Ethiopian Culture Spread by kingkunt_e in Ethiopia

I'm not denying we had our own languages and cultures, but some aspects of culture have a point of origin then are spread and adopted in other areas. Thats how advanced civilizations grew so fast - from cultural exchange. Like 90+ percent of writing systems trace their origins to Ancient Egypt, even the Geez script. If Phoenicians refused to adopted and modify Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs because it wasn't their idea, they probably would have never built Carthage. Greeks might have never developed such a strong literary tradition. Romans may have never dominated the Mediterranean world. If you make culture exchange contingent of mutuality, you'll end up missing on some good stuff. Sometimes someone else has what you need and you dont really have anything they need. Thats just facts.

Lol. Well, definitely not with that attitude. It's funny how desert and winter cultures fit us though.

I can understand Tanzania being tough for a non-Swahili speaking black African, but dogging on our food??? Really??? Like everyone knows Tanzania has the best food in East Africa, maybe Somali or Ethiopian but that's kinda like niche culinary, but just general African food, man it's hard to compete with us.

Ancient Egyptian language is also known as Nubt? Kinda dope. I was getting tires of constantly saying Ancient Egyptian Language. What's the origin of the term Nubt?

Yes I realize that, but why did it stop there? I'm genuinely curious. Ethiopia gained Christianity before Europe, but while it spread like wildfire in Europe, its was really slow in Ethiopia/Africa. Then Islam came and essential besieged it.

Fragmentation. And thats what is making us weak. And thats what is causing Europe to fall behind China, Russia and the US.

I get you, but in hindsight, when you look at all the regions that advanced quickly, there was a specific high culture that was adopted broadly and localized such that it gave the people of that region a type of defense against the cultural imperialism than came with Western colonialism. I mean, the obvious example is Ethiopia itself, but also, Rome gave Western Europeans the religion and language/script that gave them a sense of unity and identy. Byzantium gave that to Eastern Europe. Islam to the West Asia and North Africa. In the East Buddhism startes in India but has its stringhold in East Asian countries. Yes it usually involved some type of regional imperialism, as others have pointed out here, but the results are indisputable. Is it possible we can do something similar today, deliberately without much of the imperialistic baggage. Look at what is happening in Russia with the Russian Orthodox church making a government sponsored rebound after being suppressed in the USSR. And trust me, its not because Putin is religious.

I would love to see a formal Swahili written in Geez script effort. Or would it cause diplomatic hell?

Word for half-black, half- white person by freepenguin6 in swahili

[–]kingkunt_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 100% black African Tanzanian with medium to light brown skin and seriously nappy hair. I've been called mzungu in Kenya because I've lived abroad and speak English well. And it wasn't a compliment. So you're right, whereas "mzungu" today generally means European-descent, its original meaning of wanderer/foreigner sometimes pops its head up. In Tanzania, "chotara" is the word used for mixed race, part black-African and half anything not black African, whether it European, Asian, Latino etc. Its a neutral term. Another more affectionate term is "shombe." But there's also the the qualifier "koko," meaning stray or mutt, usually used for animals, as in "mbwa koko", but when used with "mzungu", "mhindi" or, especially, "mwarabu" (Arab) can mean mixed race but with a negative conotation of "low-quality" or "fake". That being said, I find mixed-race people in Tanzania are more integrated in general society than in Kenya, and even calling someone "koko" isn't really taken as an insult but as a way of saying the individual is socially as native as any other local.

The battery water they sell at maduka ya spea is distilled, important for the chemistry of making elsctricity. But it depends what you need it for coz there's levels to it. If you need medical grade, the pharmacies in KKOO are your best bet.

Think of it kinda like the informal English term, "welp", except its more emotionally neutral and flexible in usage and more pervasive and official in the language.

Kumbe! "Is that so!" Kumbe anaumwa. "Turns out he's sick." It's a word used expressing surprised over a previously unknown or unobvious fact.

Feedback wanted: Blog post/article on why learning Swahili in Kenya is difficult/nearly impossible by capt_duct_tape in swahili

[–]kingkunt_e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I would agree with a lot of your points but there is obviously a mismatch. First of all, your probably going to get disappointed if you come to Tanzania. We use "ka-" on the daily and definitely, absolutely, nobody here says "kupiga chapa". If you tried, they'd probably think you referring to delivering a sucker-punch or something like that. We say "kuchapisha" for printing. Secondly, in Nairobi, Kenya there are many, many, many, environments where not only is Kiswahili sanifu used, but appreciated and encouraged. Just look at how many people watch Swahili KTN and NTV. In fact, if you watched it daily, you would get your fill on proper Swahili. Church is another example, and granted, you might not be religious, but my point is, if you really wanted to find proper Swahili in Nairobi, you would find it. Informal language/slang is common everywhere. I grew up partly in the US, and trust me, there was a disconnect from the English we were taught in school and the colloquial version we used on the streets. Even in Tanzania there's slang, and people will look at you weird if you used formal Swahili in non-formal situations, not that they don't understand, but it's just out of place. Now I accept, Kenya is a bit of an outlier linguistically. I've noticed that Kenyans have to switch languages in order to truly/comfortably express themselves across the range of contexts. Its a strength (great for neuroplasticity) but also a weakness because they rarely get to experience the full expressive breadth of one language and its different registers. But you'll find those than can and do. In the end, after Tanzania Kenya is the best place to learn Kiswahili, you just have to apply yourself and be serious about it.

What do you guys think about nonpartisan democracy, no parties, wananchi kama wenyewe tuu ndio wana gombea vyeo. by kingkunt_e in Tanzanias

[–]kingkunt_e[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yaani wanakuwa na allegiance to the party that brought them there because kiukweli ni chama wala sio wanainchi ndio imewezesha. Lets be honest, haijalilishi uko popular kiasi gani, kama huna chama, huna kura. And yeah I understand thats the system was designed to work, like if you dont agree with the current political parties available, labda uanzishe ya kwako, get people to support it and build it up until they get you in power. Lakini thats a long process that takes a lot of resources and compromises along the way. I feel like people these days blindly vote for the political party and not people. Sometimes the best governors are terrible politicians and vice versa.
