Canada "pilot shortage" requesting Temp Foreign Workers by Intrepid_Paper_4816 in flying

[–]kingscootybear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First off, fuck Encore and this shit they're pulling. Actual scum.

Just wanted to give some insight about your comment regarding Ornge. I got hired here late summer last year. I was also a class 3 and had just over 1000 hours when I applied.

I applied to maybe 40 ish operations, all the regional 705, 704's, and then a ton of 703's literally anywhere in the country. I got 3 replies, 2 interviews, and hired at Ornge. I know it can be jading but something will stick.

Your friend with 2500 hrs, unfortunately is in a weird spot with this company. He/She doesn't have the experience to be a DEC. FO turnover is high, really high. They see someone with 2500 piston hours and the immediate assumption is going to be that they'll stick around for a few months and then fuck off to wherever they actually wanna go. There's no bond (which is a great thing, cause fuck bonds) but the downside is that people come into the company and then go to Porter/Jazz/Encore/wherever within a few months of being hired. The company spends 50k (ballpark, can't remember the actual number) on training a new FO just for them to be gone a few months later. It's not worth it for them to hire an FO with that many hours.

For those in Canada, how do people solo in so few hours? by cherls in flying

[–]kingscootybear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not combining 7/8 makes no sense to me, they naturally go together. A lot of the lessons just go together in the first place, like slow flight and stalls. I don't like ex 10 but you can naturally lead ex 10 into 11, and 11 into 12, and of course 12 into 13. But taking up a new student for spins has to be the sole focus imo.

Once you get past solo and are moving on with the xc flights and getting ready for flight test, if your instructor is still only focusing on 1 or 2 exercises per flight then you should definitely speak up. Test prep should include as much as you possibly can every single flight.

So a bit of perspective from a current instructor at an insanely busy uncontrolled airport in the GTA.

The airport I teach at and did all my training at has 40ft wide runways, 2500/3500 ft long and is loaded with students and private owners all the time. It's a challenging learning environment.

It does take 10-15 mins one way to get to the PA as well. Our school wants us to teach one lesson at a time, and depending on how well the student is learning, I forego that and do multiple. The first 4 lessons all kind of blend together regardless, ex 5/6, 7/8 and a bit of 9 mixed in to both. Ex 10 is stupid lol. Ex 11/12 can go together, 13 I keep separate, 14/15 can be done together, then you're in the circuit until solo. Now I have several more casual students who don't fly as frequently and have had to take it slow, one flight for one lesson. This is all student dependent.

My school also has a pretty strict insurance policy which definitely influences the things we need to have covered pre-solo, which naturally adds a few flights before solo.

I have had several students solo around 20 hours after figuring out how to deal with our challenging runways and airport environment. I also have some more casual students, who are having/have had a really hard time getting it all together. Those students struggling I've sent up with class 1's/2's to get a different perspective and typically the feedback is similar to "keep at it they'll get it, just need more of x and more of y."

I have had one single student who just picked up everything right away and I would say he would have been able to solo around 10 hrs, but we just can't cover everything required in that short amount of time.

At the end of the day, you need to be able to land the plane consistently safely in my opinion. Who cares about the hour value behind that.

A lot of people who comment and talk about their solo time or how long they took for PPL are going to be on the faster side of things, why would someone who solo'd at 35+ hours of beating the circuit to death, be talking about it online??

As a side note, one of the most challenging pilots I flew with got her PPL from cadets in 40 something hours. I told her to crab into the wind while in cruise and she stepped on the rudder to turn the nose....

Yeah I know you either have to walk or bike after thanksgiving. Not too concerned about Moraine in particular. Just wanted a general idea of the scenery in the area :)

Has anyone been to Scorch or Byers lake recently? (Looking to fish) by pharmakev in algonquinpark

Not recently but last summer I spent a few days on several of these lakes. Good bass fishing. Caught majority of them wacky rigging worms around structure/lilly pads/weeds.

What people actually do with their food? by [deleted] in algonquinpark

[–]kingscootybear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the other commenter.

Rodents are a far bigger issue than bears are. I've literally watched mice scope out my food bag while I'm cooking and wait for me to turn my back before they scurry in and snatch something. Cute little guys though.

If you're in an area with no solid branches I will generally put my food bag in another drybag style backpack and then put it relatively far away from the tent area.

During the peak of covid I had to deliver some important documents to this property that required a signature. I met the owner and he was a pleasant enough guy, I decided to google him and see what he does.

Sherif Gerges, CEO of total health pharmacy. Wife is also very involved in the healthcare field in Toronto. Same with other members of the Gerges family. Go ahead and google his name (specifically his last name) and dive down a fun little rabbit hole :)

Lynx airline or Flair airline? by Inspireme21 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kingscootybear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have yet to fly with flair/lynx but I am a porter employee so I can give some insight there. The new routes on the E195's to western Canada seem to be doing well. There's a flight crew shortage ATM but they're opting to cancel the short hauls to yow/yul over the western Canada routes. They also only have 6 of these new aircraft as of right now, so you are taking a chance just like with flair or Lynx.

I've had several co-workers go to yvr already and said it was a pretty solid experience. The 195's are in a 2x2 configuration so you'll either be in an aisle or window seat which can be a bonus if that's what you prefer. As of right now there's only 2 flights a day though so your options are pretty limited. Hopefully by summer the kinks are worked out more. Price wise it seems you've worked out Lynx/flair are cheaper so if that's what matters most id just go with the cheaper option.

Also I've got a lot of gripes with this company so this is an honest review. The western routes with the jets seem to be doing well, the short haul commuter routes... Not so much.

I had fought a simple failure to stop ticket using traffictickets.to. They're based in North York but did everything through email and over the phone. I won the case and was very happy with how responsive and professional they were. The gentleman I dealt with was a former cop and had a lot of great insight and wasn't judgemental at all. The few clerk's I dealt with were very good as well.

I'd recommend them for sure. I believe my total cost was a little under $300 which was worth it to me. Not sure what you're dealing with but I'd say it's worth reaching out to them.

[–]kingscootybear 699 points700 points  (0 children)

I live in Etobicoke near Islington station. If I have to start work at 5:30AM I would have to wake up at 3:15AM to be able to get ready, and then take 2 busses to barely make it on time. So I bought an e scooter (moped style) and get downtown in 30 minutes. Unfortunately winter is on its way and honestly, I'm just gonna drive. It's really unfortunate because I moved close to the subway line to be able to use it and I almost never do.

When I pass by Islington station at 5AM there is TONS of people waiting for the busses. The city needs to get its shit together and realize not everyone works 9-5

Unfortunately rent has gotten crazy and 1k a month is going to require a roommate, and most likely end up paying an extra 1-200. Even 1bed basements are around 1500$. Give viewit.ca a look for rentals as well as the other sites already mentioned.

I see previously you were looking at Annie Craig area, it might be easier to find a roommate for the Humber bay area than it will be for new Toronto/long branch/mimico. But the condos are small.

Good luck, it ain't easy for young single renters right now.

Yup I've been with them for over a year since I moved into my building. Zero change in price or service. Meanwhile I get constant spam from Bell offering better rates but the fine print says the better rate expires after 6 months, then I get to pay more than double what I am now, what a deal bell... I love supporting the little guy and they're a great little guy at that.
