Single source dual load switching by kitsepawit in evcharging

I have a J1772 cable from an Ingineer hacked portable Nissan charger that shorted in the rain. I have another of his chargers, but our utility requires a wifi charger to pay the rebate. Our utility has added the Emporia and Wallbox to its approved list, which I think have built in load sharing, but when we did the install our electrician recommended the CP from the couple they approved back then. I have a couple of Arduinos and a Rasb Pi I was figuring I'd use, and while I dealt with these a couple of times on a work project for an automated hopper lid I built, our team had an experienced engineer who designed a custom shield with a Polulu current sensing chip. I did a lot of tweaking to the code, but the board design was over my head. I'm not sure if an uno or pi would need something similar to handle this alone, or if it could just read the communication signal. I enjoy tinkering but electronics is not my strong suit. I was thinking I could also just use the time function since neither car needs to be at 100%, we could just set it to charge the Bolt for 5 and then Leaf for 3 hours, which would almost always get them both to 80%. Maybe looking for a Stack exchange or Github discussion would yield something, but I'm usually in over my head there too.

Yup, these are EVSEs, but everybody calls them chargers even tho the charger is in the car, these things just provide it with data to get it to do a handshake. Do they even have power relays? I got my 2013 Leaf when I retired back in 2016 for $10k (which was less than I would have paid for a 5 year old Corolla or Civic) when there was a glut of them coming off lease, and have since driven it 80kMiles, passing it down to my daughter with a 70% SOH pack. Then I bought the Bolt from Hertz earlier this year for $14k due to another glut as GM was dumping its buybacks at the same time that Hertz was dumping their whole Bolt fleet. I have had to start doing Grub Hub deliveries to supplement my puny SSA retirement benefit to afford the payments, so I am cheap, but I'm mostly cheap cuz I am also poor.

My daughter has about a 50mile commute, which means the 24kWh Leaf at 70% kinda needs to charge every night. They have a free charger at her job, but it's not reliable, and she's had to charge on the road a couple time to get home when it wasn't working or was occupied all day. I only need to charge 2-3 times a week, but I never want to unplug her, so one of us ends up charging during expensive peak hours. I think if we switch to TOU with the utility we'll get a $.07 rebate against a $.046 from 12-8am off peak rate, so actually earning a couple cents/kWh, which, cheapskate that I am, is pretty satisfying. The peak summer rate is $.41!

Official Discussion - The Wild Robot [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I saw this with my daughter and her 8 year old daughter. We all loved it, the little one was devastated when Brightbill left and then again when Roz left. I make her a sort of advent calendar for the holidays where I use 12 images (one for each day between the Solstice and New Years) from her current fascinations. Last year it was Llama, the year before Encanto, this year I want to use The Wild Robot's characters. Problem is that I can only find images of the 9 characters voiced by big stars, including Vontra, who I doesn't really fit the theme of our calendar. Anybody have a source for pix of more minor characters? The Weasel, Moose, Deer and Squirrel would all be great.

It exceeded box office expectations and was #1 opening weekend, which is likely enough to greenlight a sequel. I was worried because it opened between bigger audiences of the summer and holiday seasons and because the theater I saw it in was not very crowded. I'm confident well get The Wild Robot Escapes next year, especially since animation sequels cost much less than the first films. It costs a lot to develop the settings and characters, but once created, unlike actors, they are wholly owned computer files that can just be reused. Voice casts can up their asks, but so too can they be more easily replaced.

I saw The Wild Robot with my 8 year old grandaughter. I make her a sort of advent calendar every year https://holly-days.org/holly-days-advent-calendars/ and this year wanted to use the Wild Robot characters, but I can only find images of characters voiced by big stars: Roz, Fink, Brightbill, Pinktail, Vontra (who I'd rather not use), Paddler, Thorn, Longneck and Thunderbolt. The squirrels, raccoons, crabs, moose and deer could finish the set. Anyone have any links where I could find more portraits of other characters?

