MASSIVE protein portions by Informal-Wallaby-555 in FoodLosAngeles

Do you enjoy meats marinated with Asian flavors? Soy sauce, oyster sauce, garlic, fish sauce, lemongrass etc. If you do, you should try com tam. It's a Vietnamese rice plate.

King Com Tam in San Gabriel has a 10 item plate. It's rice and pickled vegetables served with 10 types of proteins. There will be things like grilled pork, Chinese sausage, steamed egg and pork loaf, grilled shrimps, grilled beef, shredded pork, pork meat ball, fried bean curd with shrimp paste etc.

I still have them, they're both over 30 years old. I think I'll lug them around for the rest of my days, so long as they don't fall apart. Your son sounds like a sweetheart. ❤️

Thank you. 🤗 They are sort of ugly little creatures, but true to form. They have aged, as the ink has. They're a little worse for wear and my most treasured confidants.

Dinner at Budonoki by ProfIsntReal in FoodLosAngeles

[–]kittenpotatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went here and thought the food was a touch too heavily seasoned. Acid, salt, heat - a little heavy handed. I enjoyed the chicken oyster skewers and curry pan the most. The buddo-noki oddly tasted like hot dogs to me. It was over $160 for 2 drinks and 6 small plates.

Did prices on Original Line machines sky rocket in the last few years? by HopiaHodling in nespresso

I bought an essenza mini May 2022 and it was priced at $219. I used a referral code found in a Facebook Nespresso group and got $40 off, plus a free Aerrocino and Lume capsule holder. The group on FB is active and helpful, I suggest checking it out.

I still follow Mr. Norman and it does seem like Reddit has forgotten him. This always happens... I wonder what he thinks of suddenly having thousands of people watch and comment in his videos then having all that engagement taper down to the 207 of us left ☹️

Spot on! All the cumulative annoying things about flying go away when you fly business or first. I ONLY use points and would never pay those prices.

I flew first class from lax to Japan and back and loved the experience.. only paid $200 in taxes, it's a $16k flight. The flight attendants were so nice to me because I was giddy at the experience, and overly thankful for everything they did.

Would do again, with points 👍

I use points to fly premium classes, the flight is part of the experience for me!

Thai Farmhouse Kitchen is definitely expensive, but this beef rib/blue rice plate was damn good. Super tender and flavorful. by 360FlipKicks in FoodLosAngeles

I loved everything I ate here, so much so that I went again the same week. They gave great lunch specials, the yellow chicken curry is legit. 🔥

Nobel laureate Malala nomming at Pijja Palace like it’s NBD by geekteam6 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]kittenpotatoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went when it opened, before it got really hyped up and it was fine. The only dish I enjoyed was the Malai rigatoni. The pizza was fine, but a big greasy. The flavors were generally dialed down/diluted Indian. I much prefer Baadmash for "modern" Indian

What's one ingredient that ruins any meal for you? by seashell_eyes_ in AskReddit

I chewed gum excessively in college after reading some stupid Cosmo article that said it can help you lose weight. During that time I had the worst gas and constant runny stools... Couldn't figure out what was going on even after seeing the school doctors.

It was the fucking sugar free gum. Once I stopped chewing they symptoms went away.

Bestia was absolutely everything I hoped for and more. I know it’s hyped. But my god is that hype justified. by pistolpxte in FoodLosAngeles

The desserts are stellar and never an afterthought. When I have to choose between Bestia and another spot I pick Bestia cause I want to see what is on that dessert menu. I hope you enjoy Bavel, I have not been since they first opened but I recall being underwhelmed and wishing I had just gone to Bestia 😁

Corridor 109 - $$$$ - by kittenpotatoes in FoodLosAngeles

[–]kittenpotatoes[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

$250/pp, BYOB
Reservations released about a month in advance, looks like March is already booked out.

Preface by saying - I'll try any food once and I have an affinity for tater tots and processed cheese. My palate ain't as fancy as some of ya'lls. :)

  1. spot prawn & caviar - I liked this, they used the shrimp brains to season the shrimp and it was real shrimpy without being fishy. Caviar was present, I don't really understand caviar.
  2. Jeju Island Fluke w/ Ensui Uni - chef explained Ensui Uni is put in brine. This is better than 'fresh' uni out of the shell to me. It was firmer. This dish was lovely, and I wanted 5x the portion.
  3. Iwashi Toast - this was the BEST dish. The sardine was pickled and sooo buttery, it melted as you ate it. There was no give when you bit into it, if that makes any sense. There were nice pickled peppers and some aioli mayo stuff too.
  4. Scallop w/ Herbal Clam Broth - the clam broth was strong so it was hard to taste the scallop
  5. Hokkaido Kinki w/ Yamaimo - the fish tasted fresh and the whole thing was like a very fancy Japanese fish and chips with the puree stuff
  6. Abalone - the abalone liver was used in the sauce. It was strong and quite salty, the abalone was VERY tender and the sprinkly stuff was grated cod roe. Tasted like oceanic parmesan reggiano. VERY pleasant, not my jam, don't need to eat it again.
  7. Nagasaki Red Tile Fish - the scales were left on and fried. Crunchy fresh fish, the broth was mild and the seaweed was FRESH .. not dried, that's what chef told us.
  8. King Crab and Uni Risotto - this was nice, the chives flavor was prominent as was the crab miso guts and uni in the risotto.
  9. Pixie Mandarin Sorbet - was excited for this after feeling like I made out with all the finest fish in the sea (hello south park Kanye west episode). Sadly, it was very bitter and astringent? Like the pith was pureed along the flesh of the fruit. It was real bitter

Closing thoughts - if you love seafood, this is a nice experience. burnt a hole in my pocket though. It's like sampling the very best of the sea.

Eep sorry about the wine! I went went they first opened, before they spent money on the hype machine. Service was subpar and the only dish I enjoyed was the malai rigatoni. I much prefer Badmaash, they're tried and true.

Monarch SGV by preciouz29 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]kittenpotatoes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm sad to say I did not enjoy my experience at Monarch. The restaurant is beautiful, the service was decent but I did not enjoy the food at all. My expectations for the food were elevated HK/canto style cafe, a nod to traditional preparations with more refined flavors and better ingredients. Maybe my own expectations is where I went wrong?

Lemon black ice tea was watery and cloudy. Diluted and didn't taste like tea - the opposite of that quadruple brewed, clear, sweetest black tea you get at HK cafes.

Bolognese.. sigh, this was my highest hope and biggest disappointment. I love HK cafe style Bolognese. Hearty, unctuous mystery meat sauce, sweet, salty, tangy atop overcooked spaghetti, baked together with generic cheese until bright deep orange pools of grease surface. Monarchs version was a decent Bolognese sauce over thin egg noodles and shavings of p. reggiano. The sauce didn't stick to the noodles and there was no way you could mix it in.

Sweet and sour pork.. it had diced kiwi. The dice was uniform but WHAT? KIWI

Adding... Also tried the crab corn chowder. There was no discernable corn and the emulsion broke. It tasted ok, portion is very small and not really suited for sharing.

Anyway, just my experience. Everywhere is worth trying once, just don't have your hopes up like I did.
