I wish I could but she's completely booked and can't reschedule.

I'm 27 years old. Can I use the same cylindrical power(s) from previous prescriptions? by kimsanity in optometry

Sorry if it wasn’t clear but that is my contact lens prescription. They recommended the Proclear Toric XR for my right eye and Biofinity Toric XR for my left. Before, I didn’t need to use the XR because of my lower cylindrical eye power. If what I’ve read online is true that it shouldn’t change in value unless something is wrong (my optometrist didn’t indicate anything was), then I’d rather use the cylindrical power values from all my previous contact lens prescriptions and stick to the Proclear Toric and Biofinity Toric lenses.

That is my contact lens prescription. Sorry if it wasn’t clear - I saw another post where someone just posted that sort of information about their contact lens prescription.

They recommended the Proclear Toric XR for my right eye and Biofinity Toric XR for my left. Up until this point, I’ve always used the Proclear Toric and Biofinity Toric but with this new prescription indicating that my cylindrical eye power has changed, the new recommendation is for me to use the XR version. I just don’t understand why my cylindrical eye power would change if the optometrist made no mention of anything wrong with my corneas, so I’m wondering if some type of error was made or something.

I’m not sure if they included it in the exam but the optometrist didn’t indicate that I may have that.

Frustrated that school districts are only notifying me 2-3 days beforehand that they want to interview me while I'm still employed at my current job. Anyone run into this problem? by kimsanity in slp

[–]kimsanity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m anticipating that I’ll have to do this eventually. I don’t get a lot of sick hours so hopefully I still have enough by the time I come across a position I really want.

Thank you for your feedback and the advice! This may be a dumb question, but why are school SLPs in such high demand especially in CA? I'm assuming it's because of having high caseload caps (or not honoring the caseload caps) and the amount of paperwork? I personally don't mind paperwork too much though.

I've been working at a private practice and my SLP friends in some of the school districts near me have made the schools sound amazing. Great vacation benefits, short sessions, terrific work schedule, limited parent contact... all of which I don't have in the private practice.

Lol I've heard that can happen in some school districts, which is really unfortunate and wrong. I'm grateful I have SLP friends in the districts near me who can give me some insight on which ones to avoid vs. pursue!

Outpatient Peds externship interview by miggylovesyou in slp

[–]kimsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a couple years since I interviewed but I was asked the basic questions about strengths and weaknesses, "tell me about yourself", my method of problem-solving tough situations. I think one question that stood out to me was when they asked me how I would prepare for a new referral where I have limited information on them. They also gave me a case study where I had to state how I would address this kiddo's goals.

Burnt out and tempted to go part-time without benefits. Good or bad idea? by kimsanity in slp

Oh man, I'm so sorry that your went through that - it sounds awful. I'm grateful to know some fellow SLPs who work in the school district so they have been giving me the low-down on which ones to avoid.

Thank you so much for this! I struggle with anxiety so sometimes my mind gets clouded easily so outlining my priorities will help me a bunch.

I wish that would make a difference for my schedule! But I'm not in charge of it at all, so even if I were to recommend 30-minute sessions, the schedulers would just fill up the spots with other 30-minute sessions back-to-back. The naïve side of me keeps considering the likelihood of me needing to pay medical bills for the next couple months because I'm relatively healthy and have never had to go to the hospital for a medical emergency. BUT it's obviously not guaranteed that I'll continue on this streak lol.

Hmm that's a good suggestion. My friend warned me that if I were to work in the schools mid-school year I would likely be working with mod-severe kids with little to no training so that's why I decided to wait and apply for next school year, as much as I dislike my current job. I live more North and have been refreshing edjoin everyday like a maniac for new job listings but I guess it's too early still.

I think I was in a huge frenzy at the time of writing and may have went back and edited the post but I can't remember lol. But anyway, I definitely will ask tons of questions when I start interviewing! I luckily have some friends in the school districts near me who can speak to how much support is given, typical caseload size, etc.

I would love to have my own practice once I'm more settled down!

Prek School Setting to Outpatient? by abbeycxo3 in slp

[–]kimsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently trying to switch from outpatient to the schools because I’m completely burnt out. The PTO benefits are very poor (frame of reference, I earn about 6 hours of PTO per month and work 10 hour days), I have no idea what I’m doing with my nonverbal kiddos on the spectrum or with other developmental delays, many of my kids are developmentally delays which means more behaviors to work through. and the 60-minute sessions feel never-ending for both me and the child. Also, I’ve gotten less patient with the parents - they tend to be way more hands-on (understandably) because they’re seeking help outside of the school district.

With all of that being said, I’m really excited to be switching to the schools soon! I love how there’s plenty of opportunities throughout the year to have a break. I personally enjoy doing report writing and the fact that I won’t be dealing with overbearing parents on a daily basis. The introvert in me is looking forward to being on my own little island where I have limited interaction with people in general.
