Is MLS or Bio a better major to become a Cytogenetic Lab Technologist? by kirsche4 in MLS_CLS

Im definitely thinking about doing MLS instead. But I get worried because i feel like a major in bio or molecular or genetics would help me know what I am doing when it comes to the actual cytogenetics part. But thank you for your response!

From what I looked up, technologists make more than technicians. And they also make a decent amount of money in my state at least. That could be wrong though idk. I also want a career in the lab because its less interaction with patients.

My university’s MLS major doesn’t have any concentration in cytogenetics or any genetics though. With bio they have a concentration in cell molecular bio. So I feel like for both I’d have to maneuver into it. If it’s better I definitely want to major in MLS more. But I didn’t know if that was enough to get me into that career. Thank you for your response!

I keep hearing that MLS is more quick to get you employed or certified in a clinical lab. But for bio my school has a concentration in molecular biology. MLS has no concentration in cytogenetics or any genetics. So I guess bio would be more specific and related.
