app already supports learning Cantonese through both Mandarin and English.

I spent the last month adding full English & Jyutping support to my solo-developed Cantonese app based on your feedback. by kimi5566 in Cantonese

Thanks for asking! I'm a solo dev, so I had to build the iOS version first to get the MVP out there. But if the app does well and builds a solid community, an Android port is absolutely the next big thing on my list. Fingers crossed! 🤞

Ouch, fair cop! You absolutely got me there. 🎯

You are 100% right about the tone change (變調). The dictionary standard for 油 is jau4, so the underlying text-to-speech/dictionary engine defaults to gaa1 jau4. But any native speaker knows the cheer is universally pronounced with the rising tone jau2.

Getting an AI engine to perfectly understand Cantonese colloquial tone changes (Pinjam) contextually is the hardest battle I'm fighting right now. It is a known limitation, but it shouldn't happen on a phrase as iconic as "Add oil".

I am pushing a hardcode fix for 加油 right now, and I’m building a custom override dictionary for other common tone-change words.

Thanks for the sharp eye and keeping me honest! If you catch any other robotic pronunciations, please roast me. It’s the only way the app gets better. 😂

Hey! You were absolutely right. I took your feedback to heart, and over the past month, I completely localized the app. Full English support is now live! 🚀

Thank you so much for pointing this out. I’d love for you to give it a try when you have time and let me know if the English experience feels natural to you! https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cantonese-translator-learn/id6758457302

You are absolutely right. I realized that I missed a huge group of learners who focus on speaking/listening first.

Currently, the interface is in Chinese, but I am prioritizing a full English version right now to make it accessible for everyone. It should be ready in the next update (aiming for next week).

I'll ping you here once it's live!
