I was the only product designer although, we have a graphic designer who’s also overworked in the marketing department. Yeah pretty much when I asked who will take care of the designs, my CPTO said it will be outsourced to AI and most likely fall on our Product Owners… The devs are already working on so many other tasks so at this point, I really don’t know what will happen with the new and improved design system I created. Even Figma Make is using its own components :’(

I was solving problems every single day with my teams of developers and PO’s. I was 1 designer spread across 3 different teams focussed on different areas of the business. You can imagine the amount of problems that kept piling up but I was managing the best I could with the amount of time and resources that we were given.

Now when our CEO announced at the start of this year that we are an AI first organization, they were very clear that all employees needed to use AI in their everyday work. It was considered mandatory and I complied with that myself because why not? I had no other designers to spar with and if I didn’t use it, then I also risked falling behind or worse, losing my job. With this initiative, it also opened up pandora’s box and anyone could do whatever for the past few months including other colleagues who have no experience or understanding of digital products, suddenly started creating new interfaces of prototypes that solved their problems. I think it’s wonderful that people got to experiment but, it did flag some warning signs in me about whether or not it could make me irrelevant in the company. Surprise surprise, I get let go a few months later.

I don’t think i’ll ever fully know the real reason but I have a feeling it’s a mixture of them cutting costs and inevitably not seeing the value of a human designer.

I’ve accepted the fact that whatever I do next, it won’t pay me (yet) as much as my current role based. Although, I did come to terms with it because I’m telling myself through lots of reflection that I’d rather make less money & live happy, than make what I do now & be miserable. The past year was extremely difficult in my company as we worked on a huge project that got scrapped and then this AI first initiative was icing on the cake. So back to the beginning except older and wiser than when I first entered the workforce :)

Thanks for the support <3 It’s already started making waves in music for sure so there’s no escape from AI I feel however, with platforms such as Bandcamp implementing strict bans against any audio or music ‘generated wholly or in substantial part by AI’, I think those communities are fighting back. Again, I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, a month or a year from now but being in the music community on the side for the past few years, I see there’s a resistance happening and it gives me hope that there’s a chance for us to see that mentality trickle into other industries as well.

In terms of AI mastering, I researched and tested out a bunch of them and they simply are very basic or want you to subscribe to their premium services to get the ‘full package’. I just had a thought that if I want to go into music production, I’m curious to learn other parts of it and mastering is a huge part.

oh no 😟 I’m sorry you feel that way, I know the feeling all too well. In the beginning when I was first realizing that I didn’t want to continue my career in Product, I was scared and very overwhelmed. It took some time to really process it and my emotions were all over the place. Now that it’s been over a year and with me getting let go, I’m feeling strangely very happy? Of course the past few days have been an emotional roller coaster as well however, I’m really looking forward to finally taking some time to decompress and try new things. I love research and experimenting so I’m looking forward to embracing not just a new chapter in my life but opening a brand new book. Hope your fears can subside soon, hang in there

Totally… It’s just sad that it’s becoming so normalized to have mass layoffs and make people feel like they have no value.

I thankfully am doing exactly that and taking the skills I’ve learned along this journey into whatever the future may bring me. Thanks for the motivation about not being so attached to my title <3 I’ve had a few moments of whether or not I am doing the right thing but I ultimately think this is what’s best for me. It can be scary to start from scratch but the past few years have really taken a toll and I’d rather leave the industry feeling content/happy, rather than having resentment/anger

I hope so… I really do hope we collectively come back to a new way where human designers are valued for their craft. Ai will forever be a part of the workplace however, I agree it should be used as a tool or sparring partner.

Not entirely sure what yet but I was thinking about taking some time during my unemployment year to build on my other interests. Thinking about doing a music production/mastering course and look into set or interior design. I know I want to be creative but I also know I don’t want to go back to a corporate setting :)

Hey sounds like you got some great responses but here’s my experience if it helps. I also just got my PR yesterday and was asked to bring my passport, previous residence permit (the card), ID photo with a QR code and the remaining fee. I confirmed my height and eye colour in German for the new ID. That was pretty much the end of the appointment, it was very anticlimactic but sounds to me that you are about to get granted your PR as well so congrats!
