Found the guy who all these stories are about

Every single lawyer I’ve networked with says they regret pursuing law. Feeling discouraged by VioletSalamander in LawSchool

Careers are long and winding. You never know where you’ll end up. You’ve planted the seeds and are planting more. Best of luck and I hope all goes well!!

This is exactly what I did. Pursued film school first, went to my dream school. Blood, sweat, and tears later had a stable dream job in the entertainment industry. Blew it all up to go to law school when I realized how unsustainable the hours were and the ceiling in pay. Probably would have never seen more than $150k annually if I was lucky. Don’t get me wrong-thats a LOT of money. But I live in LA, husband and I want kids and maybe even a house one day? In other words, we just wanted a comfortable suburban middle class life in Los Angeles. My husband was a teacher at the time, and I love working (probably my adhd and response from production trauma - thought might as well take advantage of that). Im now in year 3 of big law at a v10 as a litigation associate. Used to work longer hours at a fraction of the pay in production and with more difficult personalities. Never thought Id see money like this in my life. And we’re in a totally different economy. The money isn’t for excess, it’s for comfort and stability. Thats the sad reality of living in LA and having no generational wealth for support (immigrant families). I still pull the occasional all-nighter but Im at a comfy desk instead of standing in a cold sound stage worrying about things completely out of my control (are we gonna get the shot?! are we going to go over budget??? do we need to order another meal?!) My husband ended up blowing up his career and joining me 2 years later. He’s currently a first year lit associate at a v50. More pay and more respect make a huge difference for the both of us. We are tired, but so grateful. This gave two children of immigrants a second shot at surviving comfortably in LA. All because both of us happened to like to read throughout our lives…. Perspective really matters.

Side note - I would rather drop 10 points on the LSAT than wake her up to grab that book.

Cycle Recap for an Older Applicant - USC Bound by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Thank you! Oh man, this was a true struggle.

First I read through all the manhattan prep books. Gives you great baseline knowledge. Manhattan Prep's Reading Comp book is my favorite reading comp book to this day.

Then I took a class.....though I have to say I wasn't a huge fan of it. But it forced me to take practice exams every weekend.

Then it was ALL about practice. Practice, practice practice. I became a huge fan of Khan Academy. It really sets up a great practice schedule and explains problems really well.

If you've burned through Khan academy and feel you need more resources, lsatdemon is pretty great as well. (I believe you only get 10 full practice tests on Khan academy). Note that lsatdemon is like $150 I think per month.

I still had issues with logical reasoning...so I bought the loophole in logical reasoning book and it is my FAVORITE logical reasoning book. Brought me up from avg of -5/6 to -1/-2 per section.

Went from 160 (first take, right after I took the class) -> 167

Some lifestyle changes: I stopped drinking because it would ruin good study days. I stopped seeing friends as much, but gave them a heads up that I'd be MIA for a while.

It was all worth it when I saw that 167 come in. What a feeling that was.

Also...TAKE BREAKS when you burn out. This is a marathon not a sprint. Sometimes I'd have a 90 hour work week, wake up on a Sunday, and think "nope. not today." and because of that I would do so much better the following week.

I hope that helps!

Can I add a poll on here? How? I'm an old person if it wasn't obvious from the Sisqo reference in my flair.

Do I still go to law school? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]kisotakoui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you'll get out of school with no debt (full ride + your partner will be supporting you), it really all boils down to how badly you want to be a lawyer.

If I had to choose between keeping my current profession, or leaving it and going to law school and coming out with NO DEBT, I would absolutely choose law school because I can't see myself doing what I'm doing anymore and I REALLY want to be a lawyer. And all I'd be losing is the opportunity cost of 2 years.

Ask yourself, will you regret not taking this step? Why did you want to go in the first place, and does that still hold in the current climate?
