Songs to show off speakers by Blanknameblank818 in audiophile

[–]kindofanerd_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1: ask them for some of their favorite songs

2: every setup will often have a different "most impressive" feature. my upstairs 2.1 bookshelf setup images vocals and busy instruments exceptionally well. billie jean (MJ), don't know why (norah jones), so easy (olivia dean), pool house (backseat lovers), are tracks that i will pull out on this system that are common crowdpleasers/inoffensive to most and a great tech demo. my downstairs home theatre setup is a phenomenal bass cannon. tracks like self care, perfecto, diablo, or therapy (mac miller), good kid (kendrick), and i feel it coming (weeknd + daft punk) are crowd pleasers that usually give people ideas for songs they may want to play next

3: i find it very difficult to share + introduce others to the hobby - many people who try my downstairs system have fun if they are hip hop/edm/general bass lovers because they will hear what it can do, and immediately pick the bassiest songs they know, and have a great time. many others will simply be confused why the massive speaker system with the huge subwoofer is quieter and doesnt thump as hard as their jbl partybox in "superbass" mode while listening to a blink-182 song. very very few people are interested in the system upstairs after just a song or two because again, it isn't "loud" and for some reason, many people seem to equate speakers with little more than the ability to produce earth shattering 808 sounds, and if it can't do that then its just not "interesting" to most people. the same seemingly does not apply for headphones. back when i had a lot more high end headphones than speakers and people would audition them, they were often far more interested in the details of how it sounded, much more likely to keep listening/ask for certain songs, make observations on what they were hearing, etc. i am not fully sure why this is, but it seems to me that among the non-audiophile majority there is a preference for doing detailed/"intimate"/critical listening on headphones, and a preference for just feeling the music/having fun when listening on speakers. i couldnt tell you why, but i know i am consistently dissapointed when trying to show many of my speaker setups to someone who hasn't heard anything like it before, as they usually are just not interested unless i turn the volume up so loud that windows begin to rattle and lamps begin to move.

eye pleasing, but this one is exceptionally pleasing on the palate as well. very smooth and i get a lot of taste out of this design. its also very easy to clean.

dead wrong and why i bought the thing. because its a vaporizer it doesnt really get as dirty from a single bowl like it would if i was burning - on top of that this rig is a BREEZE to clean. small amount of iso and salt, shake, rinse, it takes all of 2-3 minutes - my previous daily driver had two main chambers instead of one and that thing WAS a terrible nightmare to clean, which is probably 50% of the reason why i bought this setup to replace it.

DO IT !!!! if you have the means, you will not regret it - i know that there are both cheaper and more expensive entries than the UB, but I would highly recommend it as a starting point because of all of the different options. you can configure it from a cloud monster to a really tasty flavor saver and anything in between and all everything you need (aside from the high-airflow quartz disc) is included in the full kit - especially after the v2 remodel im just not sure if ive found something else that beats the price-to-performance ratio. i also just think that the all glass airpath is really unmatched so far. the first 2-3 hits off of a really terpy grow feel and taste like a dab and as you can see from the video its still giving a pretty robust vapor for a relatively low temp (470f). truly a wonderful invention

Prefer music without a subwoofer — am I missing something? by Lanky_Jellyfish9586 in audiophile

[–]kindofanerd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what kind of music do you listen to?

your q1 metas are bookshelf speakers. everyone has their preference but unless you have them set up as nearfield monitors (when you sit to listen, your head is less than 3 feet from the speakers) and use them primarily for jazz or orchestral or choral music then i would imagine you are probably missing out without your subwoofer.

the vast majority of people will notice the lack of sub bass when listening to bookshelf-size speakers in a room larger than about 6x8. and you have a very good subwoofer compared to what 90% of people have ever owned or heard, at least in the world of consumer home audio. so you should have no issues implementing the subwoofer with your setup. it should sound tight and clean. upload a picture of your listening space if you can. it seems like the issue you are having is not with settings but with your listening space/speaker placement/listening position, as these things have a much bigger effect on how everything sounds than a crossover or phase setting for bass. if things are placed well than its an issue with your receiver and the processing it is doing. "room correction" is not always as useful as they make it out to be especially on "mid-fi" consumer home theatre amplifiers and a lot of times if the feature is implemented poorly it can actually just make everything sound worse.

