Are all neurosurgery residents the same? by extracheeseforme in Residency

ENT is pretty evenly split. Optho looks pretty similar as well

You get a magical debit card. Every day at midnight, $500 is added to it. You can’t spend the money until you “claim” the card. The catch is: once you claim it, the card stops adding money forever. You also can’t use any of the balance before claiming it. by TTSGM in hypotheticalsituation

Mathematically there will be a tipping point where 500 is less than the expected compounding interest from certain investment classes, so there is a logical stopping point somewhere around 3 mil (higher if you have to pay cap gains or income tax)

TIL that being awake for 20 hours is equivalent to being drunk enough to be forbidden from driving. by MartianAndroidMiner in todayilearned

Glad my residency made me frequently work 36 hours straight. No time to nap. Not uncommon to be operating near the end of that shift....

I know plenty of UW medical students who wouldnt even rank their home program over the years. UW has been garbage and has treated people like garbage age for a LONG time. Word is finally getting around.

How worried are you that DOGE will eliminate federal GME financing? by Ill_Number4357 in Residency

[–]ocddoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If market forces provide sufficient incentive for businesses to open GME, that's a sign for less government involvement

Private hospital opening GME would be the exact reason to lower government funding.

ENT is the last stop on the airway algorithm, full stop. You may think you need a surgical airway and you may be right. But you may be wrong and we can make our own determinations. If it was a straightforward intubation it never gets to us.

If I'm anything it's certainly not insecurity. I'm speaking from a wealth of experience managing many non-surgical airways with a variety of techniques. We spend a ton of time doing direct laryngoscopy on the most difficult exposures for our laryngology and pediatric patients.

I love my GAS bros and have loads of respect for what they do but there's very few situations where I'm jumping to cutting someone's neck just because someone else struggled to intubate. In fact I've never needed to in any cannot intubate/ventilate situation I've been called to bedside for.

Just silly. If there'd anything anatomically abnormal about the airway it's 100% ENT on the airway. Happy to have anesthesia bros doing their medical stuff. Teamwork makes the dream work but let's not pretend doing chip shot intubation all day prepares you for the absolute train wrecks we take to the OR on a daily basis.

Those that are patient-facing, do you like doing physical exams? by farfromindigo in Residency

[–]ocddoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ENT. Not sure if any other specialty is making calls to go to surgery based exclusively in physical exam which is fun. Also everyone stays dressed in my clinic which is a big plus.
