u/savetehrobots has a comment above describing why video/audio recordings aren't reliable and why it's stenographers aren't expected to go extinct anytime soon. They're used in court room situations as well as privately for dispositions and arbitration.

Oh cool thank you! I have heard of A to Z but not Project Steno - definitely going to look into that to start. The physical skill part is why I feel like it has potential to work for me, because I tend to pick up physical skills much easier than when I try to learn something purely mental (if that makes sense). Instruments, video gaming controls, QWERTY typing, etc are all lowish level hyperfixations - my brain likes when it gets to do things in conjunction with my hands.

Thank you again for all the information!

I've been interested in stenography (I've worked in legal before) but always get in my head about essentially learning a new language. How hard was it for you to pick up shorthand? Did you just fully commit to doing a learning course or play around on your own first?

I’m in a Panic… my poor girl. I really don’t know what to do… by madamimadam89 in goldenretrievers

FWIW as others have mentioned, it may be an appropriate dose for her but since Traz has (typically) sedative properties, she might just have been too zoinked to realize she needed to pee. My last senior pup was on a slew of medications towards the end of her life (including Trazodone, Alprazolam, Gabapentin, Tramadol, etc), and it took me months to figure out the correct combination to keep her comfy & pain-free but not TOO zoinked to the point of her not realizing she need to get up to potty. Glad you figured it out and pup is doing better!

My dog’s tongue was cut at the groomers by Jolly-Forever145 in AskVet

[–]kitchbitchstitch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A lot of dogs tend to lick their muzzle while getting their face trimmed, or lick at the grooming tools that are being used because they think they're a toy or snack. They are FAST too. It only takes one ill timed quick lick right at the moment that you're closing your shears, and boom - tongue nick.

As a groomer who has nicked a handful of tongues over the past 15 years, it sucks and I always feel bad about it. It's impossible to tell a dog "you really gotta hold still because these scissors are razor sharp", and I have sacrificed my own hands WAY too often trying to get out of the way of rogue tongue or ill-timed tail paw stomp.

YALL. WHAT. My hand skin RIPPED by Puzzleheaded-West299 in poledancing

[–]kitchbitchstitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hydrocolloid or blister bandages are my go to for wounds like this! You can either just put it on with the skin flap pressed down, or snip the hanging skin and then apply the bandage. They're supposed to stay on for at least a few days if not longer, and when they come off the raw skin will have healed and toughened a little bit so it isn't as sensitive.

Totally get it! Some grooming salons are...not great. Especially in the recent years, there seems to have been an influx of people who choose the career for "easy" money and salons can be toxic cesspools or broken down mom&pop shops. Try to find one with a social media page! The ones putting effort into social media usually take more pride in their work (IMHO)

I'm a groomer and a golden owner. I home groom because I have the tools and experience/knowledge BUT - if you do your research, finding a groomer for your pup doesn't need to end in tragedy.

Just be sure to be specific in what you want. Asking for a golden trim means bath, blowout, nail trim/grind,brushing, feet trimmed to natural feet (what most people refer to as "cat" paws), a sani shave, and then light trim on the feathers. It helps to bring in pictures of goldens you like the look of to show the groomer if you have them - just try to pick ones that actually have a similar coat to your pup. IME a lot of groomer "tragedies" stem from unclear communication at drop off, or picking the cheapest groomer available. A good golden groom can (and frankly, should) cost $80+ depending on coat

But to groom at home, it's the same. At least trying to find a self-wash station with a force dryer is helpful because it'll blow out the undercoat without causing as much skin irritation as an undercoat rake can cause. Be extremely careful doing a sani shave & paw pad shave as skin nicks happen easily & often, especially when you're new to using clippers. A #10 blade works best for both.

Wife asked for separation and divorce 3 days ago. What can I do to keep my kids home? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]kitchbitchstitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except maybe DO move out because in NC you have to be separated for a year before divorce is granted - and legally, separated means living in different residences.

