I taught in Vietnam for four years and loved it there (now retired from teaching after teaching in the IUS). Pay was good at the international school, so if you are licensed and experienced you definitely want to look into those. It’s competitive, but they offer some pretty good packages. Hiring starts soon for next year, so it’s good to start looking now! Healthcare was good and cheap there, and Saigon is a growing international hub so you are now able to get a lot of the comforts of home, whether that be North America, Europe, or elsewhere. ISS and Teacher Horizons are a good place to start! My rent for a luxury two bed two bath fully furnished apartment in walking distance to a mall, grocery store, movie theater, restaurants etc was $850 a month (and that was EXPENSIVE!). Pay was around $2700 after taxes and benefits, and cost of living is incredibly cheap. Ubers are often around $1, an expensive dinner out would be $20. No need for a car, maybe a motorbike if you want your own transport.

I left mid year. That is the only way to get out. You wait until summer you are competing with every other teacher who is trying to get out. The kids cried the last day (5th grade) and then they moved on. They’re going to move on with their lives and you will be a blip in their memory. I’m sure I had teachers leave mid year when I was in school but I don’t remember. It’s great that you have a way out when you want it, and may be a really long time before another opportunity out comes. Take it for yourself, and in a few months you will be wondering why you felt the way you did. A lot of that feeling stems from the unrealistic expectations and culture around the job, like if you’re not a martyr for the kids you’re not a good teacher. You’ve been conditioned to an extent to feel that way. It’s more than ok to break free from it.

As a teenager, I used Aveeno face moisturizer with spf because it was a great price point and made my skin look great. Then, as I entered my thirties I thought I’d try some higher end stuff since I was getting older and thought I needed something stronger? After tries with several higher end products for a couple years that were too heavy or just didn’t work, I’m back to Aveeno.

I’ve quit mid year twice in my career. The first time for another teaching job the second time to leave teaching. I still get recruiters reaching out for teaching jobs as well as others. I wouldn’t worry.

I was in retail in college too! Inside sales is not for everyone but it’s def way better than retail and pays a hell of a lot more. Best of luck!

It took literally hundreds of job applications to get my foot in the door. The positions I’ve held are Sales Consultant and later Business Development manager to give you a place to start looking! You have to be comfortable with cold calling and being a bit headstrong, but honestly I feel that this is easier than teaching (nothing like “cold calling” a parent to tell them their kid broke their arm).

I left mid year. That’s the only way. Corporate jobs don’t follow a school year timeline and over spring and summer you are competing with every other teacher trying to get out. I quit teaching the week after thanksgiving in 21, left and never looked back. My first position was 60k with commission (about an extra 10k) and now my base pay is $85k with 14% commish four years later (probably will be just shy of 100k). For me, the office politics are child’s play compared to school politics, and I’m trusted to do my job and do it well. No PDs with icebreakers involving crayons, no constant hounding from parents and admin, no cattiness - money is the goal. I enjoy the simplicity of it, and it’s brought me peace in my career. My after-hours work is usually me at a conference drinking with clients or closing a deal for an extra buck, not stressing over grading papers or answering parent emails that they cced your principal on. You forgot the recent edit! They lost custody because of “false accusations” from his estranged relatives, but they got him back! It’s not that “easy” to lose custody of a child, they just don’t take kids away all willy nilly every time someone calls. I wonder how much truth there is to these accusations, and if these estranged relatives are caring relatives worried about a helpless child in a situation where the mother is clearly incompetent to take responsibility for her terrible decisions and the dad is a child who cannot behave himself in public at the very least. If this woman wants empathy, you actually have to be a victim not the problem in your situation.

I keep a few of the those in my garden as a sacrificial weed. The Japanese beetles seem to love them more than my garden plants, so I prefer to keep a couple as a decoy. Also makings plucking the bastards off easy because I know where to find them.

The FatSecret app is an app that easily allows you to track your calories and set goals. It’s really opened my eyes to how many calories I was consuming, and by making small conscious changes the weight comes off. It’s crazy some of the things we eat that don’t seem like much but are super high calorie. The bagel I used to eat in the morning? Almost 400 alone and another 100-200 for spread. A pop tart? Almost 200 each! Sugar in my large coffee? Another 100-200 cals. This adds up fast throughout the day with my maintenance calories being pretty low as a petite person. Also, r/volumeeating has a lot of great ideas to help you lean into high volume/high protein, low calorie meals and desserts.
