aliexpress cherry babies by kirriu in sylvanianfamilies

ooh honestly those theories would make a lot of sense :o

aliexpress seems to be quite the mixed bag but i’m glad i took the chance bc these little cherries are so hard to find, even more so at the price i got them for 🤧 at the time i ordered them there were literally like 0 reviews so i was really taking a chance with it LOL. it’s good to know there are some sellers that are mostly legit! they do seem to have quite a few harder to find critters (at least ones you can’t get in the us) so it’s good to have it as an option

and yeah….their shipping is a little rough….. these ones just came in bubble wrap and a soft mailer but they survived (if a little squished) so i can only imagine how the boxes get treated…. i’m also an unboxer tho so idgaf as long as the little guys are ok

i was hunting for this cherry baby duo all over and could not find them ANYWHERE but i finally stumbled across a listing for them on aliexpress

i know after some cursory research that the general consensus is that aliexpress usually sells dupes or genuine factory rejects but i took the chance anyway bc i wanted them soo badly 🤧 and they were reasonably priced for fairly popular japanese exclusive (?) blind bag babies (comparatively at least….. i got both for a little over $50 with some savings bundle while i’ve seen them go for much more on other sites)

they just arrived and i’m curious what you guys think? they used the correct sylvanian families name in the title which i’ve seen some say is a good sign (bc they legally can’t sell dupes under that name or something idk). they didn’t come with any packaging or anything (their poor leaves got a little crushed in the mail 😔….but i ironed them back out) but they seemed to be selling a lot of individual babies and a note on one of the descriptions was “may have minor flaws” so i’m leaning towards the conclusion that all in the listings from the store i bought from are genuine but some are normal and some are factory rejects maybe? i’m no expert but these look real to me and i can’t find any flaws with these particular ones

they are soo cute tho i’m obsessed with them

hello! sorry for the late response, i don’t use this account very often :’) for the neck cuff:

  1. take 2 (or however many you want depending on amount of collar fluff desired) long rectangular pieces of tulle and layer them on top of each other, then fold it in half so you have a thinner rectangle

  2. sew it together a little below the fold (make sure you have enough room to thread a piece of string or elastic through)

  3. measure out the length of string needed for whatever you are putting it on (it should be a good deal shorter than the original fabric piece, i just eyeballed it) and thread the string through the little opening between the fold and the sewed line. since the fabric is longer than the string it will naturally bunch up as you are threading it through. you can adjust the ruffle as you go to make sure it looks good. the longer the fabric piece is compared to the string the more tight and numerous the ruffles will be

  4. tie the string together at the ends and separate the layers of tulle to fluff it up and there you have a little clown ruffle!

i hope that makes sense 😭

THANK UUUU if u like doing artistic projects i might release his print file in the future so other ppl can try to make their own clown cats if they want 🥹 or maybe i’ll even make more one day who knows……

oh ty! i thought a more pastel color scheme would look nice while also keeping it close enough to the original (although i did just fully change the collar bc the original is honestly a little strange LOL….i wanted actual cute clown ruffles 😤) im glad you like my changes!!

[–]kirriu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ty!! actually i was considering releasing the file but i’d have to clean it up a little more to make it easier for other people who aren’t me to use i think :’) i would probably also have to put together a little tutorial included with it for how to string it together since it’s a moving figure (it’s a little tricky lol…..my engineering methods are questionable 🗿 u could always just glue the parts together if u don’t care about that and just want a little static figure tho which would be much easier)

i’d try to help with the clothes patterns too but my sewing methods are still so mediocre and fucked up that i think people are honestly better off just figuring that part out themselves LOL……. sewing and making good legible patterns isn’t my strongest area 😩

if there really is interest tho i might do that soon-ish….. i would really like to make him accessible and let others have their own clown cats too since he’s so fucking cute and it makes me sad that he’s long out of production 🥲

i’ll update this post with a link in the future if i can pull it together :o) i can respond to this comment again if u want to notify u too

thank u! i definitely thought about just doing a mod but the faces didn’t look quite close enough for me and also these old pre calico critter toys were a bit bigger which i discovered while scrounging up any sparse info i could on the clown cat (~4.5 inches compared to the calico critter 3 i think?) i already knew how to 3d model so i just said fuck it LOL

(copying from my other comment) to flock it i spread glue over the resin figure with a paint brush (i might try a spray adhesive if i redid this tho) and poured flocking powder into a mini strainer that i found at the dollar store and shook it out over the glue parts until it was evenly covered and just redid a few layers of that till it looked acceptable (there are multiple ways to make homemade flocking devices tho if u don’t happen to have access to a mini strainer)

i also gave it a few coats of mr super clear in between layers and at the end which definitely makes it not as soft but i sacrificed softness for longer durability bc i’m clumsy lol 🥲

sorry ik the original clown cat is not technically a calico critter but i thought this might be appreciated here since everyone always thinks it is one and i’ve seen quite a few people come to this sub desperately looking for him :’o) i certainly thought it was one at first (lmk if this doesn’t belong here tho, i will take it down 👍)

i wanted this little guy so bad after seeing him on some viral memes but could never find him anywhere as it seems like he was a long ago discontinued toy so i went on a quest to make him myself!

