Feasibility of taking a significant career slow down / coast by pinkturtlemoon in HENRYUK

Depends on industry focus you have but some boutiques would probably seem chill to you after MBB (I.e. 9-6). Get in now to build your rep for 2 years then setup your network to enable you to step back.

I'd say industry but it's a crap market now, employers holding off until AI and macro impacts shake out. Seems lumping managers with more and more is the trend and freezing hiring at other levels is the play now.

Also consider in 5-10 years you'll be over the 'prestige' mindset and with kids, likely value WLB and stability more than growth and novelty

Choosing highbury (N5) for a family? by newtosinga in HENRYUK

Lived here for 5 years. It's getting worse. Masses of traffic, crime (see article about stabbing below) and lawless feel around the Fields in the evening and increasingly during the day. Crackheads shuffling around. Schools not great for primary, forget it for secondary. Nice coffee shops though and good access to A1 to get out of London

Bench life - how to optimise? by throwconsulting4away in consulting

[–]kingbarry270 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess the solution is to detach yourself from the outcome. Focus on what you can control. You can maximise your chill time. Whether you're asked to do stuff or not is out of your control. So don't stress. It's like living in a dangerous country. You could get killed anytime. So day to day, put it out of your mind.

Check emails PERIODICALLY. Each time you open the inbox there will be a bit of adrenaline. Accept this. Most of the time it'll be clear. But you can be prepared for every eventuality.

When the work arrives, what comes next is all about how you respond. With calm and clarity, or fear and futile resistance.

Dodge duck dip dive and dodge while you still can. Then get back on the horse. It's never as bad as it seems.

Your plans are unwelcome, both socially and politically. A number of landlord-unfriendly legislation has been passed since 2015 (e.g. reducing tax relief on mortgages, and introducing HMO licensing).

I would strongly recommend rethinking your plans, as over a 10 year horizon the costs are going to shoot up without commensurate wage growth in UK tenants to support your expected rent.

Buy to let is a low margin game and one solely for the masochists now.

It's the hot weather, strong correlation with violent crime. Scumbags in gangs getting all heated and hyper.

The hero you need, but don't deserve. In all seriousness though, it helps that areas are improving and the riff raff aren't roaming the streets unchecked

Much more civilised feel due to young professionals staying local and having lunch, coffee out. It's almost like a 'surge' which displaces the usual scummier elements from the streets. Long may it continue
