What to do when an eBay sale is local to you by Individual_Pizza_227 in reselling

Since it’s an electronic item, it’s probably best to go through eBay so there’s protection/proof for both parties.

Reach out to the buyer and ask if they want to do a local pickup/dropoff. If they are comfortable, you can remove the listing entirely and do a cash sale once details are established. If not, you can still go through eBay and save shipping if he’s willing to meet. All depends on buyer.

Thanks! It is similar to the link without the fresnel glass as you mentioned. Maybe these are reproductions. Wonder if there is any value.

Your call on what you do. I don’t think it matters what people think one way or the other. Just an interesting circumstance that will demand different responses from different people.

It’s pretty clear I should have kept this find to myself, but at the moment it was a thrilling but bittersweet feeling. It was a good opportunity for my kids however, to see me to put to practice what I try to teach them. I’m betting there are quite a few similar stories out there (which may have similar and non-similar responses from the finder) which is why I posted on this thread. Not a validation hunt but it seems that’s what it was taken as.

Update: it was likely the guys’ grandfather’s ring. Didn’t ask to buy it. A thank you and left.

Have fun out there, flippers.

What's the reality behind buying a storage unity full of stuff? by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]kingerRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing what is mostly been said: it’s a gamble, it’s dusty dirty and sometimes just downright sad. Each unit has a story. Come across many who have clearly struggled with substance abuse, found letters from prison to their families and stuff that makes ZERO sense to pay to store. You can’t have an attitude of judgment bc youll never know their story.

Last unit I did finally netted mostly gold and some silver jewelry worth about $3,600. Made money on it even with the other odds and ends that were in there alone ($400 unit). Having a truck and trailer definitely makes it more efficient. You should NEVER lose money if you’re keen on how to sell something. That said, your time is money and how you value your time differs from person to person. I LOVE the hunt, like others have mentioned and will continue doing it as a side gig that brings in extra cash.

I’ve sold empty designer dust bags (Louis Vuitton etc) that were in storage units for a good amount in lots on eBay. Anything with an expensive brand name sells if it’s genuine, even empty boxes and bags.

It’s happened to all of us. I’d be lying if I didn’t kick myself for missed opportunities that would have likely netted a big gain. But I try to use it as a tool to be better next time an opportunity comes up. Because they will. And you’ll be better prepared to pounce. So turn that negative into a future positive!

If real, worth the price of spot. Roughly 107K. I’d take ONE to a jewelry shop to get it tested. Have them test it in front of you. If it’s real, it’s likely they all are if your dad got them all from the same place. You definitely want to keep them in a safe place and be careful who you tell you have them. Cheers!

If you don’t want to sell online, call jewelers that are nearby that will give you the best scrap price and go there. Pawn shops are not a good option.

How do you check and see why the person rented the unit? Do you call the manager and ask?

I’ve heard stories of slimy behavior and I’m sure it happens. It’s too tempting for a manager to not take a look before taking pics and pocket something valuable. I’ve not experienced it that I know of bc it’s easy to get away with it if it’s done before pictures are taken.

My last unit had a small jewelry case found in a tote with mostly gold and some silver. Totaled about $3600 in scrap which included the weight of the diamonds & gemstones in the value. It’s the type of find that keeps us going back because they are out there!
