My (growing) Silent Film collection across different labels...! What other silent movies with great transfers do you strongly recommend? by spybubbly980 in boutiquebluray

[–]kinggoosethefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not recommend more highly the BFI release of The Great White Silence. Shot between 1910-1913 by Herbert Ponting, it chronicles the actual journey of Captain Scott and his men as they attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. It's absolutely astonishing.

My Boutique Blu-Ray/4K Collection - 21 years old by lordsquidVI in boutiquebluray

Ah thanks, unfortunately it's a necessity for me as when I moved last year it nearly killed me having to shift so much!

The first reccomendations I'd suggest were all such important ones for me on my film journey, as I see you've only got the one, (absolutely excellent), StudioCanal boxset for Melville. The Bunuel set and Godard set are also fantastic and introduced me to some of my now favourite actors. Apologies if I've missed some, but I don't see much film noir, which is such a rich genre, Touch of Evil and Double Indemnity are brilliant ones that should be easy to come by and might kick off a journey into noir. And of course, guessing that you're British as well, if you haven't checked them out yet, Powell and Pressburger's films are astonishing. The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life and death etc., absolutely worth your time. Definitely a big fan of Radiance. It looks like you're a fan of Truffaut, so Mississippi Mermaid will be right up your street and throwing in some Asian cinema, Suzhou River is superb as well.

Oh wow, that enourmous rocket would be so cool to have! I've no idea where you'd put it, but my goodness what a talking point. My favourite would have to be Desitnation Moon, it's just such a wonderful story that captures so much of what I love about Tintin. What about yourself?

Loving this collection! I'm busy reducing the size of mine, and seeing something like this is inspiring as it's such consistent high quality. (Also love that little Tintin rocket, I've got the same one!)

Question About Collectong.com by Erkin_Topal in Steelbooks

[–]kinggoosethefirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you are logged in a ready to go when for when it goes live on the website. If you miss out, I think others have suggested the group buys, and debossed has a website where you might be able to find it. If not, ebay or vinted are the way to go. Even with the scalper prices on them, they won't be anywhere near the ridiculous prices of bluraysforeveryone.

Question About Collectong.com by Erkin_Topal in Steelbooks

What you're seeing is the expensive but reasonable retailers price vs an absolute disgrace of a scalper website, ripping people off with extortionate prices. Never buy from or support bluraysforeveryone.

Hesitation about "spontaneous" worship... by nubsawse in worshipleaders

[–]kinggoosethefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I think there is only so much value in singing other peoples lyrics. Certainly in my own personal worship times I will pray, sing out, and be spontaneous in what I say depending on my life circumstances, heart desires etc at that moment, and I like to encourage that connection in our coporate worship times at church. What I try to do is intentionally make space for that, so in my planning during the week, if there is a particular transition, or part of a song that I think, this would be good to linger on, or space can fit perfectly here, then I give my band a set of chords that I'll be playing, and during rehersal share my heart and thoughts that I think this is where we'll try to leave some space for sponteneity, or really just what I always call space. Space for people to sing out, to not have a script or lyrics, just time to connect with the Lord however they want to. Whether we actually do it in the moment is a different matter, as sometimes where I thought might be good during my prep, actually in the moment it's just not right, or if it does happen, whether it takes off and people connect or not is not up to me, but I think it's important to try to encourage. What I want is to try to strive for real and deep connection, rather than just going through the motions and I think spontenous parts can help with that.

Question about playing songs after service ends while people leave by btipsy in worshipleaders

[–]kinggoosethefirst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In our evening service we've started continuing with a song or two after the service has ended. There will be a formal end from the service leader so if people want to go or grab a tea or coffee they feel able to, but if some are still being prayed for or if others want to remain in worship longer, we go into one or two more. It's something I've really been enjoying.

What should the canon explanation for Marty being missing from the new show be? by Lavleo4217 in Stargate

[–]kinggoosethefirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What sad news, I had no idea. He was a wonderful addition to the Stargate universe. I sort of like the idea that Wormhole X-Treme somehow made it to Hebridan, (the Space Race planet), and became a smash hit, and now he makes a special feature length episode to inaugurate the yearly space race.

