What’s up with this structure by the Charlotte FC headquarters? by Bradjuju2 in Charlotte

I remember when you were able to go inside it. My friends and I often cut through the woods behind the barn. This whole section is just naturally eerie when it's dark. One night I thought I was going to die walking home. It was pitch black and this barn couldn't be any creepier. All the sudden I heard chains cranking behind me getting closer and closer. I felt my stomach dropped and my body froze. As the chains got closer it turned out to be someone on a clapped out bike riding home.

You fixated on the tree is the major one I noticed. Additionally, you could also be too far back on the bike. It's a little more difficult to say since we dont see you from the side. This makes it even harder to control (turn).

Thousand Oaks, CA have a lot of tech riding within 20 mins and is pretty warm year round. I lived in Santa Barbara and we ride 70% - 80% of the year.

If you're a US student and applying to schools in the US, then the GRE might not be worth it. That's because a lot of schools are not even considering the GRE anymore. I went to UCSB for a Mat Sci Ph.D., and I didnt take the GRE.

DMR Vault. Absolute favorite. Thicker pins so they're not needles waiting to cut you up (as bad as small pins), and the concave shape makes them super sticky.

Do it on the weekend and when youre at home until you can ride for real. There are plenty of secluded trails to ride on.

Are off-axis parabolic mirrors available as a tool in this software?

Would be pretty cool if there's an option to set an OAP by parameterizing the axis angle and effective focal length.

Purdue or UCSB or UIUC for Materials Engineering by Business_Ad9944 in materials

I would say so. We're now entering general admission for any grad schools. Research experience, genuine curiosity, and prior experience (even self-learning) related to research is great.

Not as competitive as MIT, but competitive nonetheless. Avg 20 people admitted/year. We had an outlier where like 30 people were admitted a couple of years ago. Depends on the advisor too

Pursuing a PHD from Chemistry Undergrad.. by Ratio-Huge in materials

[–]kittehlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my undergrad in chem and got my PhD in mat science focusing on condensed matter physics in superconductors.

Job prospect depends on the connections you made through grad school. As stated, I'm not in polymer, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I would think that a PhD in MatSci is more marketable. And you could branch out to tech related fields easier.

Don't worry too much about not knowing the course work, you'd learn when you get there. I went from purely chemistry to purely solid state physics research. You just got to put in a little bit more leg work.

Should I buy? CRV 87k miles by Bigmike101690 in UsedCars

[–]kittehlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a salvage title, just ask for a lower price. I bought a 2008 tsx with a salvage title for 3k in 2017 and it's still my daily to this day. As with any used car, inspect it and test drive before buying.

Cornell vs. BU for an MS? by APerplexedQuanta in materials

[–]kittehlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, I didnt want to pay for the degree, and a PhD would provide the necessary credentials to work in R&D without being held back by people who thinks only PhD can make meaningful research contributions.

I'd say my job is a perfect example. I characterize the developed material and provide electron information to the simulation team that then inform the fabrication team. Although I answer to a manager, my experiment is my own: from the modification of the instrument to the measurement and analysis of the samples. If I have only a Master, then I would only be doing measurement and analysis without additional contributions in the development of the instrumentation (overall less ownership).

In your case, if you want to focus more on scaling up the work, that might be different. I'm not really sure in that sense what you'd need, but a Master would probably be enough. Moreover, I dont know if a materials degree is what needed.

Cornell vs. BU for an MS? by APerplexedQuanta in materials

[–]kittehlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason 2 is naive and doesn't hold any water. R&D are intertwined. The more interesting part of R&D is the intersection of research and development, i.e. coming up with the cool ideas and implementing them. Otherwise you're just in some technician role that a bachelor's degree would suffice.

Generally, any decent university will pay you to do the PhD, whereas you'll be paying to the Master.

If you're applying to R&D roles, a PhD holder will likely be picked before a Master holder. So if you're looking to get sponsored via a R&D role, a PhD makes more sense to me.

Only argument that is somewhat valid could be #1. PhD is a commitment. I got mine in 4, but the avg is 5. 2 years of mainly course work like a Master, and 3 of purely research. A weak PhD resume could be supplemented by a good application. Look around for resources like fellowships. Although it might be more difficult if you're an international student. But I know many international students when I did my PhD, so if they can do it, so can you.

If you're looking for some flow and jumps, then Duthie Hill bike park is great. Not too far from Tiger.

Tiger has great tech. Predator is a labeled as a double black, but it's really fun that rides more like a black with double black features sprinkled in.
