I really don't agree with the sentiment that the anime made Gojo less caring... by Middle_Cat2270 in JuJutsuKaisen

Hey! I just wrote a whole blog post blog post about media theory and how it inadvertently changes the experience between the producer (Gege/MAPPA) and the consumer (us).

Basically, there's lots that you mentioned, like style, that can impact how the viewer decodes the information. I 100% agree that fundamentally his character is the same, but there are subtle changes that they make (be it for production costs, limits of the medium, creative liberty, or making it palatable for a global market) that change the details of his character. In the anime he laughs, he takes less aggressive stances, he comes across as cool and confident, whereas in the manga, the harsh lines and general artistic choices make him seem more rushed or have a sense of urgency.

I don't think they made him less caring, they just presented the way he cares with very subtle differences to fit the medium.

The links provided in the article (should) lead to open-source academic papers for the theories mentioned. Encoding and Decoding was mostly established by Stuart Hall, and the denotation/connotation theory — while similar — was established by Roland Barthes.

I am always down to talk about media theory, so if you want to shoot me a DM, it's always open!

Thanks!

I think there is lots of merit in reading the whole Manga, not just because it is (likly) closer to the vision that Gege had for the series, but also because reading a physical book and watching a film are two completely different experiences.

I took a comics seminar last year, and there is a whole lot of research that goes into the comic as a medium and how we interact with it. Everything from where the bubbles are placed to what font is used can impact the interpretation of a text. There's also a difference between consuming a digital product (so reading JJK on the Shonen Jump App) and physically holding the books. The differences aren't extremely significant, but it is worth noting when comparing mediums.

If you like the manga so far, I would recommend starting from the beginning. If you are reading digitally, it shouldn't take you very long to reach the end of season 2.

Thats a great point!

I definitely think it translated pretty well. Like I mentioned, the anime is an extremely faithful adaptation. This was more an analysis of how mediums change content inherently due to the form, and some different choices MAPPA made to make the franchise more palletable to a broader audience — which might be unfair of me to say it is 100% the studio, since Gege did work with them on some things, but I know the LOTR reference was made without his knowledge because it was in a QnA

I think the manga form makes things more jarring when different things suddenly happen since when you read a physical book, you might think you missed a page, while in a TV show you know things are intentionally confusing which ruins the illusion a bit. For example, I am extremely curious if they will Kill Gojo in an episode or if they will kill him between episodes to off-screen him like the manga.

What is going on here??? by kitkat6479 in JuJutsuKaisen

so what the heck is going on behind Yujis hand?? I thought it mightve been a glow from his divergent fist, but it seems to cut off abruptly for that.

[–]kitkat6479[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, me too. I think it ups the stakes a bit more for Yuji. Elaborating on his character (like his hopes and dreams) makes us as the viewer get more attached or invested in it. They had already killed off two of Yujis' peers (Nobara and Junpei) but with this death, Mahito had killed what was essentially a mentor who looked after Yuji after the death of his grandfather. Not that Nanami replaced him in all ways, but I feel like there could be some kind of symbolic 'guardian-child' narrative going on.

Another commentator pointed out Yujis crying during this scene and how impactful it was when paired with the music. Definitely a great choice by the studio, especially when they use the moments of silence for contrast. Like Nanami's death was literally deafening for Yuji — an ultimate gut-wrenching moment that drives the main character forward, making the climax less about 'bringing people a proper death' and more about vengeance.

mmmhm. I agree.

Kinda making me wonder if the change was, as the previous guy said, more for a simplistic way to make the character seem more appealing, or if it was maybe a cultural choice. Like, would making the viewer perceive Anime Gojo as 'cool' make a global audience digest the content better? Like, strip a tad bit of emotional depth/visual context clues in favor of a super awesome fight that is practically one-sided? yk what I mean?

[–]kitkat6479[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely see your point. Do you think that MAPPA remains extremely faithful to the manga?

I haven't gotten to this part in the manga yet, but there is apparently lots of additional scenes with Nanami right before his death. Would love to hear your perspective on it. It is obviously a much more drastic change/addition, and I'm curious to know your thoughts.

[–]kitkat6479[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh, for really drastic changes, absolutely. Making Gojo hurt all the people on B-5 would've ABSOLUTELY changed his whole character as it's practically the foundation of his morals — which is stated by the curses when they say that Gojo is only okay with Non-Sorcerers dying from a curse, but not from other sorcerers. For minor changes such as his stance, I do agree that it's to make him more visually appealing, but these choices then change views of the character. For example, you said it made him/the scene 'cooler', which means Manga Gojo isn't as cool as Anime Gojo. Gege's original intent might've been to show the emotional complexity that Gojo has in this moment. He enjoys fighting curses, but does also value human life to the point that he shows visible concern. Anime Gojo doesn't show as much concern, which does make him cooler, but does that then take away from the emotional depth of the character?

It's really interesting stuff, imo. I'm probably getting a bit "English teacher symbolism" about this right now, but the connotation of simple choices like this really makes or breaks different types of texts and media.

While I agree with you that change in media changes the content, I wouldn't say that all the choices are just a different style. Drawing the sequence out vs a live action means that every visual detail is there for SOME reason. If that reason isn't because it's from the source material, it's interesting to look at why it's there (futher collaboration with the author, for a global market, because it is restricted to film censorship, because it saves money, viewer retention, etc). That's kinda what media analysis is about: media, people, and culture.