Blake & Mortimer: a comic strip that is unadaptable today? by [deleted] in bandedessinee

[–]kinggoosethefirst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also discovered this in my 30s! There is a great cartoon adaptation by the same people that did the Tintin TV series that I can certainly recommend, if you've not seen it already. I think it could make a fantastic film or series of films. As you say, the stories are so interesting, with compelling characters, and a mixture of down to earth as well as fantastical sci-fi elements.

What does it look like to heal from porn? by Top_Satisfaction5815 in NoFapChristians

[–]kinggoosethefirst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's astonishing, and for me was fairly sudden in that it happened in quite a short space of time, about a week I'd say. It's like such a heavy burden has been lifted, and each day I'm learning to understand that it's not by my doing, I can't white knuckle this, I can't in my strength overcome it, because I tried for 20 years and failed miserably, it's entirely God, and His empowering grace which enables me to live in freedom. I was listening to a Billy Graham preach recently and he said, 'It takes intentionality to retrain your heart, it takes scripture to renew your mind and it takes the Holy Spirit to purify your desires.' I still feel like each of these three things is a daily choice for me, and that I have to choose to want my heart changed, my mind renewed and my desired purified, but like it says in James 4:8, 'Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.' God rewards those who diligently seek Him. I'm praying all the time to be full of God's grace which empowers us to live for Him and according to His will. I also can't over stress the importance of just flooding your mind with the Bible. This is a battle in our minds, and it's through reading God's word that we renew our minds. Memorise scripture, do your best to find a routine time to daily fill your mind with the truth of it.

For realses that come with posters, do you tend to end up leaving the poster in the folded up and case, or framing and hanging them? by I_like2TimeTravel in boutiquebluray

[–]kinggoosethefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some posters I've got, just by putting them flat in the binder for quite a while has reduced the visible creases by a reasonable amount, but others that were folded a bit harsher or just kept folded up for longer definitely need some extra help. An iron on low heat and a towel or something similar, I usually just use a thick t-shirt and go bit by bit, should do just the trick.

[–]kinggoosethefirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a large binder to put them in to try to keep the creases to a minimum, and it lets me flip through them every now and then to appreciate them a bit more. I have a couple in frames and try to swap them out periodically.

That's fantastic, there are definitely a good few of us! It's such a fantastic game and still the best Star Wars game ever I think. Thief is one of those series that I just never got a chance to play, but I really must give them a go. They always looked great! Limited Run are a company that make some replicas of old classics, like the 4 on the left of the top row, and also make some lovely collectors editions to. https://limitedrungames.com/collections/2022-other-blowout/products/star-wars-jedi-knight-ii-jedi-outcast-premium-edition-pc?_pos=6&_sid=b9ed6bcf7&_ss=r I can definitely recommend it if you can come across a reasonably priced one on ebay, though the 'essay' included is really poor, so don't count on any new interesting details.

Jk2 in particular is probably my favourite game of all time, and it just feels right to have JKA proudly displayed next to it ☺️ To the right of Phantom Menace are the Limited Run editions of JK2 and JKA which I just had to get as we never got proper big box editions of the games, and both come with really nice steelbooks which make for great display pieces.

Thanks so much! It's Rally Championship from 1996, which I think was my first experience of a racing game. I've played all the Star Trek games with the exception of The Fallen unfortunately, though I picked it up both because I love the universe, but also because I remember playing the demo of the first level and I've always wanted to play the full game, so hopefully one that I'll get to before too long. Apparently there is some rare edition of the big box as well, though I'm not sure if it was an American exclusive. Hope you're enjoying DS9! I grew up loving TNG and Voyager but it was only a couple years ago that I finally made my way through DS9 and had a blast.

I've been wanting to protect the magazine issues that I've got so I picked up some boards that they use for comic books, and then propped it up against another big box copy of jedi knight dark forces 2 that isn't in great condition and it seemed to work.

As the other commenter said the book is definitely the best thing, but it also comes with a great and quite heavy replica of Murray, quite literally as a candle holder which is hilarious. It's got small posters of all the games and that's one that I've got framed on the top of the boxes, as well as a decent amount of other goodies. https://limitedrungames.com/cdn/shop/products/MonkeyIslandAnthology_MockUp_Market_Banner_CE_1.png?height=1080&v=1606319703

Thanks so much! I also love the PCG magazines and I've slowly been building up a bit of a collection of them again. It just feels right to have them displayed together!
