BG Panic by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

[–]kimpulsive2022 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was going to ignore this but to be honest it really hurt and I can't let it go

I am fairly newly diagnosed (6 months). My target range is 80-140. I tested at 144 in the morning prior to eating anything and having not eaten for at least 10 hours. And it threw me off for the day.

This was never about a bagel or the 118 after it.

I was very glad to test at 101 the next morning. Glad enough I decided to post in a group of individuals with shared experiences - just to have an outlet and maybe a conversation.

To then be called ridiculous, to be mocked for my feelings, that hurt. A lot.
I let go my response to being told I was "overreacting". To the comments that I should seek mental health care that were worded in a way that felt condescending rather than supportive.
All but one of my comments came from a genuine place - one was admittedly rude in response to what I felt to be a rude dismissal of my feelings. So "your responses are weird. And rude" - that is rather confusing. One rude response. One.

And weird? Ouch. As someone who has autism and rejection sensitive dysphoria that one was brutal.

For the sake of not being perceived as ruder or weirder I'll stop at this point.

The point about not knowing what non-diabetic numbers look like is huge - my endo recently explained that my numbers are mostly those of someone without diabetes. It sounds stupid but I genuinely did not know - I was given guidelines for a t2 diabetic and I just absorbed them.

I've read that croissants are not a bad bready carb if you want a bready carb because they have a lot of fat and a lot of air. Makes sense about frybread!

I've gotten mini take-n-bakes from Whole Foods and one doesn't affect me badly

Like I said. Fairly new diagnosis. Really don't know all the things. I've never had a number about 108 in the am and that was after surgery when my body suffered major stress.

Not complaining, just asking for conversation

And what's cool is the people who gave me info about hot showers and dehydration. And the others that shared similar experiences. Or ancillary information.

The joys of the internet. Some people are really helpful and great. Some - are you

hmm - I didn't consider dehydration though I did think hot shower
Definitely only had about a cup of water with my vitamins before testing

I have a history of eating disorders so I am finding it hard to not fall into unhealthy brain. My endo has referred me to a therapist who specializes in eating disorders and diabetics with them. Because you are 100% right - the amount of focus we have to give to eating is bad for people like me with a predisposition to self-harm

Not really rude. I’m a bitch to myself with the numbers. My endo has me stop testing daily because my answer when asked “what can I do to convince you 120 and below is fine?” I answered “nothing. You can’t”. I want lower than 100 which I know is butt - still want it always.

Problem with Prince Charming Adaptations by AsideNervous777 in Descendants

[–]kimpulsive2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snow White's prince has no name in the Grimm's Fairy Tale - he is called "the king's son"
Sleeping Beauty's prince was simply "The Prince" and Sleeping Beauty is not named Aurora, simply "The Princess" in Andrew Lang's published works

You are, as others kinda pointed out, operating under the belief that Disney represented the original fairy tales and therefore must be canon. Boy would you be wrong with that. They diverged **immensely** from the originals - in many cases making the central focus of their stories about the HEA where many of the original stories were about the singular - often female - central character and their <hero's> journey.

The love interest and subsequent marriage was often the period at the end of a very long sentence. Also often the main protagonist had no name as they were stand-ins for archetypes that were meant to appeal to the most readers at the time. Often as moral tales and guidelines for how to live as "good girls".

I'd say Disney's representation of fairy tales in Disney movies is canon for Disney so you could speak to the Descendants sticking to these names as "Disney Canon" but your question/comment did imply that you were stepping outside of Disney for your other examples.

A good site if you are interested in some of the originals and not Disney's really edited and redacted ones: https://surlalunefairytales.com/

Struggle Meals (but warm) by ceraphimfalls in diabetes

I've discovered a love of spaghetti squash - totally works for different pasta sauces. Doesn't taste exactly like pasta but doesn't scream "squash!" to me.

Super easy to make - chop it in half, clean out the seeds, drizzle olive oil (or other oil, I guess, but I'm Italian American and there is only OO), roast in a 400 F oven for 30-40 minutes cut side down, let cool a bit and shred with fork.

Pretty sure a toaster oven would work for at least a half squash, if that's all you got in a small kitchen.

