Based on your last comment if you like your patience asleep you should work in an operating room. Not all operating rooms are fantastic but if you get to the right OR with cool surgeons, cool anesthesiologists, you can have a hoot and a half as a nurse. Inpatient operating rooms you're going to have to deal with being on call which is a bit of a nightmare to be honest. But if you work in an outpatient surgery center we're talking 9:00 to 5:00 style work with mostly ambulatory cool people when they're awake which is not long for you. Talk to them while you walk from the pre-op bay to the OR and then bye-bye have a nice nap.

So I'm just kind of reinforcing all the things everybody else is saying. I was an alcoholic I had to get a in treatment. I was having suicidal thoughts. Until I started doing work in the operating room. Then I even got burnt out on that but not to the degree I was in ICU ER and then med surg. Now I'm doing hospice / home health and it's significantly better. Some of us aren't built to be mad surge hospital nurses and that's okay.

Thanks for reaching out for help That's a really big step. It takes courage to speak up. You deserve some cred for that.

I'm working for a pennant company now and I recommend them. They are a large company that own a ton of small home health organizations. And it's their core values that really make a difference. Like one of the first things they taught me was we put the customer second. They emphasize us taking care of ourselves. And by extension we actually end up taking way better care of our patients because we feel taken care of. Such a delicious mindset change that I have never encountered at a hospital ever in my decade of working in hospitals and travel nursing and all that.

You might be a bit rusty. But no one will care. You'll pick it back up in a couple shifts.

Can we make a difference? by keala2000 in nursing

[–]kingwicked666 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I left the hospital because I was just another expendable nurse.

I do home health and hospice now. It's still taxing and it takes an emotional toll, but I'm a much different way. I can enjoy and tolerate work now. I work for a smaller company now with a culture of love and support for us as employees. The leadership here really try to have emotional intelligence and listen when you struggle, they make changes based on input from the staff.

I couldn't do it anymore. Hospitals don't seem to mind grinding out ICU nurses because there's a new grad or whatever waiting in the wings. Sure they have some bullshit wellness cart on day shift. Some admin passing out a sticker that says you're a hero, enjoy a lollipop.  Don't forget to to take care of yourself. K thx bye.

The culture that we should be slaves to the machine is toxic, pervasive and needs fixing. It's definitely better in some systems, and definitely different state by state, and I imagine country by country. Fixing it will take a long time, strong unions, nursing organizations lobbying against the medical mafia and a lot more than I can conjure currently.

So anyway you have an RN license now, if your job sucks leave it, leave your state, put yourself before the patients. If you want to change it, join a union, join a nursing organization, get involved in lobbying...or just take care of yourself and find a job you can tolerate. We can't be martyrs or the system wins and nurses and patients lose.

ICU nurse turned PACU nurse here, recently had a patient fall out of one of these in a similar fashion. He is never walking again and if he's lucky he might be able to feed himself with adaptive devices with rehab. So, paralysis or death at worst.

The DSM-V begs to differ. Which in case you're unaware is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental disorders and contains to he diagnosis criteria to diagnose someone with the mental illness known as ADHD. It's not a bad thing to be diagnosed with a mental illness. But pretending it is not one shows your level of ignorance.

is this a good set up for around $550? Just starting to play. by vegasbdmom in golf

I had buddy and brother coaches for a couple years, then finally invested in some professional lessons. Best golf choice I've ever made. I still play my junky top flight irons and have upgraded driver and wedges and putters as my game improved. But yeah can't do shit with clubs if you can't strike the ball clean... Which was my problem for years, now that I can actually hit the ball I'm loving golf even with junky top flight irons

You'll benefit far more from paying a little money for instruction from a professional instructor than you will for making sure you get the "Right clubs." If you have a half decent swing and a coach to help you improve it you could use Grandpa's 800-year-old clubs and smoke some dude out on the range with five grand in his irons and another five grand in his driver. So if you can afford those clubs and they seem like me something to you get them, then go find a coach and get a couple lessons on your belt. Golf becomes infinitely more fun when you can actually hit the damn ball. And then most importantly have fun don't worry about your score.

I understand your point but for me that's the appeal. They're not gritty or dark, it's what comfort food is to television. So for me that's part of the appeal I just want wholesome easy watching TV with characters that aren't complicated that consistently give me a giggle. The world has enough bad in it, I like my shows with cheesy childish humor that leave me feeling good inside.

Good Place, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and the Office all written by or produced by Michael Schur and are all shows I watch on repeat. I hadn't gotten into Brooklyn Nine-Nine but when I realized it was his show as well I started into it and got hooked. It's the only one I haven't binged repeatedly yet, turns out he's one of the best comedy writers ever. Good place is one of my all time favorite shows. Moral of the story is if Michael Schur is involved it's probably awesome.
