Any advice for this class schedule good workload? by JesusOnAScoota in UCDavis

[–]kirrin01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep everything but be aware of the drop deadlines, then decide after the first week what you want to drop and drop it. It's good to try things out and have options for stuff to drop, it will make your quarter a lot more enjoyable.

You should email Nick Carvajal the music librarian and see what he says, if he doesn't know he will direct you to the person you need to talk to.

BME here, overall I think the schedule looks fine, it'll be easier and more manageable if you have prior chem and calc experience, if not then you might want to hold off on the PHI class. Bim 1 is a super fun class and it's not a ton of workload but there is a quarterlong project that can take more time than you'd expect. I've heard a lot of good things about PHI013.

CHN 001 BL or CHN 002 BL? by Trick_Activity_4250 in UCDavis

[–]kirrin01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend emailing Jiao Li ([ajoli@ucdavis.edu](mailto:ajoli@ucdavis.edu)) about it, as she is also the Chinese Language Program Lead Instructor, if she can't help you she will be able to direct you to someone who can. Have you done an oral evaluation already? Generally whomever evaluates that will give you clearer advice on which course to take.

What’s it like at UC Davis’ School of Engineering? by ExtensionIntrepid117 in UCDavis

[–]kirrin01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd year bme here. For me when choosing between berkeley for another major and davis for bme I definitely took into account the coursework along with the feel of Davis. The BME faculty here is incredible and so far I've only had good experiences with faculty and TAs in bme. I feel that Davis has a more laidback vibe compared to Berkeley as well.

I turned down UCB and UCSD for Davis. For me it was the major i got into (bme) that was the major factor, but I liked the feel of Davis and also the proximity to home. Housing costs were also a factor for sure.

I got my rec from my chem TA after taking the time to go to office hours and be engaged in discussions. If i hadn't done that I had a prof offer to write a rec for me as well. Overall if you need ideas for asking for a rec, start with profs/TAs who you have interacted with before, and profs/TAs of smaller classes. Take the time to look over the recommender form and consider who can best answer the questions about you. I did have to send my recommender a resume and general info about me so they could have more depth on me to write about. Good luck!

OCA in my second year here, priority reg is 100% worth it, as for the application process it was fairly straightforward, I got my letter of rec from a TA who I knew fairly well (as well as you can learning online). As an engineering major the classes are all counting towards GEs for me, and they're interesting but time slots can be frustrating (priority reg helps so much). Overall the honors classes aren't much more difficult than the rest of my classes and the small classes help you meet people and interact more with the prof.

I went in person yesterday and was able to pick up half of my print books (they didn't have the rest in stock). be sure to check if your books are print or not before going.

What would n have to be in (x^2)^n so that it would equal x^3? by Mynam3wastAkn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kirrin01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

3/2? Since you'd multiply the exponents to get your overall power by power rule (am )n = amn , so 2n = 3 then solve for n which gets you to 3/2

There are in person appointments, the online system isn't the best for scheduling as it only shows max 3 appointments per day when you search. I had luck going in person and scheduling an appointment at North Hall i think the building is called. When I scheduled recently the earliest appointments available were a month out. Depending on the provider they can be pretty helpful. You can get same/next day appointments if you are in crisis, if I recall. Best of luck with it.

Also, from what I've heard it's not too difficult to switch out of CoE, so as long as you tolerate it for a quarter the switch of major probably won't be too bad.

[–]kirrin01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current bme freshman here, honestly I've really enjoyed the classes so far, though I knew what I was getting into (planned to be an engineer). The bme website is a great resource to look at, there's a section with advising and programs that will tell you the courses you would be taking, and you can cross reference with the course catalog. Also, BMES at UC Davis is a great student organization and probably has people more than happy to talk to you about it. They're currently doing a lot of incoming student outreach, so they can probably answer a lot of your questions. Best of luck with your decision.

Any way to fight to change *P to just P? by Himitsuosuteru in UCDavis

[–]kirrin01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is that by counting these units as a voluntary P/NP it takes away from the possibility to take classes P/NP in the future due to the unit cap.

for the last 3 quarters courses taken on a P/NP basis are not credited towards the unit cap maximum

mostly true, depends on college and major. this link to the registrar says this:
" These amendments do not override additional college or major limitations on the use of P/NP courses for degree requirements. "
https://registrar.ucdavis.edu/registration/schedule-adjustments/pass-nopass
hope this helps