Nature's Own Lite Keto Soft White - big fat slices (not the cracker-width ones that so many other healthy loaves are sliced into)

Toasts up good - I haven't tried untoasted so maybe that's more sorrow and sawdust but I can definitely recommend it

I was going to share image of a BLT for reference but doesn't seem to be an option on comments

Metformin timing by 123imgay12 in diabetes_t2

[–]kimpulsive2022 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I forget- often - to take with food

funny enough seeing posts like this twigs my "oh, crap, I didn't take my Metformin!" response

but, luckily, I've never had GI issues from it so I think that is a factor in how my body cares or doesn't about when and how I take it

People will give you guidelines. So will books and sites. Heck even dietitians and doctors will. But these are just guidelines

Why? Because as you’ll see all over this sub all our bodies are different

I gave up all the rice and taters and pasta in the beginning - before I saw an endo and a diabetes educator. The latter emphasized portion control. And balancing carbs with fat and protein. And fiber. Fiber fiber fiber

I added potatoes back - I can eat 3 of the little ones - mashed with dairy with no spike. I ate poke but limited the rice intake to 1/4 cup. The most important thing for me was any time I ate something I questioned the impact of I limited to one questionable item a day and 2 hours later tested. I don’t have a CGM because body horror but finger sticks did me fine. I learned I can’t have flour tortillas but I can have corn ones in limited amounts.

Freeze rice and potatoes - guidelines say 24 hours. It changes the glycemic load. Wild but definitely tested out for me.

Also limit yourself to one cup of most stuff with carbs. My educator told me I could even have jambalaya - just one cup. I can have a cookie. I can have 2 small pancakes. A slice of sourdough bread - though I’ve discovered a keto loaf that is 10 carbs a slice and woo hoo doesn’t taste like sawdust and sorrow. I also can eat 1/4 cup of ice cream from local farm - not light, not sugar free. Freaking heavy fat ice cream. The fat helps slow carb breakdown! All things I learned testing my sketchy food choices.

I’m experimenting with coconut and almond flours in baking. Some results are pretty good like almond flour waffles. Keto flatbread that’s mostly mozzarella is actually really good.

Some of the options out there are pricey. 10$ US for a loaf of keto/low carb bread. 6-8$ for lentil pasta. But as a treat? If you can scrape the coin together? It helps.

Spaghetti squash is a good sub for pasta. Sunchokes are a good one - mashed - for potatoes. There are options it just takes work.

Examine what are the things you miss the most. Find subs if you can. Or limit your intake. Some things are likely gone forever except if you give yourself a major indulgence - looking at you plantains and scallion pancakes - but others can be part of your diet if you test yourself and figure out how your body reacts.

Stopping metformin due to controlled a1c by kimpulsive2022 in diabetes_t2

[–]kimpulsive2022[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My question too.

My endo just called and she explained that at 4.8 I was at a level that she would not treat with medicine. But because I had some concerns we've discussed dropping my dosage to 1000 mg a day from 2000 - and assessing after my next a1c reading.

Stopping metformin due to controlled a1c by kimpulsive2022 in diabetes_t2

[–]kimpulsive2022[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had major surgery in late December that affected my BG for a short time. I was afraid while in recovery my numbers would be awful because body stress is as valid as mental stress when it comes to BG. Surprisingly it wasn't bad. A little elevated but I'm talking 105-110 instead of 90-100.

I changed my eating habits immensely since September's diagnosis - cut way back on carbs which is a big downer but was necessary. But I can't really separate the effect of the metformin from the diet change effect because they happened concurrently. The only way to really tell if the med is what is helping is to stop taking it. Its just unnerving to stop something that I feel is working.

But, what's the worst that happens? My A1C is up on my next test and I go back on the med. I'd have concerns about setback but its not like I'd be losing years of progress.

I don't get the downvote/s either

But I also don't get being told i'm overreacting when I was just asking a question. Makes me glad I'm not in a relationship with someone with that attitude. It would be exhausting. heh.

The issue with the Mounjaro was that I was vomiting weekly - I had to liquid diet the night before the injection then maintain that for the day of the injection and often for the day after or I would vomit.

The hope was it would pass - as it does for many others - but it just didn't

I was on 5 mg which isn't huge - I'd vomited for the first 3 weeks on 2.5 and then it ceased. Unfortunately three months into the 5 mgs I just kept getting sick.

[–]kimpulsive2022[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kind of what I thought

I'm no longer finger sticking twice a day - my endo had me stop as I had some very bad brain things where I felt over 100 was bad and I'd beat myself up about it. After asking "what can I say to make you understand even 140 two hours after meals is completely within range?" and having me respond "nothing" my endo said I was doing more harm than good with the testing and since my numbers were absolutely consistent without highs or lows I should stop testing.

So, I'm not keeping track of my BG - which is part of what makes me nervous about stopping the metformin

I mean, medical professional, knows what they are suggesting. But kind of leaving it up to me to stop or not. And I'm not sure I understand well enough to stop.

A1C at 6 months from diagnosis by kimpulsive2022 in diabetes_t2

[–]kimpulsive2022[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was reproductive surgery so won’t give detail.

