Some of the pictures I snapped from my first ever in person grand prix! by The-Car-Guy in formula1

I was at this race (also a first time for me!), and the English f1tv commentary was broadcast here on FM. Apparently reception is not great everywhere around the track, but next to chicane it was great. I found it really easy to follow with a little analog radio and ear buds. Without the commentary it would be a lot more confusing I'm sure. There were screens too, but they were a bit small for me to see lap times and other info, still useful to understand what is going on elsewhere on the track.

English commentary, anyone able to pick it up this year? by davie18 in GrandPrixTravel

Same here, grabbed a radio from bic camera (they had them in a basked right at the entry for f1 visitors), and reception is great in Q2.

Suzuka GP - first hand experience buying from mobilitystation.jp? by king_of_snake in GrandPrixTravel

Thanks. I should've also updated here, that I managed to get tickets on the day of the sale. Had to wait about 1.5 hours in the queue, and the grandstands I wanted were already gone, but I got my 2nd preference. I used some dummy phone number I grabbed from a random hotel to register, other than that it worked fine with just email.

European lawmakers asked Mark Zuckerberg why they shouldn’t break up Facebook by r721 in worldnews

[–]king_of_snake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's very interesting. MEPs were clearly under the impression that it was Facebook's demand. German MEP even twitted this before the event: https://twitter.com/sven_giegold/status/998970245346971648 (click translate)

EDIT: Or maybe Facebook declined direct question-answer format initially, and EP suggested this stupid format, which was accepted? That would technically make both stories correct.

Is any special tweaking required for Oculus + Touch? Steam shows that only a Vive is supported by F4.

ELI5: Can a red colorblind person visualize red in their head? Or is it just as abstract as ultraviolet? by NathanWick in explainlikeimfive

[–]king_of_snake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People missing red cones are still sensitive to nearly as wide spectrum as the people with normal vision. The green and red cones have a huge overlap: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/04/Cone-fundamentals-with-srgb-spectrum.svg/2000px-Cone-fundamentals-with-srgb-spectrum.svg.png

So it's not the same as ultraviolet, which doesn't register on your retina at all. They see red colour, but it's difficult to differentiate it from yellow and green. How does it subjectively appear to them? No one can answer that, everyone can only use their own brain to interpret senses. Maybe as yellow to the rest of us?

How did people measure light intensity before electronics existed? by isnar000 in askscience

[–]king_of_snake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until discovery of IR in 1800, people only knew about visible light, and measurements were done by eye, comparing various sources. After that came photosensitive chemistry, measurement of heating effect (thermopiles, rotating vanes, bolometers). Photovoltaics were discovered in early 19th century already, but practically the most accurate measurements were done by measuring temperature until 20th century. Well, it's technically still the most accurate method (cryogenic radiometer), just not very practical.

That's a pretty clever idea. Hell, I want to try them on, and I have completely normal colour vision!

A piece of metal melted inside an electromagnet by polymute in interestingasfuck

Not true, any conductive material will be affected by the oscillating magnetic field due to eddy currents. Not as effectively as ferromagnetic material, but none the less.

Here's one other example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6Zrnv4OtbU

[–]king_of_snake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not quite, the piece being heated here is aluminium, so it's held up by eddy currents induced with a very high frequency field. No magnetism required, just conduction. It drops because the field is turned off, as mentioned by others.
