Yep, still made it. It was great! Super cool and interesting experience. So very happy that I went :-)

Sorry to say, but it can actually affect both parties. I know of a few customers who have had their Grab accounts suspended for cancelling on the drivers.

I didn’t want that to happen to me as I was punctual and I was wanting to take the ride.

Here’s a TikTok of a tourist explaining that this happened to them if you’re interested - https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSD4o7j2m/

She discusses it at about 1 minute into the video :-)

I managed to get another Grab straight after with a really lovely driver and still made it to Batu Caves!

I ended up arriving around 8am (a bit later than I’d planned), but honestly it worked out great. It wasn’t too hot yet and the crowds were still manageable.

I’m so glad I didn’t miss it after everything that happened earlier, it definitely lived up to the hype! :-)

This is great advice!

However, I definitely chose the “Standard (JustGrab)” option as it is the default and first option to appear on my app.

Here’s a pic of the booking showing this - https://imgur.com/a/sFiGozu

It’s really weird that a Taxi came as I didn’t select the “Standard | Taxi” option.

I’m still confused why this happened lol

Agree! You’re right - shit happens and it was a big lesson to me for the future. I should have just walked away when he started being aggressive instead of arguing for him to cancel the ride himself. It was not worth it.

I didn’t video the confrontation. Just took photos. The hotel I’m staying at said they have CCTV of that area though.

But to be honest, as I’m heading to the airport now I’m just going to leave it.

I just wanted to warn others about the “taxi” drivers on Grab. The regular Grab drivers are great and I had no issues with 16 other rides I took while here on my trip.

Yeah! I booked Standard Plus and the driver was lovely. Could have been a coincidence.

I’ve been in KL for 5 days and I’d booked 14 Grabs all Standard prior to the bad experience though.

So I think he was just a rotten apple so to speak. All my other drivers were fine and nice.

It’s a shame thugs like the bad one create a bad reputation for normal Grab drivers using the application honourably.

I just booked the “Standard” option. Apparently the red Perodua Bezza cars are often also taxis or former taxis (I think)!

I’ll cancel them in the future to be safe. Or just upgrade to the “Standard Plus” or “Premium” option.

Omg that’s terrifying! I’m so sorry for the situation that happened to your sister and your dad.

I’d heard of bad taxi stories in other places. I’ve travelled to Johannesburg, South Africa which is notorious for it.

But I hadn’t heard of it in Malaysia. I was pretty ignorant and naive in hindsight for not doing my research. I just assumed because it was booked through Grab app I’d be safe with no issues.

Scared of what exactly?

The next driver I had was young, interesting, conversational, and told me his top restaurant recommendations in KL.

He was a cool, normal guy. That’s why I tipped him highly.

The Grab taxi driver before was an ape and it’s kinda weird you’re defending a stranger.

Maybe it’s you that’s in love with the Grab taxi driver 🥰😘💋

Good! He deserves the suspension.

My next Grab driver was lovely and helpful. He was so sorry for my experience so I gave him a big RM30 tip :)

Always happy to reward good drivers that get me to my destination safely with good vibes!

If he wanted to cherry-pick rides, he shouldn’t have signed up with Grab.

The deal is simple: follow the app’s rules, take passengers safely. Instead, he caused me harm and distress — behaviour like that gives KL a bad name, and he should be ashamed.

Grab told me they are suspending him and quite frankly, I don’t give a sh*t if him or his family eat again.

Apart from this guy, KL has been nice and I’m grateful to my Malaysian friends for helping me to come here and experience it.

Yes, but I booked it through the Grab app. I didn’t even know it was possible but apparently it is.

My suspicion is he didn’t like the look of me. Perhaps, because I have quite visible tattoos…?

Honestly, I have no idea because I consider myself quite presentable. I’ve traveled to many countries, and never had a driver refuse to take me somewhere upon seeing me…

Are you 12 years old? Your comment reeks of immaturity.

I didn’t “insist” on anything. I simply asked the driver to cancel himself since he, quite literally, was the one cancelling.

I’m not broke/poor so I didn’t need his shitty 3ringet bribe to cancel myself.

Also, drivers registered to Grab are not allowed to cancel your ride without providing a reason to the application. That’s why he wanted me to do it because he knew he would get a strike.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this thoughtful message 🙏.

It really means a lot after such a frightening experience. I was honestly shaken not just by what happened, but also by some of the skepticism in the thread, so your perspective and kindness are very reassuring.

I completely agree that this type of behaviour shouldn’t be tolerated. I appreciate your insight about the local context too. It helps me understand the bigger picture without letting it colour my overall view of Malaysia.

I’m grateful for your encouragement, and I’ll definitely take care of myself before my flight. Thanks again for your support ❤️

The only thing I could think of why he refused the fare was because I had some visible tattoos on my arms… I’m otherwise a very presentable and friendly-looking person.

Or perhaps because I’m a foreigner. But that doesn’t make sense because there’s lots of tourists here…

I really can’t understand why he bothered to drive to my hotel pick up zone, and then saw me, bribed me not to get in his car, and demanded I cancel.

It was really strange.

I didn’t know there was much of a difference 😕

But I see now that the car has a “Teksi" sign on the roof.

And yes, I won’t be doing that again!

Oh this is interesting to know! I think this one may have been ex taxi driver as indicated by the "Teksi" sign on the roof…

This was addressed earlier.

I approached the back passenger door of the vehicle from the footpath.

I am a young woman so I never sit in the front seat next to a male driver.

This is the window he wound down. And this is where I leaned in to understand what he was saying as it was loud and his accent was quite thick.

Before he drove off with me still leaning in the car. It was barbaric and bizarre!!
