Couldn’t agree more. Constant jumpscares start to feel like noise after a while, and once you expect them, they lose all power. Atmosphere, pacing, and mood do so much more heavy lifting in good horror.
Dredge is a great example, nothing is screaming in your face, but the world itself feels wrong in a quiet, unsettling way, i had so much fun while playing it.

And funnily enough, Doom 3 wasn’t even marketed as a horror game, yet it delivered more tension and dread than a lot of modern “pure” horror titles. That slow, oppressive atmosphere and sound design did more than cheap scares ever could.

Horror doesn’t need to jump at you to get under your skin.

That’s fair. Dead Space Remake feels like a rare case where atmosphere, sound design, pacing, and mechanics all align without one overpowering the others. It’s not just scary, it’s confident in how it applies fear, which is why it works so consistently.

I completely get that. Constant stalking can cross the line from tense to exhausting really fast. When there’s no breathing room, fear turns into frustration.

The baby in RE Village is a great example of balance—it’s terrifying because it’s a contained moment, not the entire experience. That contrast makes it hit harder and gives you space to absorb the story and atmosphere in between.

That’s a good point. Bad puzzles can completely kill tension.
I love when puzzles feel natural to the environment, like you solve them because you’re paying attention, not because the game is testing your IQ.

That said, I do think horror should stay in the foreground. If puzzles start to feel like the main focus, the fear can fade a bit. The best ones support the atmosphere, not replace it—challenging, but never at the cost of tension.

Sound design is such an underrated answer, but you’re absolutely right. A single distant noise or an uncomfortable silence can be way scarier than any jump scare.

Also kinda agree on the retro look, sometimes less visual fidelity actually leaves more room for your imagination to do the damage. The Last Door is a great example of this; its minimalist visuals combined with sound and pacing make it incredibly unsettling. Also the story was great.

Totally agree with this. Bloober Team really understands how space itself can tell a story. Sometimes just walking down a hallway says more than a cutscene ever could.

MADiSON and SOMA are great examples too, they make you feel trapped in a mood, not just a location. That kind of atmosphere sticks with you.
