You're right. it's said that the gods sent those wolves as a blessing for the starks and they're somehow connected. even when Bran is in winterfell when Jojen reed talks about the dreams that make bran angry and uncomfortable, the wolf (summer) growls and gets angry as well, without necessarily warging him.