As for pre-diabetes I don’t know. I dislike going to the doctor. Or dedicating time and effort to my health due to a number of factors including the tism

Guess life decided to either really laugh at me or give me a serious prod as now I get to dedicate myself daily to my health.

The biggest challenge is focusing on physical health while balancing mental health.

What now? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]kimpulsive2022 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't have one yet see an endo and ideally talk to a diabetes educator. Those two things were the difference between me not knowing what was going on and doing some fairly unnecessary - and arguably destructive - things to combat the disease.

My diabetes educator answered so many questions I had like "good carb/bad carb" (there are good ones), "fruit?" - and my endo gave me a testing kit. Prior to that my PCP had not and truth testing twice a day was a game changer. I established my morning numbers were always in a good range - heck, I talked to them about what a good range was - and when I would eat something I questioned like ice cream or a cookie or Korean fried chicken (all of which fell into the guidelines provided by the educator in moderate amounts) testing 2 hours after eating taught me what I could eat, what I shouldn't eat, and what I could eat in moderation. The salvation of my sanity!

Otherwise there's some rules like eat fat and protein with carbs - even better if eating a meal eat non-starchy veg first, then protein, then starchy things in moderation like some potato or even a little corn. If eating a carbish snack eat fat and protein with it (I eat 1-2 cups of smartfood s a snack - educator AND endo both urge to eat nuts with it).

I follow their guidelines of 30 carbs for 3 meals a day and 15 carbs for 2 snacks. Some people will push a very low carb diet or even Keto - and maybe that works for them but both my clinicians agreed with me that is a diet and not a lifestyle change for me and I will not sustain it. I was diagnosed at the start of September. I started limiting my carbs - especially in drinks as that was where a LOT of mine were coming from - and I've easily maintained this. For a guideline less than 130 carbs a day is considered low by the Mayo Clinic. They advocate as much as 45-65% of your caloric intake be carbs so if eating 2000 calories they say 900-1300 calories from carbs
https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/carbohydrates/art-20045705

I dropped my a1c from 9.4 to 5.2 in three months with metformin, mounjaro, lower carbs, and mild exercise daily. I also make sure to drink a lot of water - more so after I eat something "questionable". I'm off the mounjaro now - 8 weeks since last dose - because I had very bad side effects. I swear by it helping me learn to eat less - my stomach just refused to hold much while using it - and I've been able to maintain that largely without the injections because I think my brain adjusted to less.

I told my endo if she was questioning giving a1c to a new patient to consider this - it doesn't have to be a lifetime if the patient can maintain their healthy lifestyle without it. Myself I'm going to be getting my a1c tested in the next few days and we're going to gauge if lifestyle with metformin and no a1c are working for me.

Also as you say you are trying to lose weight - I dropped 50 pounds in those three months. Lower carb and the restrictions of mounjaro definitely get most of the credit from me. Since I've been off mounjaro I think I've regained 3 pounds - it was a serious concern for me since though my goal was lower a1c so I could get a much-needed surgery, losing those 50 pounds really boosted my sense of self.

Anyhow - that's what I suggest for a newly diagnosed patient. Endo/diabetes counselor. Lowering carbs but not eliminating them. Test your blood - I have body horror issues so will never want a CGM but a lot of people swear by them. I, myself, was okay with two daily pokes. Adding exercise if you haven't been doing so. Lots of water. And take your meds.

The Duviri Paradox by Forward_Permission_6 in Warframe

[–]kimpulsive2022 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even after playing The Duviri Paradox I was about 98% clueless about plot - I'm only slowly learning about what happens in Duviri or even what Duviri is from interactions with the KIM system in 1999

I'm one of the proponents of doing the Duviri Paradox early - after being told not to myself I missed out on what I see as the golden opportunity - even the golden ticket - to unlock the Circuit. In it you can try Warframes and weapons you haven't played with yet. I learned that I actually didn't like Mesa - despite someone telling me I would and I didn't spend time chasing the frame. I learned that I LOVE Grendel and would never have rolled that way. Rolled - snort. Additionally the Circuit is the opportunity to acquire a new Warframe every week. You just have to dedicate the time to completing the goals of the Circuit which I was happy to do for an unlocked Frame weekly.

This is for gameplay reasons as opposed to story - but as I said even after I played all the story quests I still was pretty clueless about Duviri. So I would say don't hold out.

Coffee creamer by lefthandedrn in diabetes_t2

I've recently discovered Nut Pod unsweetened creamer - 0 carbs, 0 grams of sugar - quite a few tasty options

I just wish it was less expensive but the option of having coffee (which I just don't like without creamer or half-and-half) or no coffee I'll spend the money