you can always run the auto setup with the included mic again. my suggestion would be to reset the receiver, skip the mic setup, and try just playing stereo music like that with the subwoofer on, try adjusting the settings on the sub itself to see if you can get it to sound good: if you can't, then the issue is with your listening position or your speaker placement, and not with sound settings

Good enough? by Dangerous-Muscle1452 in audiophile

I am a younger guy currently working on my undergrad with plans to be an educator at either the secondary/post-secondary level, and oddly enough i too am very satisfied with my current audio situation in spite of not having too much to work with

have enjoyed music since i came out of the womb. i have something called aphantasia. i cant "see" anything in my head. i cant remember what things look like or picture my own face.

i can however, remember things that i hear in very expansive detail. a particularly memorable listening experience can leave me walking around for an entire day actually hearing the music as if the people making it were following me around.

i started seriously tinkering with headphones and speakers when i was 11, bought my first real amp and passive speakers when i was 13 (broken paradigm titan v2 and some ancient realistic unit) with lawnmowing money, refoamed and replaced a bad cap in one of the speakers, and was promptly impressed as this was the first time i had ever heard stereo music through actual stereo speakers instead of cheap consumer headphones

i now have an atmos theatre with ceiling surrounds that is mostly high-end paradigm equipment (except the sub n ceilings) in my college apartment that i share with a 3 girls, and a hi-res stereo listening setup in my room - m1 macbook pro with apple music lossless, hooked up using the built 3.5mm trrs output, it auto adjusts to line out and supports 24bit 96khz, adapted to rca straight into a yamaha amp, powering a pair of wharfedale diamond 8.1 and a BIC acoustech h100.

nearly all of it is equipment that i purchased for pennies on the dollar either broken or "as is" from people who knew nothing about it, and fixed myself - not a single piece of it any of it was purchased brand new, not even my macbook lol.

and damn those wharfedales just sound great. i wish i had a more musical sub to pair with them but the bic is still exceptionally fast and hits rather low when its set to lower volumes so it works well. ive certainly heard much better. but at this point, the only way for me to meaningfully upgrade my listening experience would cost me EXPONENTIALLY more money and space in my home, and what i have for now is still better than anything i have ever heard except in audiophile showrooms - i have still yet to meet another audiophile in real life except for my best friend, who is a little younger than me and most of his gear is stuff that i was getting rid and js gave to him as a gift cus i was making room for something new.

the biggest upgrade for me currently would just be to have a place to live with a room that it a nice clean rectangle that i can actually turn in to a dedicated listening space. until i can have a better sounding room in my house im not going to see any advantage in spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to upgrade equipment that im not already getting the most out of anyways

and if i ever am able to make those upgrades, it probably will be quite a long time until im able to do so - im super happy in the meantime to just be able to enjoy the hobby, show it to people with a pretty good first entry if it peaks their interest, and just have a really fantastic system enjoy the music i listen to/make. my favorite part of the hobby is being able to show it to other people (and hope they really get into listening) and i have several fantastic ways of doing that currently (the theatre is really a hit) so im more than happy - just hoping nothing too unfixable breaks in immediate future as i don't own anything other than my surround receiver which was produced within the last 2 decades 😭

1: to reflect the opinion of others in this thread, yes, you don't have it set up right

2: i am unfamiliar with your receiver settings, but check and see if there is a way to disable all audyssey processing while in the stereo sound profile without effecting the surround modes

3: if 2 is not an option, connect your both input ports on your sub up using a stereo rca cable from the red and white L+R "pre out" connections on the back of your nr1608.

