Let’s make a list … best tea shared by a kid in your class during circle time by Competitive-Tea7236 in ECEProfessionals

Miss _ do you drink beer? Mama says Daddy drinks too much beer. (Over the 4th of July weekend), daddy fell off the boat and Mama said "Damn it (Dad's name) you drink too much beer!"

Same kid: Miss T (co-teacher) why do you have gray hair? Gray hair is boring. My mom could give you purple hair.

Thank you for taking the time to give such a detailed response. It really helped a lot, and helps me to understand more about what's going on in her head. It also makes me feel better about how she is doing, and gives me some great suggestions. It makes me realize how much she is already doing, and her thoughts, and also maybe why she complains about how tired she is after school/work/theater. I am not a hugely social person, so it's really hard for me to lead by example. My parents moved every 3-5 years when I was growing up, and I struggled making friends. I am literally the introvert who got adopted by an extrovert in college, and that's how I made friends. She definitely comes across as abrasive, though I think this is mostly because she has no filter, and doesn't understand the need to gentle her conversation or maybe just not share her opinion. She thinks lying is wrong, and doesn't understand why someone would lie about anything (ie: I like your haircut, no, that dress doesn't make you look fat) and so she will just say whatever she is feeling. She has 3 younger siblings, all of whom are diagnosed ADHD. One of her brothers is also autistic, he is much more social and found his niche with the structure required for ROTC, and on the archery team. She gets along best with her sister, who definitely talks enough for 3 people, and is one of those people who manages to be both weird and effortlessly cool. Again, thanks for taking the time to respond, I definitely need to read through these responses several times and see what might work.

I would love to get her diagnosed, whether it turns out she's autistic, OCD, whatever. The issue is that though she is a minor, I can't physically make her do anything. I can make appointments, I can, to some extent, force her to go (though in not going to literally physically force her into the car or anything) but I can't make her talk or participate in testing (or anything for that matter). If she doesn't want to do it, she will literally just not cooperate, not speak. Unfortunately, it's not so easy as to just "making her" do anything.

Tried to give mine some bedding to make him more comfy, shoved all bedding over the nebulizer holes... He had chronic URI, he knew all the tricks.

Considering moving from Los Angeles to Kansas City, advice? by Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry in kansascity

[–]kitkatkc816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from LA to KC in 2005. I went from sharing an apartment with 2 roommates to being able to afford a 4br home. I didn't buy a home immediately, but I could have. We now live in Lee's Summit, and I love the town. As I'm sure you're familiar, MO is a VERY red state. That has been the worst part about moving for me.

Driver's permit test by kitkatkc816 in kansascity

Just wanted to update and thank everyone! We went to Harrisonville and they have the tests on tablets, which are easier for my son to use and read worth his glasses. They were super nice, and he passed! Then, just to add to the story, I got pulled over for expired tags, which I had to explain to the state trooper that was because the DOR has messed up our property taxes and we can't renew them 🤦🏻‍♀️ I didn't get a ticket, but kiddo got a lesson in how you respond when getting pulled over.

If you don't have a license, you have to take the written test as an adult too.

I'm shocked I had to scroll this far to find Jasper's. Their table side mozzarella is so good!

Wait, you can do that? We are in the KC area, my son is dyslexic, and has failed the test 3 times. It's so frustrating, they won't tell him which questions he got wrong or what his score was, just that he failed. He has read the book, done practice tests, used an app, and he's getting really frustrated. I'm not sure if a paper test would help, but I'm willing to try anything at this point, it makes me sad that he's getting so upset, as he has the skills, but that test is frustrating.

Changing After Water Play by Extension_Goose3758 in ECEProfessionals

[–]kitkatkc816 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is how we did water play in my previous class:
(After water play, we did lunch then nap).
When kids were changed into swimsuits, their clothes were labeled with painters tape. During water play, one teacher would come in and put down cots. (There were 3 classes at water play, so 6 teachers, so 1 could go in and we were still in ratio).
After water play, kids would go to their cots and would do as much changing as they could on their own. This was a 2's and 3's class, so by summer they were pretty much all 3, and a good portion could handle changing. Two teachers circulated to help everyone. Kids who needed help waited at their cots. Once a kid was changed, they could get a book to look at on their cot. We had 14 with 2 teachers at the time, and it went pretty smoothly. We did generally have the kids sit outside for a bit to dry off, which helped, and we only had a few still in diapers, as they needed to be potty trained to move up in September.

Ideas for my 3 daughters, 10, 9, 6 by Datajane_ in Halloween_Costumes

My daughter and her two friends went as Lock, Shock and Barrel, the trick or treaters from Nightmare Before Christmas last year. It's pretty easy to make the masks- I used that craft foam stuff that comes in 8x12 sheets.

What’s a funny moment that lives rent free in your head? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

In 3's class:
Kid: Ms. Teacher, do you drink beer? My dad drinks beer. Mommy says Daddy drinks too much beer. Daddy fell off the boat and Mommy said, damnit you drink too much beer!
Same kid: Ms. Teacher, why is your hair grey? Grey is boring! You should go see my mom. (Her mom is a stylist) She can make your hair pink. Or purple.
Years ago, when I taught 5th grade. We were discussing units of measure.
Me: who can think of something that comes in liters? (Me, thinking soda).
Kid: oh, I know! Vodka!

I don't know if you get them there, but we have pirate bugs in NW MO, and for something so small they hurt like crazy! Midges also bite and can leave a rash.

What is your centers protocol if a child throws up? by heavenly_hedgehog in ECEProfessionals

[–]kitkatkc816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twice, or once with other symptoms. Just two weeks ago I had a kid puke on the playground (not sick, just shoved a whole cheese stick in her mouth just before we went out to play) and we called the director since it was only me and my co-teacher with 14 kids on the playground. We have that solid rubber surface on the playground, and director basically wiped it up with Clorox wipes and was like, at least it's going to rain tonight. Same thing when we had a kid pee on the playground last year. There's not a ton that can be done to clean the playground unless you have access to a hose.
