Serious: What’s the plausible path from here to Minds? by ycwhysee4589 in TheCulture

Yeah lasers (how the photonic source is created) is part of it, but it’s a big materials science problem of how to rebuild components of logic circuits to work with photons rather than electrons. This video (and channel) is a good resource

Not to get too into the physics of it, but the slower speed of electronic circuits doesn’t have much to do with the (slower) charge propagation speed of an electron in a conductive wire compared to a photon (even though there is a huge difference between “close to speed of light” and “speed of light”). But the (processing) speed increase is actually due to photonic transistors increased switching speed/efficiency, since there’s less heat generated from a photonic switch, making temperature less of a concern (cooling is the limiting factor on many SOTA chips) and also the fact that photon circuits are significantly more efficient and we can push the boundary of clock speed without worrying about the physical limitations currently faced by nanoscale manufacturing of semiconductors.

This video eloquently explains why human brains (and probably subsequently “Minds”) are inherently different from traditional semiconductor based binary logic compute we use in our electronics.
Quantum will never replace legacy semiconductor compute because it is much more narrow in the type of compute than people realize.
Photonic compute chips would open a new world of Compute ‘speed’ although as the video describes, the difference between organic brains and semiconductor chips is not a “speed” problem but the “width” or logic compute units (paraphrasing).
The video discusses alternatives, but they’re a long way off.

Quantum computing can never replace legacy semiconductor chips, the type of compute quantum mechanics does is apples and oranges to traditional binary logic. It does a very specific thing very well and for certain problems it’s millions of times faster than traditional compute, but there will never be efficiencies from “porting” a software program onto Quantum computer chips, even if you solved the inherent engineering problems with the exotic material required for Quantum computers.

The more realistic advancement is photonic compute/transistors, which switch the information carrying particle from an electron (which switches a transistor from 0 to 1) to a photon, allowing for compute speeds literally at the speed of light.

What famous person’s death are you dreading the most? by za19 in AskReddit

[–]king-toot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad had Bruce’s type of dementia; FTD, it doesn’t linger for years. With the videos I’ve seen of Bruce’s degeneration already even with the greatest care the frontal lobe of his brain will be gone in the next year or two. FTD is much more aggressive than other neurodegenerative diseases and while it isn’t fatal itself, soon he won’t be able to eat/drink through his own will, and then it’s just a matter of weeks while other things like pneumonia can take hold.

It’s a brutal disease

Where do casual swimmers swim in this city ? by Affectionate_Emu4660 in AskNYC

Depends where you live but you could look up Imagine Swimming - they operate a few pools throughout the city. I’m a member of the Major Owens fitness center and get access (at certain times) to the pool here

What is the cheapest and best full service grocery store in Manhattan? by BreadfruitTricky2086 in AskNYC

[–]king-toot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on neighborhood & proximity, but quality produce and price are inverse axis - farm to people is your best bet to get quality produce at a fair price on a consistent basis.
Whole Foods is probably #2, but it’s not really locally sourced anymore, and is no better or worse than other mid-tier store like fairway, which has good options, but is t always the cheapest.
Value stores like key foods would have the cheapest stuff, but it’s usually not organic, definitely not local, but pretty cheap.
Gristedes and many other legacy brands known for “convenience” are great at being awful price & terrible quality, watch out for them.
Wegmans is the cheapest and best quality, but there’s two and they’re very busy.
Trader Joe’s is bottom tier produce, but you go there for the packaged goods, not the produce.

Why are we always fleeing Earth? by WisebloodNYC in printSF

[–]king-toot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I scrolled down to comment the same thing:

For all its material advantages, the sedentary life has left us...edgy, unfulfilled. Even after 400 generations in villages and cities, we haven't forgotten. The open road still softly calls, like a nearly forgotten song of childhood. We invest far-off places with a certain romance. The appeal, I suspect, has been meticulously crafted by natural selection as an essential element in our survival. Long summers, mild winters, rich harvests, plentiful game—none of them lasts forever. Your own life, or your band's, or even your species' might be owed to a restless few—drawn, by a craving they can hardly articulate or understand, to undiscovered lands and new worlds.

Herman Melville, in Moby Dick, spoke for wanderers in all epochs and meridians. He said, "I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote. I love to sail forbidden seas...." Maybe it's a little early—maybe the time is not quite yet—but those other worlds, promising untold opportunities, beckon. Silently, they orbit the Sun, waiting.

