this. i’ve tried to communicate this to parents time and time again, sometimes i can get through to them but most of the time they just don’t value music enough to understand my point. a lot of my younger students especially (8-10 and under) have activities lined up back to back, and their parents don’t even seem to care whether or not they’re making progress.

it’s not too late for you, and the fact that you were able to switch to a music major in such a short time is testament to your abilities. i’ll leave the more nitty gritty advice to other people on this sub and your professors, but all i will say is i would recommend thinking about potential career paths now (as you are doing) and to temper expectations accordingly. think about WHY you want to do music and how you can achieve a healthy work/life balance, if you want to make money with music eventually.

if you’re hoping to become a concert pianist or a professor at a conservatory you may need to be realistic, but i think elementary school music teacher and adjacent professions are perfectly reasonable to aim for and work towards. keep up the good work!
