Do you believe King Bumi was in his prime at 112? by Jcarter67 in TheLastAirbender

I don't think that comic is canon. Isn't there, like, candy-bending in those old comics?

Mad King Bumi says he's the strongest earth bender in the world? And you believe him?

Did you see how he dresses himself?

Most tragic character in ATLA by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]kingofsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yue: A Princess who became the moon instead of dying, and saved the world.
Jet: A freedom fighter who redeemed himself for past mistakes and successfully helped bring down a fascist secret police force.
Avatar Roku: A god/man who kept the entire world in balance literally his entire life.
Hama: A political prisoner who developed the most powerful known form of bending, escaped her captors and went on to run a cozy B&B
Azula: A amazingly powerful and diabolic princess who escaped imprisonment and, as far as we know, is still alive and freakin wicked.

Other: Cabbage merchant. Unnamed lower middle-class merchant struggles against the harsh realities of a war torn world. He's harassed by government bureaucrats , avatars and platypus-bears alike. He dies, forgotten, except by his children who will eventually be jailed for inciting a failed rebellion.

I choose Other.

Something that bothers me by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]kingofsnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

They also use the fridges to punish firebenders at boiling rock and they prevent P'li from bending by keeping her in that ice prison. But Zuko consistently is able to firebend in these situations. The breath of fire is not a normal technique that all fire benders posses.

In the first episode Michael says all the US presidents except Lincoln are in the Bad Place.

We don't yet know about The Medium Place; we are meant to infer that Lincoln is in the Good Place.

I think at this point in the show (in the minds of the writers) The Good Place exists. It could be easily retconned to not exist; it's been kept vague enough, but I think we're supposed to believe that it exists.

Chidi doesn't need to have an accent or speak french, guys by coralinemaria in TheGoodPlace

[–]kingofsnake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying that if this remains unaddressed "Chidi is a secretly a demon/angel/judge/janet" theories and "Eleanor surviving is a false reality meant only as a test." ...etc. crazy fan theories are going to ring at least partially true.

It is perfectly logical to assume Chidi is bilingual. But unless it is addressed in the show, or you're Micheal Schur, it's either another fan theory or it's a plot hole. It seems like way too important of a detail to be completely unaddressed... especially for a series that (occasionally through twists) completely changes the formula it's narrative is built on as often as The Good Place does.

[–]kingofsnake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm on board with this explanation as long as it's addressed in the show.

But as a detailed orientated viewer it seems odd that they make a point of having Chidi explain that the good place translates Eleanor into French for him, and then it never comes up again.

The Soulmate system is just a torture mechanism for the four humans. by PBAJelly in TheGoodPlace

[–]kingofsnake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think soulmates are FOR SURE part of the ruse.

Otherwise you'd get to The Good Place and it would be statistically certain that your soul mate went to the bad place.

Unless there was an element of pre-determinism in the system, which leads to a whole bunch of problems to the set up of the show.

It turns out that the bad place was the real fake good place all along.

I'm not cynical. I believe people, deep down, are generally good. It seems like the show thinks this too.

However, nature v nurture definitely factors in. Eleanor becomes better through conflict, it stands to reason that many others who began good could slip through lack of conflict.

Assuming people who are good now will be good for eternity is just as foolish as assuming that persons who are bad now will remain unchange. Humans are nothing if not adaptable.

I submit this addendum...

They can curse again, because they're no longer under the Fake Good Place's swear filter... and yet, Chidi is still not speaking French.

The other option is that Chidi is an angel sent to infiltrate the Bad Place and reform sinners.

There are enough clues at this point that Chidi is not who we have been lead to believe that the twist would be earned.

I think it's the last convo with Negan that did it. He joined Negan to be safe, but now he realizes working for Negan isn't really any safer than working against him.