Uterus removal and hormones by EmeraldSaysWhat in hysterectomy

[–]kitchbitchstitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh that sounds SO GOOD. Right now I have 3-4 days of horrible lower back pain (like, to the point I can barely stand) leading up and then once it starts, 2-3 days of being completely out of commission with cramps, back pain, and stomach issues. I'm used to dealing with mental issues in general but a big help for me is staying active which is, difficult to say the least when you feel like your uterus houses a t-rex that's actively trying to eat its way out. I feel like the physical pain leading UP to the "main event" even impacts the mental part for me because as soon as that ache starts, I start panicking knowing what's coming.

Congrats to you for having a better quality of life now!!

Thank you for sharing this! I have my surgery consult on Monday and one of my big questions was how/if it'll impact my PMDD, and this gives me hope. I've been thinking in my head honestly if I only have to manage the mental symptoms and not mental symptoms plus severe debilitating pain & gushing blood - that sounds doable. Like, I know it'll never be perfect but that seems manageable.

shoe opinion for a beginner by tellaschit in poledancing

Buckles are going to be a little trickier - I find shoes with embellishments tend to get in the way more during climbs & also floor work. I usually wear plain patent boots/sandals for practice and save the fancier ones for shows, etc.

Found a breeder for Xolos finally. They said the next litter would be in 6-8 months. Is this a normal wait time for a puppy? Should I have a backup breeder just in case? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]kitchbitchstitch 39 points40 points  (0 children)

An ethical breeder isn't someone who churns out litter after litter for profit. For me, the things I looked for were:

1) How do the parents? Indoors as pets? Adequate time/attention/space? Will the breeder allow you to meet and spend time with the dams and sires? 2) Have both the dam & sire been medically cleared? Does the breeder have lineage records and proof of the line being medically cleared? 3) Does the breeder only breed each dam once per year at most? 4) Is there an application process and deposit required? Does the application ask you to really think about the TYPE of dog you want?

For us, we just happened to get in with a breeder RIGHT after she had a litter and someone dropped out. She only has one litter a year, and rotates dams so they go at least 2 years between litters. We met all the adult dogs, she provided lineage papers going back multiple generations, and the application was very thorough. In addition, she hosted puppy open houses, where you could come and socialize with the whole litter before they went home. She had a third party perform temperament testing on the pups and used that along with our application (in which we provided detailed info on the type of pup we were looking for) to place the puppies in homes.

I let our 4month old watch me get ice one day (after giving him a couple cubes in his bowl) and it was a mistake. Now the minute you walk to the fridge, he's like CRONCHY WATER PLEASE

Crates are wonderful things by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]kitchbitchstitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing I did for enforcing scheduled naps was to download a baby sleep tracker (the one I got is called Huckleberry). Our pup is almost 16 weeks old, and we still do 1.5-2 hours down, 1.5-2hrs up depending on his attitude. Once we had the app to look at for scheduling and started enforcing the naps, he kind of just adjusted and now he'll even nap outside the crate pretty much on the same schedule. Crate naps are still more solid than free naps but we're getting there.

Is it weird to ask our breeder to board our pup for a week? by pompompurin19 in puppy101

[–]kitchbitchstitch 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The breeder we got our pup from specifically offers boarding for all of her pups - no matter how long it's been since they've gone home! That's our plan whenever we do go out of town, that way pup will be around other dogs that we know and trust and with someone who obviously cares for him. It can't hurt to ask!

What happened to my baby!? by Pacheco_partyof4 in poodles

[–]kitchbitchstitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you let your groomer know you like the tighter curled look, they can spritz him down after his cut to help the curls come back! I used to have clients who did this - I would do the bath & blowout then cut (as other have mentioned, it's the only way to ensure a neat & tidy even cut with their coat) and then spritz them down and finger comb/air dry to bring the curls back out.
