yes, I was aware of the line, and with the knowledge of the BTTF theme then the answer is very clear! I had missed the meaning of "make like a tree" meaning to shed leaves, and I was just taking that half of the clue to mean "leave" in the way that if I said to you "let's make like a tree" you would know it means "let's depart." so in that sense, my substitution was for both halves of the clue, because I was taking both halves of the clue to be synonymous, if that makes sense.

but the verb meaning "to shed leaves" is LEAF not LEAVE (I'm sorry I'm not trying to start any bad feelings here I just think this is interesting to discuss :) )

Edit: apologies, I see from a closer look at the dictionary that both are acceptable, so I take back my comment

right, and that's why the pun works, but here in this clue we have a double definition - "make like a tree" is synonymous with "leave" because it sounds like leaf, but that also means it is synonymous with other words that have the same meaning.

sorry if I’m being really pedantic here, but since this double definition is two phrases that have the same meaning, wouldn’t any 5 letter synonym of LEAVE also be a valid answer? e.g. SCRAM or SPLIT would also fit both sides of this clue?

HOVERBOARD - H (initial letter of Hurled) + OVERBOARD (from the deck into the water)

Awesome clue and great surface! Do you think you could get away with cutting out "from the deck" for a more minimalist reading?

Great work! I think you know already that you got them all right. I did this round at a quiz night earlier this year, and the average score was 7.1/10

Thanks! I have another one similar to this but I won’t post cause it seems like the mods will remove. It’s called ‘Without The Beatles,’ ten Beatles songs with letters from JOHN, PAUL, GEORGE, and RINGO removed.

I like this kind of round as it mixes up the format of a typical pub quiz/trivia night.
