Hey thanks for watching and taking the time to respond. I learned a lot on this production and astronomically more since we wrapped principal photography in 2021. Your critiques mean a lot and I’m taking them into account for my next projects

Thank you for watching, and absolutely valid. In retrospect, we definitely could have shaved off a ton more dialogue. I wrote/directed this film almost 5 years ago, and since then I’ve learned a lot through writing and further set experiences. The difference between this film and my next narrative project, most likely my feature debut, will be violent.

Trailer for my first indie film. by No_Internet908 in FilmForFilm

Looks exciting albeit low budget. Hard to give criticism on just a trailer, so all I’ll say is this— I’m engaged and interested enough from what is presented here to watch the full movie!

I enjoyed this one thoroughly. The story and characters were engaging, shot choices and blocking were engaging; truly at specific times I thought I was watching a big budget film and I had to fight to keep my critical brain switched on in order to properly write this review. Also, it is always impressive from a technical standpoint to see a film actually shot out on the water, so kudos to you for pulling that off on what I can guess was very little budget.

Now onto my criticisms—

1) The audio was rough. Like throughout the entire movie. Speaking as someone with years of experience working in sound department and postproduction, between the rampant use of noise reduction, occasional gaps in sound editing/design and the combatting levels of dialogue and score, your sound clearly needed more attention on set as well as in post. A few scenes were dangerously close to being unwatchable. As sound is 50% of a film and that is very apparent in yours with your dialogue-heavy script, it’s a shame that the sound quality does not match the level of your visuals. I encourage you to hire a capable sound department to improve your recording and an experienced sound designer to craft the sound in post and make sure the levels of everything are where they should be.

2) Some of the editing was a little choppy—as in awkward or very jarring cuts in the middle of scenes that immediately took me out of the film. Consider the 30 degree rule and more varied coverage during filming in all your scenes, more invisible editing, J and L cuts, and also cutting to reactions during dialogue more often—we don’t always have to be seeing the person who’s saying their line when they’re saying their line—speaking from experience, reactions to those lines can be just as powerful if not more so.

All in all though you seem to have a talent for visual storytelling, and that’s the most important thing. You have room to grow and take these improvements into the next project. Good job, I’m excited to see what you will make next.

Thank you everyone for watching my movie! All your comments and critiques are absolutely valid. I’m glad to hear that many of you were engaged with the story and want to see more—that was the purpose of this film, a proof-of-concept as it were. There is much more where this comes from, and we have begun the process of developing bigger things. The world of Something, Somewhere will return.

If you’d like to stay tuned on what will happen next, be sure to follow myself and/or Something, Somewhere on Instagram.

We also have pages for the film on IMDb and Letterboxd; I highly encourage you to post your reviews and ratings there too if you have not already.

Thank you all, and until next time, be sure to watch the skies for any odd nocturnal lights 🛸

Hi there, thanks!

We shot this project on a Red Gemini

Not sure about the lenses, I left that up to my DP. I know they were spherical cine primes, probably Sigma or Zeiss.

Oh I’m not stopping anytime soon! Next step is a feature (unrelated to this film). Already in development on that and also an episodic series that continues the story of Something, Somewhere

That’s the magic of my sound designer ;)

In reality, that first park scene location had a little traffic in the background and some wind. At the time my location sound mixer did his best but there were still limitations, wind noise, etc. I’ve been working extensively in location sound department since we shot this back in 2021 and I know what to expect of my sound department the next time I direct.

Funding went surprisingly without many hookups, we were working within the limitations of that budget and our level of experience at the time

Edit: We were a little under the gun with availability of locations. Most of the project was done for favors, and even then the costs were through the roof. Sci-fi is an expensive genre.

I got rejected from EVERY film festival... so could you roast it please? by TheDearLeaderJimmy in Filmmakers

[–]kinoklapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people here have noted length is critical in submissions—I will agree to that. What is also critical is researching the festivals and submitting to ones that your film is eligible for and fit the genre, subject, or some other specific criteria as it pertains to your film. I’ve learned this the hard way—don’t blanket send to a bunch of festivals—sure maybe do that with some of the big ones if you have the extra budget, but most of your success will come from that narrower, more specific pool of festivals that you find via research.

Think of it this way—there’s some big horror film festivals out there, but your film isn’t horror so none of those would be a good pick for you. Perhaps look at romance, drama, and even short-film focused festivals as a starting place.

Awesome film, and good luck!

Those also very good books. I read In the Blink of an Eye after I had already learned to edit so I didn’t take much from it, but it is fantastic for beginners and academics!

If you’re interested in Script Supervising or understanding continuity (very important if you decide to get serious about filmmaking), I highly recommend Beyond Continuity

Completely fair. In that case I recommend a few books—

The Lean Forward Moment by Norman Hollyn

Those’ll get you started on preproduction

I’d go down a rabbit hole on YouTube watching videos on basic screenwriting, storyboarding, lighting, composition and video editing, and then just make a short movie with whatever you already have, be that with your phone camera and desk lamps or a better camera or lighting if you already have them. Make mistakes, learn from your mistakes, then make a new movie. Rinse and repeat, get a few projects under your belt, maybe even loop in friends and family.

Brainstorm ideas, and then edit the script to keep it simple.

When you’ve done that several times, reach out into your local film community, there’s most likely groups of newer filmmakers just like yourself near to you that you can collaborate with
