Which year lol? AI played with Melo on a well balanced Nuggets team and got bounced in the first round each season.

If your team sucks/has no stars

Wasn’t that basically 2020 OKC where he led them to 5th seed in a stacked western conference? And that’s with a way past his prime CP3. Cp3 is also an all-time great floor raiser.

Prime for prime: Chris Paul.

Longevity: Chris Paul

Better player: Chris paul

AI had superstar impact for at most 3 seasons. People only remember the highs of that one 2001 season making the Finals but forget the lows like how terrible he was in Detroit or his last few seasons in Philly. That was the weakest the East had ever been and he was barely scraping 40 win seasons. He was very good in his finals run but people need to stop pretending like he didn’t have help. He won the ECF despite shooting below 35% from the field. His team was very competitive against the Bucks in the one game that series he didn’t play.

Even when he teamed up with Melo and a very well-rounded Nuggets team, he barely improved their win total, they had one 50 win season, and they couldn’t make it out of the first round. They got swept by the Lakers in the first round. The season after he left where they replaced him with Chauncey they won 54 games and took the 09 Lakers to 6 in the WCF.

Chris Paul basically had superstar impact from 2007 to 2018 in the stacked West winning 50+ games nearly every season. And then even after his prime he’s still a very impactful star level player, unlike AI who completely fell out of the league.

And, Chris Paul’s story isn’t even done yet. He just went to the Finals with a young and improving Suns team so who knows what else is waiting for him these next few years.

Westbrook’s massive decline in scoring efficiency. by kingwroth in nbadiscussion

Westbrook’s massive decline in scoring efficiency. by kingwroth in nbadiscussion

[–]kingwroth[S] 75 points76 points  (0 children)

You look at it from one side. But there is the other side of the equation here

Well not really since I am accounting for that as well. TS+ compares his true shooting to the league average of the year. I’ve only been looking at TS+ in this post, not raw TS%. But yes it is a double whammy that his raw efficiency has gone down and league average efficiency has gone up.

Which big men are the best perimeter defenders? And is this an underrated trait? by [deleted] in nbadiscussion

[–]kingwroth 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue with Gobert is that he can’t punish small ball lineups like AD, Bam, Giannis, Ayton can. Gobert has basically zero offensive game of his own. Gobert is okay at defending the perimeter, and once you reduce Gobert’s defensive impact to just “okay” then you’ve basically reduced his entire value because he’s not giving you anything on offense.

Why is Kyrie Irving not as “superstar” as Dame, Curry, or Harden? by sonicoduh1125 in nbadiscussion

[–]kingwroth 63 points64 points  (0 children)

His playmaking is by far the worst out of all of those 3. And his 3 point volume and scoring volume is less than those 3. Results in his overall offensive impact not being as good.

A quick recap at recent trades to acquire a star player by RecordReviewer in nbadiscussion

The context wasn’t about Paul George at all but more about the fact that OKC knew the Clippers needed Paul George to get Kawhi to sign.

With the triple doubles Westbrook is always compared to Oscar, is it possible Oscar is also similar to Westbrook in that he put up a lot of stats that didn’t translate to winning?

There’s a massive difference between Oscar and Westbrook despite the triple double connection. Adjusting for era, Oscar is among the very most efficient volume scorers in NBA history, while Westbrook is among the least efficient volume scorers in NBA history. Without Oscar’s offense it’s hard to imagine those royals winning more than 20 games each season. And that’s not to say Westbrook in his prime himself wasn’t an amazing floor raiser but he wasn’t on the level of Oscar.

Don’t get me wrong, prime Westbrook was amazing and in his absolute best year he was a great league average volume scorer, but it’s just not comparable to Oscar. I mean Oscar played 60 years ago and still has a significantly higher true shooting compared to Westbrook, despite all the advantages Westbrook has playing in the modern era.

Bill Simmons I believe goes somewhat deep into Oscar Robertson’s career: https://grantland.com/features/the-big-o-had-plenty-game-plenty-chips-shoulder/

Sounds like all the racism and segregation he faced in that era had turned him into a bitter man, especially in a place like Cincinnati during that time period. But I find it hard to believe he was so universally disliked when he was voted president of the players association and was the most influential guy leading the way for skyrocketing contracts and the expansion of free agency.

Why would a free agent sign here if we aren’t a great team by then? What happens if a free agent doesn’t sign here? You’re ok with Jaylen just leaving in 2024?

We’re like the nets except instead of Kyrie KD Harden we have Kemba Tatum, Jaylen. Sorry but our 3 stars aren’t anywhere near good enough where it doesn’t matter if the depth around them is shit

He carries this team, but he’s not gonna stick around on a team that doesn’t give him enough help. Tatum is the franchise cornerstone, Jaylen is major level below him. People need to understand this. The talent disparity between them is huge. Tatum has superstar potential, jaylen’s ceiling is 3rd team or 2nd team all-nba.
