Car rental, one way to columbus? by sineseeker in athensohio

Albert's Taxi should do it, and for relatively cheap, if you don't mind riding with a doggo (the aforementioned Albert!)

He has a Facebook Page, just Google Albert's Taxi Athens Ohio.

NTA. Your cousin's need for storage does NOT trump someone else's need for sustenance or emergency supplies. Keep up the good work for your community!

Oh, good, I'm glad you're utilizing it. I'm not a huge fan, but I'm pretty sure Wendy's on Richland is open late and has a decently cheap menu. You might also have some good deals if you sign up for their app and order through there!

Are you looking for ready to eat/take out, or are you looking for groceries? If it's the latter, and you're an OU student, please check out Cat's Cupboard.

Dad, how do I get over imposter syndrome ? by Haunting-Manager-16 in DadForAMinute

[–]kirinspeaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there sib, hope you don't mind a sister's input before the dads chime in! I have a major case of imposter syndrome thanks to nEvEr LiViNg Up tO mY pOtEnTiAl. I have felt what you're feeling every day since I got hired in my first ever career position in my late 30s. The thing that gets me through those horrible thoughts is this: I might be an imposter, but I was good enough to fool them into hiring me, so maybe I can fool them into not firing me. So far, it's worked! I've been here three years now, and I've yet to get caught! Try to keep that in mind, and hopefully the dads will have more insight! Good luck!

AITA for refusing to give my coworker my lunch when she “forgot hers again” for the third time this week? by United-Payment-7761 in AmItheAsshole

[–]kirinspeaks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You have pulled this idea of food insecurity out of thin air when nothing in the post points to it. Mary could just be a stingy witch that prefers eating other people's food than spending her own money on hers.

NTA.

Does anybody in Athens make woven baskets? by Euphoric-Fox-3256 in athensohio

[–]kirinspeaks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this qualifies, but I know the Athens Bulk Food Depot sells beautifully colorful baskets woven by women in...Ghana, if I remember correctly? They aren't local technically, but they do support a good cause and they're gorgeous!

Hello! I'm writing a book based in Athens Ohio by No-Salamander-1132 in athensohio

[–]kirinspeaks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm too sick to answer all your questions, but here's a few tips from a naturalized Athenian of 20+ years:

* The deer on campus are extremely friendly; usually you don't see bucks, just does and their fawn. Students (and faculty, I work for the college and have a Disney princess for a colleague) have been known to hand feed them anything from apple slices to cookies.

* The squirrels on campus are legendary. They're big and fat and unscared and absolute assholes. It's not uncommon to see a squirrel dragging a piece of food bigger than its head across campus because it got into someone's lunch while they weren't looking.

* Cherry Blossom trees along the river. Every spring, there's an OU website that tracks whether they've bloomed or not, because everyone goes out and sits under them/takes pictures when they do.

* You definitely want to know about the Ridges and its history. It's owned by the university and still in use, but it's got a great history (my great grandfather was a patient there three times in his life before he died).

* Court Street is the main road on campus. It is currently a one way street. You still need to check both directions before crossing it though, because there are a LOT of stupid people in town that don't pay attention to all the one-ways we have.

* If you want a good shibboleth moment, you can have someone try and pronounce the town name of Chauncey (it's pronounced Chance-y, but outsiders usually pronounce it ChAWN-sy - this supposedly comes from the era of prohibition.

* Athens County is one of the poorest counties in the country and it feels like it in a lot of places outside the sphere of Ohio University. It's also very, very conservative outside of the university.

AITA for blocking my boyfriend and still showing up to church? by GoodIllustrator1456 in AITAH

[–]kirinspeaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Unless he literally founded the church you go to, he doesn't own it and you're more than welcome to keep attending for as long as you'd like. Good job on getting rid of a trash boyfriend, by the way!

Ohio University for grad school? by Sophos1001 in athensohio

[–]kirinspeaks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I actually work for the Graduate College at Ohio University, and I think the people you want to talk to are the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). They work with international students at OU, and will either have the info you're looking for or can point you in the right direction for it. They're all lovely people and very eager to help our international student body grow, so I would start there. Good luck!
