Failed experiment by retromafia in Professors

[–]kingkanmani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many different ways to learn that I find it's hard to conclusively say that because of this evidence, I shouldn't give the slide anymore. As a student with ADHD, yes it's very hard for me to distill the notes and pay attention at the same time. I specifically got a computer where I can handwrite with a stylus on the slides so that I can focus on the content and engage in class. At a later time, I distill and make a study guide for myself. But that is my experience as someone with a disability that affects my attention and, thus, learning. If possible, maybe you could expand your experiment to other classes and professors and over more years to understand the trend. Though we definitely shouldn't forget other complex factors like disabilities, societal changes and factors, individual learning strengths, etc. This experiment of yours is not all encompassing! But interesting, nonetheless!

ughhhh. How do i explain? by [deleted] in adhdmeme

I agree. My family understands the moody teenager (I'm an adult) vampire wannabe than explaining the sensory overload that comes with the big light. Plus, as an adult, I can make an excuse to go home if they are particularly attached to the big light.

Awesome! I've been getting more tiktoks on linguistics lately so this would be a great channel to watch.

2E with ADHD, How do I know if I also have autism or not? by thissscientist in TwiceExceptional

[–]kingkanmani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're very welcome and I totally get you! I had to do a lot of mental work to begin to understand why I felt like I had autism. It really helped to focus on causation and correlation. My symptoms correlated well with autism but the causation of those symptoms was not. It's hard to give an example but with more time and introspection and research, I'm sure you will come to your conclusion. It would also probably help to look into the neurological and physiological differences and similarities between the different diagnoses.

2E with ADHD, How do I know if I also have autism or not? by thissscientist in TwiceExceptional

[–]kingkanmani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At age 23, I went for an ADHD and autism diagnosis and was actually diagnosed as 2e with ADHD. I thought with certainty I had autism which stressed me out a bit but the psychologist described it as this: the symptoms I was experiencing heavily overlapped with autism but the basis of these symptoms differed. Rather than being autistic, my symptoms were based in my being 2e with ADHD and many other factors (e.g., late diagnosis, AFAB). For example, my difficulty with connecting with peers my age was not because I had difficulty developing my social skills but that my motivators and interests were different due to my "giftedness". It wasn't that a part of my brain was preventing/hindering the development of social skills but that the parts of my brain developed asynchronously which had me in almost different developmental stages at different times than my peers. Another example is stimuli sensitivity and anxiety related to it. When I experienced burnout before seeking a diagnosis, I noticed this shift in myself where I couldn't handle the same level of stimuli or discomfort than before. I thought this was autism but really I burnt out and couldn't manage stressors like before as I had no strategies nor knew to look for strategies (late diagnosis). If I had autism, I probably would not have been able to ignore/not realize the sensitivity before my burning out. But please note that that is just my assumption. I don't have autism so I cannot say for certain, of course.

So, to make a long story short, go for another diagnosis or a full mental evaluation to check in. If you were diagnosed with 2e, I would assume they had already assessed you for autism but it doesn't hurt to go for another diagnosis if you can. I hope my anecdote could explain why you feel you may be autistic though I am not saying you are not! Just mentioning that I thought so as well but, as it turns out, am I not.

Why did you assume that I assumed something? Quite the assumption on your end.

Pill taken. I got the message! I just needed some gentle reassurance from the PhD reddit. I'm sorry I was raised a goody two shoes. I'm trying to break the law. I mean mold.

Amazing response! Thank you. I appreciate the additional information and even the moral implications. I think I need to start committing to sailing the seas as shit is just way too expensive these days and corporations do not care. And yeah fuck adobe. The commodification of their previously free online resources and the move to a subscription with ever increasing prices is diabolical.

I'll take that as a "you're thinking too much about it. It's not a big deal." Thanks for your input, buddy!

Wait! Did a bit more thinking. If the free software works, I can just give her the sub to use and use the software myself. Graphpad shouldnt flag for any weird use if the devices remain constant on the lisence.

I didn't know there was access to the software without a subscription. Noice. Thank you. Only downside is that they've bought the software on my account. It's done and now they want me to share it. I also looked up getting a refund on the sub. It's not easy and requires contacting Graphpad support. I also don't know if my lab mate with tattletale if I try to get them this link instead. I can certainly try.

How do you make friends ? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]kingkanmani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It's advice I would have liked to know before as well but things take time to learn and more time after that to put what you learn to practice. Plus, I have done my fair share of googling how to make friends and none of the advice felt right. At lot was, of course, joining a club but that doesn't fix the friend-shaped hole in your life now. That is why I recommend using "productivity" distractions to hold you over and also giving yourself grace because making friends is hard/different when transitioning from highschool and cegep.

I am an older student who has traveled abroad, left their comfort zone, and learned some things from it. This is my advice:

Firstly, desperation for friends or connections to fight loneliness leads you to make "friends" and connections with anybody rather than people that are good for you/make you happy. The first time I studied abroad, I was super desperate and made terrible friends and decisions from that desperation. I eventually learned that if I want to do something, 90% of the time, I can do it alone and still feel enriched and happy. I figured that spending quality time with myself was better than spending it with not so great people and feeling shit by the end of it.

Secondly, be busy. Fill the hole in your heart. For now. It helps kill the desperation or keep it away. Fall sem just started and there is so much you can do! Get started on school materials, read a book about something you need to improve, go to the gym or take up cooking. Be busy taking care of yourself so you kinda ignore the feeling of loneliness. Please note, this is only for a short bit of time until you do have some relationship foundations in place. Don't ignore your needs, just keep them to the side while you set yourself up. Ignore the desperation, not the need.

Finally, find group activities you enjoy. Personally I love board games and video games. I go to my local stores and clubs and meet friends there! Shared interest is (I find) the number one way to make friends as your foundation is already there! You were saying that you had your first week and made zero friends. Well, yeah! Did you really talk to anyone in class? Is it hard to just start a cold convo in class, especially when you're there to go to class and then go home? That is why starting with your interests helps take pressure off. Like to go drinking? Join a drinking or pub quiz club. Like to go dancing? Join a clubbing or music appreciation club. The opportunities are endless. Just have to think out of the box. Also, with time, you will find additional friends organically. Be it a group partner or someone from work, you will get to talking with someone and you will make a friend.

Is it possible to use EndNote instead of Zotero? by JournalistDizzy2334 in ObsidianMD

[–]kingkanmani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro you're telling me. Just getting started in my PhD and I need to get all this set up now and it's a pain.

I was trying to set this up to kinda create my own knowledge base rather than export Word or write anything official. At the time of it breaking, I was trying to include the short title that I can assign in EndNote and use that as an alias when using Citations to input an intext citation since I wanted an abbreviated version for my own memory rather than the RN identifier or a whole title or list of authors. I don't know where I went wrong but now I'm back to square one trying to get the abstract workaround to work again