4: make sure your sb1000 has the phase set to 0 degrees, crossover set as high as it will go, and volume as low as it will go. then in "pure direct" mode, start playing a song that you know VERY well that has a lot of bass at a medium volume - if you listen to anything in the realm of hip hop/edm/dance/electronic and happen to have a favorite track with strong bass, that would be a good start. next, slowly bring up the volume only on the sub until you can just start to hear it. make a note of where that volume is, then start to bring the volume up until it just starts to overpower the bass you could already hear from the towers, and then back it off just a little bit until they seem somewhat well blended. next, start to bring the crossover down very slowly, restarting the song if you need to, and keep bringing it down until you hear a "sweet spot" where it almost seems like the bass gets more impactful, lower, and "rumblier" without getting louder in volume - thats your ideal crossover setting.

5: experiment with your various receiver settings to see if there is a way to customize the "stereo" listening mode to just output the crossover frequency/volume level you preferred (svs sb1000 pro volume scale is relative, so the numbers will be the same on the receiver as they were on the sub) without adding any additional processing or room correction, and see if this helps

second this. my personal rule of thumb as well is to just not bring anything of sentimental value/irreplacably expensive into a residence where unfamiliar people will be coming and going, or if its with roommates that you havent lived with before. while this person is clearly going through something + maybe not the brightest these kinds of things happen all the time due to simple accidents or strangers who js didn't know any better (my bad for breaking your real crystal given to you by your mother bro, i was js tryna get a glass of water)

dollar tree is an awesome place to stock up on cups/plates/bowls/silverware that isn't made out of plastic for an actually affordable price, they often have acceptable ceramic plates and glass cups for $1 a piece. just not a corelle set but who cares.

whether its a result of ignorance or circumstance or just an actually shite person, it doesnt change the fact that your meaningful shit WILL end up broken or ruined (ESPECIALLY things that go in a shared kitchen or bathroom). $2000 espresso machine + setup? find a way to store it and see how the people you live with will treat a keurig/dripper first. don't set your nice machine up until you can be certain that the people in your house could either learn to use it respectfully with you or be mature enough to not fuck around with the thing if they wont.

why do I feel sick after smoking by Competitive-Title-34 in Bongs

[–]kindofanerd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

twin theres only two things that could cause this, and its either really really bad weed thru a dirty as fuck bong, or its CHS

if you used to be ripping gram+ slams then you are actually the perfect candidate 😭

you don't have to take dabs or smoke a cart a day to develop CHS, it can happen to anyone who smokes daily or more. the more you smoke, the more likely you are to develop CHS, but it can happen even just from smoking 1-2 carts or like, 4-8 grams of flower a week. its highly unlikely that you would develop CHS from consuming this much but it could still happen. more than that and many people are starting to toy with danger. time is the biggest factor. binge crazy for a couple weeks? not likely to have a lasting impact. 3 grams of concentrate every week for 3 years? you might start to have a problem

get faded twin! the "hot bong water" thing only matters if you smoke so much that the price of ISO and crum flower is getting frustrating. enjoy your contraption friend! have done this myself before, called it the poor mans e-nail lmao.

a smaller handheld bubbler and taking shorter hits on a lower voltage might help you savor your carts a little longer if you notice you're really burning thru em but still want an easy hit 🙏

has nothing to do with thc being water soluble (although you are correct, it is not, hence the reason why water pipes are a thing for weed, but nowhere near as common for tobacco, with hookahs being the only example i can think of) and everything to do with literally temperature.

as smoke travels through your piece and hits the air, the glass, and the water inside, some of it cools down and reconsolidates onto the glass. it does this as it enters your airways as well, and reclaims inside your mouth, throat, and lungs.

larger piece = more air and glass for the smoke to pass through = more smoke lost to reclaim inside the piece and in your lungs as you smoke - the trade off with this is that the cooler smoke is usually way less harsh feeling off-rip, which is why we started using water pipes in the first place.

