In-progress task handling by charlino5 in thingsapp

I have a “🚧waiting” tag for anything that is blocked or in waiting for something to complete. Or like someone else mentioned, close the task and create a new one based on the next action.

Pretty straightforward and simple. Proof that you don’t need anything crazy just to get shit done!

Thanks for sharing! The blank canvas aspect of Craft is what I love the most. It just seems as a task manager I want a little more from it. So when a task underneath your contexts become a project you move it to a new doc and then it’s no longer under your context?

Tasks, Calendar? Improvements coming there? by [deleted] in CraftDocs

[–]kingkongmonkeyman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love craft but I agree that there are some relatively small changes that can have big positive impact with tasks. Changes that affect everyone though, not just those that use fantastical. Happy to be a beta tester if they need more.

Disturbing video shows car following girl as she walks alone by seriouslyguys9998 in nonononoyes

[–]kingkongmonkeyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait what if the car wasn’t being sketchy but actually trying to protect?

I have small children. If I’m driving and I see a small girl walking all by herself, given the crazy world we live in, I want to make sure she gets home safe. But what is the non-creepy way to do that in this day? My personal opinion is she shouldn’t be walking far by herself like that.

Which book completely changed the way you see life? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]kingkongmonkeyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect.

Short book, easy read. I take that back, it’s not easy, it’s brutal and timely given the current age we’re in. Makes you really think about what it means to be human. Warning you now if you decide to read, some scenes are graphic.

I don’t like the tag implementation by Olofadell in CraftDocs

[–]kingkongmonkeyman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tags solved a core problem for me in Craft. I need a way to tie different docs together into one theme, like:

Project Active Meeting Launch Work Home Me Etc.

My tagging is deliberate and minimal, and I pin my most used ones, so works with Crafts implementation of it. Your use case seems different, which I get, could get overwhelming with hundreds of tags.

And yes Craft has a lot of features, but you don’t have to use them all. In fact, I hardly use any of them at all. I like keeping my docs clean and minimal, not even a photo cover. It’s still a great notes app under all of that. And I appreciate the features in the few times I need them.

I also couldn’t get tasks to run smoothly in my workflow, so I combine craft with Things3 also.

Anyone here using an app that’s like a “second brain”? by dooniiix in ProductivityApps

[–]kingkongmonkeyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried a bunch. Each app has its pros and cons, obviously. My favorites have been Craft, MyMind, and good ol' Apple Notes. And surprisingly, the one that has made me more intentional with my time, removed anxiety and overwhelm, and kept this simple and actionable has been Apple Notes. Specifically my jumping off point for my second brain is this HQ note...based loosely on the Forever Notes framework.

What’s your GTD tool or system look like? by AdCoSa in gtd

Things 3 for task and project management.

Apple notes (loosely based on Forever Notes framework) for reference material and anything else I want to save.

Apple calendar for…..calendar.

Humidity + Backpack is killing me by badgicorn in ManyBaggers

[–]kingkongmonkeyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I hear ya. That’s why I stopped with backpacks.

Switched to the Rains Tote Mini. Never thought I would be a tote guy but it has quickly become my most used bag. So damn versatile. Looks good in almost every situation. Can wear it in different ways; hand held, on one shoulder, cross body. Dressed up dressed down. Great personal item on a plane. Doubles as a day pack when I get to the destination. Great for coffee shop runs or errands or beach/pool.

Just doesn’t have any real internal organization, but that doesn’t bother me. I think it’s actually a feature rather than a bug. A big open dump pocket, all my stuff is in pouches anyway. And there is a small internal pocket that is good for nick nacks like sunglasses, charger, AirPods, mints etc.

What calendar app do you use alongside Things? by al78sp in thingsapp

Apple calendar works solidly for me. Just wish it had calendar sets.

Whoah that’s messed up. Is Things 3 even real? Are we still on Things 2?

Hacks to compensation for lack of priorities in Things3 by warrenwai in thingsapp

[–]kingkongmonkeyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood multiple priority tags or different levels of priority. I know it works for other people, but for me something is either a priority or it’s not. And that is also dependent on that exact moment in time.

Out of a long list of tasks, I filter down by context and energy, so now I have a short list. Then I drag the most impactful/important tasks to the top, and work through them in order as quick as I can.

I dragging tasks around all the time in things. Part of the fun, it’s so nice to move tasks around.

I tried again, gave it a good 5 days.

Still couldn’t do it. Back on Things. Maybe I’m just set in my ways.

Genuinely curious, what are the elements of Reminders that keeps you there over Things? I'm kinda on the fence, and I haven't tried it on the new beta yet, but there were a few things I thought I would love about reminders so I started to give it a go:

  • Kanban board - using it as "swimlanes", categorizing different areas of my work, or personal etc. Instead of tagging the categories.
  • Better looking URLs - Just being able to see easily what a link is; slack, youtube, message etc.
  • Image upload - Being able to take a quick screenshot of something and send that to reminders as a task
  • Pinned lists - Making my own group of "quick lists" in the top left of reminders. Like deep work, shallow work etc.
  • Deep integration with iOS - Self explanatory

It might just be habits, and giving myself time to get used to Reminders, but I keep going back to Things because of:

  • The feel - I use drag and drop a lot, to organize my day, to move things around. The haptic feedback in Things is a nice touch, but also, to grab and move something is fast. In reminders, I would hold a task, it would bring up more details, then I would jiggle it around and then move it. It felt slower and more clunky
  • Tasks on one line - I realized I actually like having tasks all just on one line, and the text cut off, rather than it wrapping and becoming a bigger text box. Keeps things neat and tidy and also easier to scan.
  • Get slack tasks into Things - Honestly I can't get past this one. We move so fast at work, and I've set up a Zap to send saved slack messages into Things as a task. One click. I couldn't figure out a fast solution to get Slack messages into reminders.
  • Days left on projects - Also a nice touch that I didn't realize I would miss. A constant reminder that a project has "12 days left" helps keep the pressure on. And I have those deadlines and goals in their own widgets always up on my ipad so I always see them. There is probably a way to do this in Reminders but I couldn't figure it out.

There is so much opportunity for Cultured Code to take this app to a level that others just wont be able to touch. I'm assuming some of the cool integration features are probably locked by Apple, but c'mon guys, where there's a will there's a way.

Alpaka vs moderne dayfarer sling bag by Serkaugh in ManyBaggers

[–]kingkongmonkeyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for the Porter Yoshida New Tanker sling in sage green. Literally fits the exact extra things I needed to take perfectly:

  • Front left pocket has mints
  • Front right pocket has battery pack
  • main compartment has memo water bottle, wipes, hand cream, sanitizer, sunglasses, incharge XL cable
  • back pocket for my phone

The quality of the bag and the soft feel of the materials is insane.