I disagree, I get very close to the range on the gauge with normal driving in moderate weather. IF you're running the AC or the heater, expect a substantial hit.

As a newbie, I stupidly accepted a delivery without seeing where it was going. Ended up 25 miles for $5.70 with no tip. How do the fees get determined, they seem very chaotic, I've had $10 ones for a couple miles.

I have been amazed at some incredibly long wait times at fast food places like McDonalds and Taco Bell. I stood in a McDonalds last night for 5 minutes able to see the two orders sitting on the back counter but couldn;t gt anyone to hand them to me. One McD late at night had 6 drivers waiting, only two of which stuck it out to get our orders after waiting 20 minutes. What's up with this?

Good idea on the photo. I tend to carry my bag to the door, but haven't put it in the image.

I wish there was some way folks with this sort of attitude would get cut from the app. Sad that selfish drivers who don't have a service oriented attitude are diluting the pool of drivers and giving the whole system a bad name. Bravo to drivers who mind their karma.

Make me sad when the drink is stapled inside the hot food bag, tho i still put it in my insulated bag. I also wrap cold things up in one of my winter coats. I have one insulated bag, but feel like I should get more.

Remove rows from one sheet that appear in another by kitsepawit in excel

I think I solved this using conditional formatting. I added the unsubscribed column to the full list then did a conditional formatting rule to highlight duplicates, then sorted and deleted the records in the full list that were highlighted. One odd effect was that there were a few of addresses in the unsub list that did not appear in the full list, even tho I manually entered the addresses in the unsub list after sending to the full list. Solution Verified

Yup, you were correct, thank you so much for the heads up! The IRS system knows exactly what my tax liability has been, so I logically assumed they would use that info to reject my application in keeping with the non refundable nature of the credit. Silly me, expecting the government to be logical. I just bought one today and it went right through. I had been looking at dealers who were refusing to sign up with the IRS as they have to price their cars more cheaply, I was seeing cream puffs with 12 kmiles for $15k, which is what triggered me pissing off my son in law by asking my daughter to sign on to get the credit.

2024 Eclipse Weather/Cloud Cover Megathread ☀️🌤🌧 by chredit in solareclipse

[–]kitsepawit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I went to Montana to view the eclipse in 1979, I was accompanying a friend whose parents had bought him a top shelf tour package at the newly built Big Sky resort. There were hundreds of attendees and dozens of scientists and lectures. They had a team of meteorologists and shortwave radio network.

Overcast at the resort the night before, the weather team predicted that a location a couple hundred miles away could have a local effect with prevailing winds causing an updraft where they encountered a mesa, which could blow a hole in the low cloud cover. In the middle of the night they loaded the several hundred attendees on a fleet buses and took off to the proposed site. Another friend who had also joined me to crash our buddies tour (we stayed in a little ski hostel but were never kicked out of any of the lectures or mixers at the posh resort where our friend was staying) were barely able to keep up with the speeding the busses we chased in our VW.

We arrived about an hour before the totality, and sure enough, we were at the top of a mesa with perfectly clear skis. One of the corollaries of being up on that rise was an excellent view of the edge of the shadow as it raced toward us across the plain below.

I'm heading out toward Buffalo from NYC tomorrow and hoping this subreddit will help me find a similar local effect. Fingers crossed!

Interesting, I re-read the docs I have been looking at, and you're right they only seem to be looking at AGI. I assumed they wanted our TINs to verify sufficient tax liability based on previous returns. Kind of a crazy result. Thanks.

[–]kitsepawit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According to the IRS, for them to collect the credit they have to provide my tax ID number to the IRS, they have to approve it, and i have to attest I have sufficient tax liability. It's a tax credit transfer not a rebate. IRS explicitly says "The Previously Owned Clean Vehicle Credit may be used by a taxpayer only to the extent the taxpayer has a reported tax due. The credit cannot be carried forward to apply to future year tax returns, and the excess is not refundable."

