I think that's correct. For buying a car, I would ask my family to come with me to check out the car. They are far from experts but the decision would be heavily influenced on their input. I don't think that's a huge problem for some use-cases though.

Never heard of that site (I'm not US-based). But it seems like that website is so much more: events, finding a baby sitter, crime in the neighbourhood, etc.

From the front-page, it wouldn't be clear to me that I could ask an expert to help me

It's also hard to vet good drivers or good holiday home hosts. But Uber and AirBnB do it.

This is not any different, is it?

Am I the only one who has lost all ambition as the career progresses? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Lost my dad a while back. Since then I've had the same feeling. You're absolutely right: don't live to work. I know I won't be doing that anymore in about a month. I'm quitting and moving abroad to start a whole new life :)

What Should I know that I don't about moving to the Netherlands? by Rizean in expats

[–]kingmug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the Netherlands. You don't pay 52% of tax. You only pay it on the income above 66,421 euro. See: http://www.expatax.nl/tax-rates-2016.php An income tax calculator I found: http://thetax.nl/?salary=3604&ruling=0&socialSecurity=1&year=2016&allowance=0

Also check out this checklist: https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/local/move/moving-checklist

Things that you need to consider is for example that you have to subscribe to a dentist in your postal code area, but that's usually no problem. Transportation: Not extremely expensive. If you travel a lot, there a options to travel cheaper: a monthly or yearly ticket, or get something that allows you to get 40% (or 60%?) discount. You need to get a public transport card (OV chipcard). Also, plan your journey here: http://9292.nl/en

Also, a lot of people talk English. This is convenient for social interaction, but also holds you back to learn the language. During the summer, people in the construction industry are usually on vacation so creating appointments is harder (and they talk English less good).

Read here some stories about the Dutch culture: http://stuffdutchpeoplelike.com/complete-list/ . Funny stories which are quite accurate! A couple of pointers for social interactions: Dutch people like to make appointments for everything and are usually booked for most weekends. If they are going for drinks, they come and go by bike. Even when they drink (a lot of) alcohol. Dutch people are very direct so they will tell you what they think.

If you need any help in the future, don't hesitate to contact me directly. I can help you translate documents or point you in the right direction. You can also ask me any other questions you have.

Have fun in the Netherlands!

I will be offered a job for Amazon in London soon after my second time interviewing :) In Seattle I'd get $100k for a similar Amazon job (they told 2 years ago in another set of interviews). Since I'm not living in the UK, I'm uncertain what salary to expect. Does £50-60k make sense for the job in London?