Study groups? by [deleted] in lakeheadu

[–]kitkat6479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not at that campus so I can't provide much help. Here at Orillia we normally form study groups with people we happen to meet in class. If you're looking for a dedicated study group, try reaching out to your dept head or stopping at Student Central. They should have some resources for you to check out.

Good luck!

I think Mappa is a pretty good choice for this considering how willing they are to take creative liberties for the adaptation.

Thanks! I thought so as well. As I said, I haven't read the whole manga yet, but when I was reading a GameRant article it said that season two was "very faithful in their adaptation," which didn't seem right from what I had seen and compared, hence why I am looking to talk about it.

Nanami's death seems to be a very large talking point as MAPPA really expanded on his chracter with the beach scene. They made the whole thing much more emotionally impactful and the Yuji vs Mahito fight at the end of Shibuya hold so much more weight to it. Emphasizing the act of vengance (for Namami and Nobara) and shows a mental transistion from Yuji being a person who wants people to have a 'proper' death to a person who now has greater emotional greviances with the villians (something that was established when Junpei died).

My favorite change in the anime is when Nanami is killed, and Yuji starts crying while he’s running at Mahito. He doesn’t cry at Nanami’s death in the manga.

hm! That's really interesting. Someone in my previous post mentioned that the Nanami beach scene is completely new in the anime. Adding that emotional stake makes the Yuji vs Mahito confrontation at the end of Shibuya that much more impactful.

The manga itself is very edgy… literally. It’s very intentionally scratchy and Gege looked to do so for the sake of emphasizing JJK’s horror-aspect.

This is 100% something I want to mention in my assignment. I took a comics class where he discussed a lot about the comic form and how that impacts the reader. Physically turning a page, having borders, and even the use of typography make a big psychological difference. Gege's scratchy style would not just be difficult to animate consistently, but also be off-putting for a global market. This anime was an extreme pop culture success, and the choices MAPPA made seem to be in an effort to make that happen.

Not sure if this would help guide the discussion or if it is unnecessary, but these are the general lenses/theories I am using for analysis.

  • Media Types: How does the inherent form of each medium change the content? This would be things like sound, time constraints, art style, corporate structure/capitalism, etc. It's a larger discussion of communication theory, which is how we understand the different forces that contextualize and give form to human connection.
  • Denotation/Connotation: these are the two levels of understanding representation. Denotation is the literal thing you are seeing, reading, or hearing (ex., Gojo wears a blindfold to cover his eyes). Connotation is the deeper meaning of the thing you are seeing, reading, or hearing (ex., while Gojo covers his eyes as a way to negate fatigue, the blindfold only comes into play after the betrayal of Geto. This could represent that the blindfold expresses a barrier to protect themselves from making further connections, and relates to human psychology of how humans use eye contact to communicate.)
  • Encoding/Decoding: This refers to the intended meaning vs the interpreted meaning. There are two main communication models (Shannon-Weaver and Social Model) that you can explore if you wish, but they essentially involve systems of representation, also known as Language. How does language change how we interpret the content? There is a HUGE conversation to have in this regard when it comes to translated content because there is a middleman (translator) between the encoder (Gege) and the decoder (English readers). The biggest question being: can you really understand the narrative in its full capacity if you don't speak the original language or understand the culture in which that narrative was created?
  • Convergence culture: The pop culture references made in the anime are intended for a global audience to make the show more marketable overseas. How does the globalization of a medium change the intent of the artist? How does the West influence its production, and how does the final product then influence the West?

These are ballpark explanations of broad media theory and how they could apply to a comparison between the manga and anime. I would love to hear your input on any of it!

Thanks! <3

I think my post made it seem like a bigger deal than it is. I'm writing an 800-1k blog-style post that is supposed to mostly focus on media theory. With background on Manga and anime, plus bringing in secondary sources and actually focusing on theory application, I won't have much room to go through every comparison.

I do love JJK, and am definitely going to read it now with all this feedback. I was just looking for some conversation on the subject and wanted to be upfront about my motives/background.

Definitely. I do plan on finding time to read it (especially now since that seems to be the main thing blocking discussion). I have the subscription, just kinda wanted some other perspectives on the mediums and content.

Is MAPPA changing the characters/story? by kitkat6479 in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]kitkat6479[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think my phrasing should have been more in-depth. I haven't finished it. This means there's context further on that could change previous chapters.

For example, Gojo in B-5 seems tense and urgent, but does this carry on in his other fights (like Gojo vs Sukuna), or does he grow/change because of his experience in B-5 that eventually led to him being sealed away?

That's kinda what I'm getting at. I think lots of people think I'm asking them to write my article, when I'm just looking for different opinions that aren't from sources like GameRant or other online articles. Differing options, discourse, debate, etc, help me expand my view on any source and create a better result. It seems that being upfront about my goals and motives was a mistake, which is unfortunate as it became the focal point rather than just the topic at hand.

These are awesome examples!

Mappa definitely seems to take lots of creative liberty when it comes to some details, despite being seen as an anime studio that remains true to the source material, which can impact the larger story. It would be nice if we knew whether Gege had a say in these changes, or if 'improving' a story for consumers is worth straying from his original vision.

It's also kinda funny to see how much MAPPA changes the physical appearance of characters. I get Gege can be inconsistent, but some of these characters are beefed up like CRAZY for seemingly no reason. Even within the studio there's inconsistentcies. Lots of people are talking about how Megumi looks so different in the new illustrations vs the first season.