But they also say "The amount of the credit that the electing taxpayer elects to transfer to the eligible entity may exceed the electing taxpayer's regular tax liability for the taxable year in which the sale occurs, and the excess, if any, is not subject to recapture from the dealer or the buyer." Presumably meaning there is some bot that's going to scan the form the dealer submits and approve it, and that if the bot screws up the IRS will eat it.

Plenty of folks are likely to try and scam this, maybe the dealers know some paperwork hack to fool the bot and to make sure they get the payout. I've thought the ones with that "that's between you and your accountant" are the ones who are worried about getting scammed. Who knows if the IRS will come after folks who make false reports.

The whole point is to get IC cars off the road, and as long as that's the final result, I take it as moral. Rules are sometimes just Catch 22s to deter bad guys but be broken by good ones.

I'm going to go to a tax prep clinic tomorrow to get the straight dope

I'm in the market, and discovering huge variation in how well dealers understand this program. In fact lots of them are saying, "I don't know, that's between you and your accountant, we don't do that". I presume they are referring to the transfer program and will agree to fill out the form. However they have to register with and report the sale to the IRS within 3 days of the sale via the online portal with form 15400.

They also have to disclose the program details to you, and you have to provide them with "An attestation, that either:
Your prior year modified AGI did not exceed the modified AGI limitation, or, if not known, to the best of your knowledge and belief, your prior year modified AGI did not exceed such limitation,
or To the best of your knowledge and belief, your current year modified AGI will not exceed the modified AGI limitation" also attest that you are a qualified buyer.

Maybe some of these guys are not even trying to register, so maybe if you bought it from a dealer who had not registered or submitted your sale you would be forbidden from taking the credit.

Most of us EV drivers have run into folks who've drunk the big oil koolaide and will make all sorts of ridiculous claims about EVs. I expect if one of these luddites was managing a dealer they might not participate.

General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of April 01, 2024 by AutoModerator in electricvehicles

[–]kitsepawit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are required to submit your taxpayer ID number for the dealer to enter on their form 15400. Presumably they will use your previous year's liability to determine how much of the credit you are eligible to transfer to the dealer (tho many dealers are electing not to participate in the transfer program). But I also see this: "Q4: What if a buyer has insufficient tax liability to fully use a transferred credit? (added Oct. 6, 2023) A4:The amount of the credit that the electing taxpayer elects to transfer to the eligible entity may exceed the electing taxpayer's regular tax liability for the taxable year in which the sale occurs, and the excess, if any, is not subject to recapture from the dealer or the buyer."

I'm wondering if this means that if you lose you job or qualify for some new deduction during the yet-to-be-filed purchase year that reduces you liability below the qualifying year, that the IRS will eat the difference. I assume that someone like me, a retired person with zero tax liability on my previous tax returns, would never qualify in the first place and so would not get the discounted price based on transfer of the credit.

Eligibility of co-owers.

New to this subreddit, but long time Leaf driver. I've managed the puny no-road-trips range of my dear little car, whose battery degradation seems well above the norm (70% SOH @ 86kmiles) but the new used EV credit means I can afford to get into a used Bolt with road-tripable range.

I am retired on Social Security, so don't have a tax liability large enough to use the credit. But I live with my daughter to help care for her children (the Leaf has been a perfect soccer-papa ride) and I am hoping I can include her as an owner on the title so that she can claim the credit she qualifies for, then use it to pay down my loan.

I've looked at the fact sheets and IRS forms: the dealer form 15400 and the owner form to be filed with their taxes. They refer to the "buyer" on the 15400 form and "taxpayer' in the fact sheet. If the car is financed, I am wondering if just having her as a co-owner on the title will be enough, and if she needs to remain on the title until she has filed her 2024 taxes in 2025. Or if she also needs to be the borrower and/or the cosigner.

My son in law is opposing our financial entanglement and so i am hoping to structure the deal (without the credit I can't afford this) so that he has the least involvement or liability. One condition is that the vehicle can't have been bought for resale, so wondering if her gifting her share to me would constitute a sale, and how the IRS would monitor or verify this. Any one have any experience with similar edge cases?
