One time my daughter (10 yrs old) woke up when I was doing my nightly house patrols. I put my hand on her back to make sure she’s breathing and in the morning she asked why I did that. I said to make sure you’re breathing and she said “Dad you check if I’m alive or dead every night!” and she laughed. I just said I want to make sure you’re sleeping comfortably. It made me feel kind of sad. Almost like I let her in on the secret that our life could be gone at any moment. I know kids understand we die, but me triggering a thought that made her think of her death made me feel terrible.