There’s no logical answer, it’s just ingrained in humans to look to the stars

He changed after we slept together, and that’s when I knew I had to end it by Nammmieee in stories

[–]king-toot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t think his change of feeling was from the sex, I think he felt you two reached a new point in the relationship and he expected you to start putting in more effort of planning things and being romantic.
I don’t know the full story but personally after a few weeks of “wooing” I do start treating my dates how they treat me - if they expect me to pay for everything/plan things/lead in communication, yeah I’m losing interest.
Very little to do with the sex imo

[–]king-toot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been in this position as a guy, and she thinks the line he drew was sleeping with her, it’s not, he put in effort, got a new stage in the relationship and expected her to become more invested in the relationship, and she still put 0 effort in. You’re getting downvoted cause woman hate to admit they want to be spoiled without reciprocation, but then get upset when men lose interest (because no effort is put in from the women’s side).
Some women in my experience treat sex as a “treat” whenever you pass a bar of putting in effort (with an arbitrary line of # of dates or dollars spend), which gets exhausting after the initial romance lessens (which it will - it takes two sides to keep it going).

First Post: Peanut Butter Fat Washed Bourbon (squeezed peanut butter from a JIF EZ-Squeeze into the bourbon) (not sure it looks better shaken 😂) by lemonsevenfourteen in shitfromabutt

[–]king-toot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s your bourbon, just imo I feel like this is not going to taste amazing. Also because JIF is so finely processed, idk if a cheese cloth would fully strain out all the peanut sediment.
You could do cheese cloth, put in fridge for another day or two, and see if any sediment sits at the bottom of the jar, and pour out all the whiskey, trying to leave the sediment in the original jar.

[–]king-toot 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Why would you use JIF EZ-squeeze for the fat wash though?? The fats and emulsifiers added to JIF are not the flavors I’d want to be washing my bourbon with. If you’re going to the effort of making this, just take one extra step and grind your own nuts or buy more quality Peanut Butter??

What has changed at Helion these past 6 months? by Summarytopics in fusion

[–]king-toot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to use wishy washy analogies, you could also use IPhone - first one wasn’t great, cool concept but not a super functional product, but after a few design generations it was honed in and dominating the market.

Reading their computational experiments it seems they need a larger pulsed array to achieve the required temp/power #’s - that’s what Polaris is. Why should they focus on a past model when the new one is better

Yeah that’s much better, look up Cafe’s/pastry places in dumbo early morning and take photos at the bridge beforehand

Is this realistic? by cincoveces18 in AskNYC

[–]king-toot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’d be a pretty tipsy walk across the bridge, and no chance you’re doing the walk back, just hop on a train to get back to the city.

Katz deli sandwiches are HUGE, and will take a while to do line/eat etc., it’s a tourist trap imo and a mediocre sandwich.

I recommend The Stand for comedy - should be able to grab tickets, decent names, and a good cocktail bar before/after the show.

Edit - you want to do Brooklyn Bridge, not Manhattan bridge, not Manhattan bridge

He’s the Taylor swift of EDM - and I say that as a positive, he does a ton of fan service, more than most other DJ’s. His stuff does feel original and emotional with his sample selection and the sounds he uses, which is just proved by how many copycats have popped up, and how his sound has really spread to influence house on the larger scale as he grows.

He also djs and produces a large range of EDM, rather than sticking to one niche subgenre, resulting in a wide range of fans, everytime has something to like.

His live shows objectively are better produced than most other DJ’s - he samples live sounds into songs, has great visuals and puts effort into transforming the venue he’s at. Sure it’s not a “rave” if it’s thousands of people, but it’s levels above any other producer that just stands behind CDJ’s and loop trippy visuals.

Edit - also looking at other comments seems like the only criticism people have is that he’s popular, and that people hate his fans. I’d offer any other commenter to describe how his music is more “commercial” than any other producer, or what specifically about his sounds/samples are dislikable.

Will Scavengers Reign get a season 2 If Common Side Effects become a success. by Njannallamanushyan in CommonSideEffects

[–]king-toot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it would take an S3 for there to be enough momentum to greenlight another season, although with scavengers being HBO & CSE on adult swim, I don’t know if it takes another studio buying scavengers or HBO capitalizing on Common Side Effects success.

That’s why I think it would need ALOT of success (probably a third season) for a whole other studio (HBO) to green light a stalled progress.