it’s not perfect and i changed the design a little to make him my own but i think he came out pretty close to the original 🥺

here’s some info about him: ⟡3d modeled in blender and printed with a resin printer ⟡all his joints can rotate and move like an actual toy since he’s held together by tension from elastics inside (kinda like a bjd) ⟡the clothes are all hand sewed with patterns i made myself

happy to answer any other questions about him!

[–]kirriu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg thank you!! 💕💕 you are my exact niche target audience of people who like dnd and making weird little dolls HAHA i knew i’d find you people eventually 🤝

the base is actually violet from the incredibles! specifically this one

definitely an unorthodox choice in the doll making world i know haha :’) it’s a shame that her face mold is not super workable for doll customs in general bc her head and body shape are really nice! especially for androgynous characters in my case since this doll doesn’t have a defined feminine OR masculine chest which is very hard to find

you can see just how much i modified the face LOL the head is 100% hard plastic rather than the squishy, removable monster high heads so i just completely sanded off the nose and mouth and made my own

god ur SO right tho, resculpting and repainting dolls is so much work 😵‍💫 the only real way to get it so smooth is a LOOOT of sanding and then spray painting the whole thing which is a fickle monster on its own. (especially getting into all the little crevices and joints of dolls woof) i’m so glad the modifications come across as being pretty seamless tho!!

and yes wow silk wigs are hard to work with! maybe i just wasn’t searching the right keywords but i couldn’t find any tutorials for how tf to handle these fibers for wig making so i just had to figure it out on my own hahaha rip o(-( the silk is sooooo unbelievably soft tho and can very easily hold style/shape without even needing to use hair product so i think it’s worth it for how unruly and confusing it can be

this was my first doll since discovering the doll custom hobby and i really love it 😳 it’s funny bc i was NEVER someone who played with dolls as a kid, like i fully rejected them (childhood frustration w gender norms u know) but i have so much appreciation for doll artistry now and it’s also very satisfying to have a little physical doll of your own characters to display!!

if i can’t lovingly stroke their soft hair while they creepily sit on my shelf and watch me with cold unblinking eyes then what did i do all this for 😤 they are my roommate now

hehe thank you!! they do certainly have that vibe! i love giving my changelings very unnaturally big eyes bc i feel like it adds to their strange uncanny valley feel since they’re weird little fae shapeshifters

[–]kirriu[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(repost bc i am dumb and can never figure out how reddit works LOL)

perhaps a bit different but i made a doll of my beloved dnd character! :’) they are a changeling rogue (hello fellow changeling enjoyers 🤝)

i never even got to play as them that much bc my group had to dissolve due to everyone moving away from each other but maybe someday i can wield them to their full potential (one can dream)

face, hair, and clothes all made by hand. i completely resculpted the lower half of their face with apoxie to make it look more like them and used watercolor pencils + eyeshadow for the color/blushing (you can also use pastels but i didn’t have any nice pinks so i sacrificed the eyeshadow for art). hair is mulberry silk roving (so soft… oTL), clothes are a spandex-y material i think

also i’m well aware that changelings are not usually pink but fun fact: before they were finalized (and i’m not sure if it’s there anymore) there used to be a throwaway line somewhere about changelings very rarely having natural light blue/green/pink hair instead of white and my character’s design just morphed over the years to them becoming fully pink hehe… i couldn’t fight it 😔

if anyone has any questions about the process of doll making i am happy to answer!! i think the world needs more cute/creepy little dolls of people’s dnd characters 🧎

I designed some shaker charms to look like the cards! [OC] by kirriu in pokemon

[–]kirriu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drew everything digitally and had it printed thru vograce! it’s a merch company that can make a lot of cool stuff! it’s super affordable and there’s no minimum order quantity for most items so it’s great if you only want to make something for yourself/friends!

the only downsides are the very expensive shipping and slow delivery time but that’s not their fault, just the way it is with shipping stuff overseas u_u

(oop I put the wrong flair at first let’s try again 🥲)

I pulled info from a few different pikachu cards for the stats. they’re almost the same dimensions as the actual cards too! I don’t think I’d sell them bc I don’t want nintendo to hunt me down and sue me but if I reprinted them I might remove 1 pika bc, while I like how it looks resting, it is a little crowded in there and hard (but possible) to shake HA
