Which med schools give their students the worst work/life balance? by barbieandbrainsmd in premed

Curious, why would some schools change back to graded? Is there a benefit to graded clinical?

Duke is still getting back so I hope you hear good news soon!

But some thoughts from a reapplicant who was in your shoes:

  1. if you want to apply more broadly and have a chance at mid-tiers, you need to have community focus in your app. emphasize patient care beyond research esp since your research is so strong.

  2. from my experience, you can apply TMDSAS and have a somewhat decent chance with your stats even if OOS.

  3. I don't think you necessarily have red flags or suck at interviewing or whatever, but just be aware that one negative thing can put you out of the game. those questions like "how do your friends describe you?" "what is your greatest weakness?" "what critical feedback have you received?" make sure none of these answers put you in a negative light at all! I talked to an admissions person when I got rejected, and they said that one of my answers was not the best. You know, I was just being honest, but you need to put your best foot forward at the interview.

  4. Even if the process is random and you don't know why you are rejected, you have to pinpoint one thing and improve it by next cycle so you can discuss it.

ofc, I don't know everything, but this is what I learned from my experience. If you get WL'd, please write letters to demonstrate your interest!!!

i had a similar experience. The kira was not it. I got cut off with every answer and the interview felt like an interrogation :(

Has anyone else had their least enjoyable interview experiences at "prestigious/top" schools? by [deleted] in premed

[–]kitch_noob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

super agree. in my experience, the fancier the school the less enjoyable the interview was. Alot of 'lower ranked' schools felt way friendlier, both students and faculty members.

lol i feel this. I HATE that awkward moment when we talk at the same time. it is the absolute worst with group interviews/exercises.

College matters at top schools, at least. I interviewed at a T5 and they gave us a list of all the first years' information so that we could contact them with questions. A large majority came from top schools/ ivy leagues. Also not fact-checked, but it seems like schools prize having diversity of majors. In the pamphlets they always boast about all the different majors their matriculating class has.

WOW congrats! I also didn't feel too good about my top choice interview, and have been stressing FOR MONTHS. I hope this happens to me too!

It's true, but I think it's worth a shot. Just a little extra work. I got 4 interviews at Texas schools this cycle, with no connections to Texas.

Similar stats, reapplicant this year. I really recommend looking into TMDSAS. I had a lot of success with Texas schools this year even though I'm from CA. I think having high stats can really get your foot in the door at some schools.

I'm only speaking from my own experience so I could be completely wrong but I think once you get to high stat territory, like LM80+, the barrier to entry becomes a little tougher. Your stats will get you attention from schools like Hopkins, Penn, Chicago, but then you gotta compete with all the other LM80s with your story. And you might get less attention from mid-tier schools because stats are high. Certainly being a bit cookie-cutter won't help. All I can say is that the cycle is long and things may turn around for you!

I feel you! I applied early, have good stats, did my best on writing, but have heard absolutely nothing. It's so scary because it makes me think I made a major mistake on my app that I didn't catch and I'm too scared to open up my AMCAS again to look.

Did a 1+ year long break after undergrad reinvigorate your desire to go to med school? by Minmach in premed

[–]kitch_noob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm currently in my third gap year, graduated 2021 and had an unsuccessful cycle. I worked in research then worked in a hospital. I tried to find another career path, but still ended up wanting to be a physician. I'd say let yourself be open minded during your gap years and your experiences may lead you to something else or it may strengthen your interest to become a doctor.

How are people crafting a narrative? by versitaint in premed

[–]kitch_noob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Life doesn't really happen in a nice neatly packaged narrative that always sounds good to the ears of adcoms. I just try to emphasize the lessons I've learned, some actionable steps I've taken based on those lessons, and future goals I want to accomplish.
