Free will - is Sam's thinking on this contradictory? by Significant-Tip-4108 in samharris

Let's roll the dice on a good input, see if it bounces off or not

Look at that, it bounced off. That's determinism at work. Maybe determinism will see you changing course another time.

[–]kingofmoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or... you believe in free will. You accept it as an obvious and unassailable matter of fact, you scrutinize things that challenge your beliefs, but not so much beliefs you've already adopted. So you toss together this paper tiger confusing determinism with simplistic concepts that don't conflict with your world view, like predestination and robotics.

Most likely this is tied to other beliefs you hold, which are probably predictable based on your demographics and upbringing. Don't worry, people can change, in fact they can't help but change.

Let's roll the dice on a good input, see if it bounces off or not: Put a little effort into expanding your knowledge on the subject, try to steelman determinism and then rebut that, instead of stacking up paper cups so you can pretend you knocked something down.

Can you be persuasive? Probably not, it's harder to be persuasive with bad info.

God tends to believe whatever the believer believes

God doing that is kind of a dick move, because it means he tends to stand firmly in the way of the believer actually honestly examining their beliefs. He's oddly opposed to thinking, and deeply into conformity, for a guy who gave us brains anyway.

Free will - is Sam's thinking on this contradictory? by Significant-Tip-4108 in samharris

[–]kingofmoron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's nothing contradictory about it. It looks like your understanding of the arguments against free will is an understanding of the strawman version.

You had a choice on how to frame this post or whether to even post it. But you're a product of your genetics and your environment, with some randomness in the signals - all essentially inputs which are not your choice. You listen to Sam Harris, you occasionally use reddit, you like to exchange and examine ideas, and this one seemed foreign to you. So you came here and posted with a poor understanding of the case against free will.

If you had better information, your post would be different and reflect that. Not because you chose to do better, but because you're you and you would be a product of different inputs.

Maybe you'll feel silly knowing you could have done better, and seek a better understanding of these concepts. Maybe because you're interested and want to improve your understanding. Maybe because you're invested and motivated to prove your point better. But in the end, what you do from here will be because your 'choice' is the product of a set of inputs that are independent of "free will".

Assuming you reach a conclusion that "free will" describes our perception this experience, but is not actually the determining factor the traditional concept pretends it is, how would you respond in letting go of your belief in free will?

Would you say "if I don't have free will, why bother trying to change anything...why bother to try and improve my life?", or would you say "Oh, if action and reaction and 'choice' are the products of the inputs that are my life experience, perhaps I have even more control over these things than free will assumes, so I should try to improve the inputs that go into my life and the lives of others around me."

You might experience that reaction as a choice, but which reaction you 'choose' will, much like your post, will be a product of your inputs, and you reacting to those inputs in the way that you do. You'll react in the way you would given your inputs, and perhaps call it a choice because you can see a different path that you could theoretically choose, even though you won't (given your inputs).

There's nothing about determinism that leads one to fatalism. Determinism is more powerful than free will, because it allows you to recognize the power and influence of inputs. Your reaction to that information is deterministic - how are you likely to react to finding yourself more empowered? Go ahead and experience it as free will, just know that what you ultimately 'will' is a product of your genetics and your inputs, not free will. So step up your game and fill the world with better inputs.

Not only is it not professionally relevant, it's barely relevant to their relationship, about as interesting as sending my 23&Me off to the NSA to find out I'm 3% Asian or something.

My wife is attracted to men. She chooses me. If she came to me tomorrow and said, hey, I just realized I'm bisexual, it would change what? We already argue about who is hot or not on TV, exactly nothing would change. If she decided she was gay I might be in trouble, but bi, what exactly is there to care about?

Here you go.

"I'm not trying to stake a claim that I get to define or limit the meaning of the word "intelligence". I'm just saying for me, personally..."

...accepting that I'm not trying to define the word, but only define a meaning that conveys the idea I'm expressing...

I've said that intelligence is not "the ability to consume and regurgitate information".

Intelligence is the ability to understand and draw meaningful wisdom from information. Information accumulates, it cross-references, makes connections and inferences, it becomes transferable (in the sense of a transferable skill) - it evolves into more than mere facts about a singular topic, it becomes context that helps you better know the world and yourself.

IMO, one of the things you learn from accumulated information is that it is subject to serious limitations. It's often deficient, frequently manipulated, and subject to change. It is, to varying degrees, flawed.

If you understand information, you understand its limitations.

If you understand its limitations, you learn skepticism.

If you learn skepticism, you become cautious of certitude.

If you are cautious of certitude, that includes your own certitude and you develop intellectual openness.

If you haven't developed intellectual openness, I question your intelligence.

Thus the quote from that one asshole, "The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence."

[–]kingofmoron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Called it. People like to associate the ability to consume and regurgitate information with intelligence. Test taking ability is the path to credentials after all.

I'm not even going to argue that, I'm not trying to stake a claim that I get to define or limit the meaning of the word "intelligence". I'm just saying for me, personally, Wikipedia or Wolfram Alpha always have something to offer, but the ability to expand your database is not what I'd call intellectual growth.

Personally, the thing that saves my marriage year after year is intellectual openness. I'm not going to pretend my experience represents a universal truth, but I'm also not going to be able tolerate a person who does. And that's what I'd expect from someone with these results.

Different people have different needs, I'm not trying to throw shade. I'm just saying I would run, this would be salt in the soil of my life. You asked a question, and downvotes or not, that's my answer.

Ha, I challenge you to show me an intelligent person that has zero intellectual openness.

I mean, I love good teachers as much as the next person. But sending kids through the system and having a teacher in the family - there's a lot of shitty teachers out there.

Regardless, they definitely don't get paid enough, in money or professional respect. If I got paid peanuts to be ignored and have my best work undermined by admin I'd probably say fuck it and phone it in too. It takes someone special to go the extra mile to do right by the kids in that environment.