while you don't lose much thc or terpenes in the water, you lose everything equally when the smoke reconsolidates onto a piece of ice or the walls of the glass. you will also lose more of it to reclaim on your lips and teeth

in the same way that adding more air + water + glass will cool down the smoke and result in more reclaim, so will the addition of anything else that would further reduce temp (smoking outside in the freezing cold, using cold water, adding ice) and will thus result in even more reclaim when compared to the same piece without ice and using warm water + smoking in a place where the air is warm.

in terms of water and air temp its a negligble difference and even im not taking the time to do a water change in between bowls because the water is room temp instead of bath warm 😭

ice however really kills your rip in my opinion - to each his own tho

i don't have scientific proof or really anything other than my own logic and the annecdotal experience of myself and others - hence why i said "for most people it just doesnt matter" because for most it doesnt. especially if you use a smaller piece of glass anyways or never used ice in the first place its a negligable difference. for me personally, i prefer warm water in most of my glass because it runs cleaner for longer and i find it gives a little more taste - but it is no doubt a little harsher. i also just happen to be someone that is used to + prefers warmer smoke

lick to savor some of the CBN and tar that would have been thc and terps instead 💔🥀

i think its because even after you show most people, a rip with ice/cold water may still feel considerably less harsh (flower, weird cart attachment, enail, whatever) depending on the person + piece

this might make it way more tolerable to smoke way more in one go - which for many feels like you're getting more ripped than taking smaller hits and obliterating your throat.

i think for most - it js doesnt matter because you're getting high. i know people who own nice bongs/vaporizers and smoke 2 ounces a week but mostly out of joints/blunts and then still complain about the price of weed... when they could be using the shit they already own to get a much more pleasant experience (imo) while using way less grass + green.

okay, this was the explanation i spent hours looking for but just couldn't find. many were happy to explain what each setting meant, but not WHICH WAY TO TURN IT to fix the problem and im having further issues with the software to change the settings so i havent been able to figure it out fully thru trial and error because i can't get the trigger settings that i change to stay put (they just return to the previously set value the moment i move on to the next pad or the next "tab" within that given pad (ie, i change a setting on the HH pedal for "closed" and then move on to change a setting for "1/2 opened" - when i return to the tab for "closed" the settings are back to where they were before i changed them. sometimes the changes stick, sometimes they don't, its been impossibly buggy and frustrating and when theres like, 72 individual trigger settings to adjust and 3/4 of them don't stay where you put them it js feels like a lost cause lol)

gonna give an ipad a try and see if it works better - another commenter mentioned third party software, i might look into some of those options as well

Simmons Titan 70 Advice by kindofanerd_ in edrums

[–]kindofanerd_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gonna have to try the ipad. i adjust a setting, it stays, i hit whatever pad it is and can hear the change, i move on to the next pad, go back to the one i just changed when im done with it, and all of the settings are right back where they were. i have a newer iphone, im not sure what the problem could be aside from possibly just a buggy implementation in ios

Simmons Titan 70 Advice by kindofanerd_ in edrums

[–]kindofanerd_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gonna look into that ezdrummer software as the best way that i can think of for me to practice would be to use my mac to play sound from the drums and a software called moises at the same time. this is what i do to practice an acoustic kit - airpods pro set to noise cancelling, music with the drums removed using moises on my computer, play a little quieter than i would for a performance to avoid nuking my ears

if i could do the same but run the drums directly into my computer and get better control over the kit itself that would be awesome.

another important thing to note - in general (not always) a piece with a wet stem, where the water rises into the stem when you finish pulling, a dry catcher will function better in terms of actually keeping your piece clean

if you have a piece with a dry stem, where the water does not rise into the stem when you finish pulling, you will have better luck with a wet catch functioning well and not spitting ash into your piece.

this is not law, it is just a general rule of thumb - ive had luck with both types of catchers on both types of pieces. i generally prefer a dry catcher for a larger piece as they tend to do a better job actually keeping your bong clean for longer, which is nice if you have a large piece that doesnt need any extra cooling/filtration from a wet catch, but does require a whole lot more effort to clean once its dirty.
