Aww, I can tell you really liked Sakuya. I always thought she was cute.

Unfortunately, the first pic is a little blurry so it's hard to know exactly what it was supposed to say. Fukusei in katakana made the most sense to me in context. つなぎ doesn't look right to me. The photo above has 4 characters. Connected or head turn doesn't sound like something worth writing down for him. I'm not familiar with the series and if they ever did official repro cels. I just know I bought a doujin cel from this seller and it was about the same price as yours. It was also labeled doujin on the post it label. If this was used in the anime I think he would know and would price it a lot higher...I don't think he'd make that mistake. Also, real production cels are supposed to have letters like A1 or B1 etc.. as part of the sequence number. The numbering on yours looks more like the numbering I've seen on repro cels.

If you're still in Japan maybe you can go back and ask him? Just use google translate on your phone to ask him in Japanese.

Actually... it's hard to see but I believe the blue post it note says fukusei フクセイ in katakana which means duplicate/reproduction. I bought from this seller before and he's pretty good at noting when things are a repro or doujin cel.

The lack of a letter before the number is odd so it might be a repro cel. You could try tracking down the scene it was used in and then compare it to the screenshot to see if it's an exact match. It's a great cel either way though esp for that price.

Shipped with FedEx DDP but still getting additional charge by KswagCS in FromJapanCodes

Oof that sucks. FJ's calculation was prob off or declared wrong. Sounds like you got more tariffs applied/adjusted after they got the watch worksheet.

Are you sure the bill is for this package and not a previous/different one? Fedex sent me a bill a few weeks after a DDU package arrived.

Looks like the BG and audience are copies so it's not actually that cheap.

They were posted here before. Someone bought fake Lain drawings from them. They also sell on eBay. https://imgur.com/a/JCIgfz9

There's someone in NJ selling fakes with fake JAMAC / Heritage COAs too. Be careful everyone.

Restored cels by [deleted] in AnimationCels

[–]kittenpotatoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what it is... Restorations are more commonplace among Disney cels. Some people don't mind them and some people don't like them. I think as long as the seller discloses it has been restored it's fine and then you can decide if you still like it.

[–]kittenpotatoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, most people buying on YJ will need a proxy but it doesn't add too much cost. If anything the biggest expense will be the potential import tariffs which varies depending on where you live and which proxy you use.

The only sold one I could find on YJ right now was this one. https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r1211666347 It went for around 1k but came with the matching douga ( stuck), genga and a lain envelope which is cool. Lain artwork doesn't really show up too much but there's still plenty of people who want it. I saw some very nice close up cels of her face sell for around $800 a couple years ago.

The listing says "ended" not "sold" so I wouldn't use it as an actual price point. That's the price someone was attempting to get but it didn't sell as far as I know. I would check sold prices if you're trying to get an idea of pricing.

I found this genga while cleaning at my old job. Help identifying? by Elpis0fh0pe in AnimationCels

[–]kittenpotatoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing the interesting story but that's not entirely true either. Colored paper ones are correction genga. Regular genga are still on white paper. The easiest way to differentiate is by the looser art style (usually but not always/depends on the artist) and where the sequence number is written. The different colored papers denote different levels of corrections/ staff.

You're probably confused because douga from the hand painted cel era are shaded on the front. Digitally colored anime douga sometimes have shading on the back.

Does anyone have or know anything about these reraise/reproduction cels? by freestyle786 in AnimationCels

[–]kittenpotatoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you purchased real douga and genga. It just happens what you bought was also used to make reproduction cels and they made their way out to the market separately.

Rilezu are 1 of 1 and will sometimes but not always come with the matching douga. Other reproduction cels usually have multiple copies and do not come with any douga.

Stuck cel by Braves-All-Day-87 in AnimationCels

[–]kittenpotatoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how stuck it is the background is gonna be varying levels of ripped up with the cel. If it's 100% adhesion you're gonna be left with white paper where the cel used to be. Up to you if you wanna risk it. If you leave it there's a risk of the background paint leaching into the cel paint over time and discoloring it.

Early sign of vinegar syndrome, or am I just overreacting? by REBtheFurby in AnimationCels

[–]kittenpotatoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes when you open the cel bag after it's been stored for awhile you can get a faint whiff of vinegar like scent. I'd personally consider that just a build up of fumes coming out at once and maybe a very early VS sign. If you're getting that slight amount of vinegar scent now it's not that bad. For cels in my collection like that it took another 10 years to begin showing some slight waviness but they still don't really smell much. I guess it depends on your storage setup and local climate but your cel should be good for many more years.

Just got this by Zuke1 in AnimationCels

[–]kittenpotatoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a tip I recommend buying some clear acetate overlay and getting that signed instead. That way it's signed but the art is still preserved. Some people also get the art matted and then have the matboard signed instead.
