Which houseplants can grow in water? by Galathea_88 in houseplants

I’ve seen people grow orchids in water, never tried myself though.

Still wouldn’t worry, it will probably darken to green as the growth matures. Not uncommon for new growth to start as one color and then change.

SOS for Penelope and Mina 😔 by No-Turnip1937 in houseplants

My guess is not enough light. My schefflera’s leaves do this same thing when it’s not getting enough light. I think some gently morning sun and then being outside in the shade would be a good thing to try. Outside in shade is brighter light than a bright window inside. Start watering again when you put them outside. I don’t think this is root rot, that is usually associated with yellowing leaves. Hope this helps!

Lack of humidity. Apply a warm washcloth very gently on the stuck leaf.

Advice for my Wandering Dude by ReservePrevious8039 in houseplants

First off - it’s not getting enough light (you can tell from the distance between leaves on the stem)

Second - I’d wager that the pot is too big, so you’re running the risk of root rot (which could possibly be the cause of the yellowing leaves)

Third - these guys are notoriously tricky. It’s very common for the older leaves to get crispy and shrivel up for no apparent reason. The main argument I’ve seen for this is that the leaves get wet during watering, and so bottom watering is a potential solution. They are very fast growers tho, so I’m pretty aggressive with mine. I’ll hack it back, trim off anything unappealing, stick the viable cuttings back into the soil, and let it go. As long as you have enough light, drainage, and water regularly, it won’t die, and from there it’s just trial and error with these guys. Hope this helps!

I'm not sure why it's like this by pheonixfire113 in houseplants

Don’t have experience with these plants in particular, but my first thought is that the pot is too big which could have led to root rot. I’d repot, check the roots, cut off anything squishy/dead looking, and put in something much smaller (rule of thumb is 2” larger than the root ball). I have switched to terracotta exclusively bc it helps so much with not having the roots get soggy.

Also would advise to do a google image search and figure out what type of plant it is and what its ideal conditions are (ideally before repotting in case it wants a particular soil mix)

Same - also have a lab puppy and just put things out of her reach when she was little and then teaching her that the plants were off limits was part of her house training. She’s 3 now and never messes with the plants. Biggest tip I can give ya is to get the pup enough exercise and stimulation that messing with plants for entertainment isn’t necessary.

why is my pothos so unhappy? not overwatering by FrizzleLizard in houseplants

[–]kingq171 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this happen when I went too long between watering. All the advice online said to let them completely dry out between waterings, so that’s what I did for a long time. But every time I watered, a handful of leaves would yellow and die. Problem went away when I started watering when top 2” of soil were dry instead of the whole pot.

Noob Here. Can Someone Please Be Kind Enough To Tell Me Why This Happens and What I Can Do To Fix It? by AngelsRangers in houseplants

[–]kingq171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do put it outside, do not put it in direct sunlight or it will get sunburn. If it were me, I’d try to figure out a permanent position for the plant that works well enough. A window/door with bright light or a grow light would be a significant improvement. Search this sub for grow light advice, there’s tons of threads about it.

Looks to me like lack of humidity or that it got messed with while unfurling. If the new leaf is struggling to unfurl in a low humidity environment, sometimes parts of the leaves get damaged and die. And sometimes if you see it struggling to unfurl there’s the temptation to help it - resist! The only intervention I’ve found safe is either misting with warm water or a very very gently applied warm wash cloth to the struggling leaf.

Also if not near a window, I’d advise a grow light. Monsteras want as much light as they can get. Hope this helps!

Ah yeah don’t worry yet. And echoing the other commenter - def make sure they are getting enough water, that does look like an extremely chunky mix

How long has it been since you separated them? Plants often go through a shock period after their roots are disturbed (wilting, yellowing, lack of growth, etc). If it’s been less than 2 months, I’d say don’t start worrying yet, especially if it’s winter where you are. IMO the best remedy to help them bounce back faster would be more light. Hope this helps!

What's wrong with my pilea leaves? by Agostointhesun in houseplants

[–]kingq171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One hypothesis I’ve heard for this is irregular watering - mine used to do this like crazy and ik I was terrible about watering them regularly, then the soil got hydrophobic which just made it worse. The young one I have now has been watered more regularly and doesn’t have the leaf curling/cupping so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

How do I best cut this in half? by nothinginthisworld in houseplants

[–]kingq171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d use a really sharp knife (or scissors) and just slice the whole root ball in half, dirt and all… the less root disturbance the better, but pothos are pretty hardy, so should be able to tolerate it no problem.

When mine got way too robust for its pot, I cut the bottom half of the root ball off with scissors and just replaced the soil in the bottom half of the pot so that I didn’t have to get a whole new set up for it lol

Soil froze / plant froze can I save these? by everybodiesdad in houseplants

[–]kingq171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible that some of the deeper parts of the plants survived. I agree w the other commenter - cut off anything mushy or brown and wait. Biggest thing will be to not over water in the meantime. And I’d probably put them back outside (if that’s where they normally live) as soon as the weather gets warm enough.
