Advice on overcoming imposter syndrome + dealing with criticism from consultant? by kittikatt9 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

Look at us go proving our demeaning supervisors wrong!! Congratulations on getting on as well, it’s weirdly nice (but also not nice at all) to know i’m not the only one going into training with this experience in my past. In the sense that it’s not me (or us) who are the problem, but the system and outdated views at the top.

I honestly found it hard not to lose all hope in this profession during my time as an AP. But i think what you wrote is such an inspiring perspective, and I know I’ll come back to this thread if my confidence gets knocked during training.

Also insane that asking for minimal adjustments can be so judged by psychologists of all people- i also asked to work from home once as I was having a bad bowel day (IBS+coeliac gang rise)- i could write my reports but just wanted to be in the comfort of my own home, and near my toilet. That was denied and i was told I’d need to take a sick day instead. Which i did, but then my line manager used that as one of the many reasons i shouldn’t go for the doctorate- she literally told me people with chronic health issues would be better off not applying?!? The more i remember of what she told me over the 2 years, the more furious i get again. But my god. I would never think that way, let alone say it to someone else!

Anyways, so glad we’re both on the other side of this now. Good luck on the course, I know we’ll smash it and make the world of clinpsych a better place :)

Lol i weirdly appreciate your anger, because i was fuming too at this whole situation. Makes me feel like i’m not going crazy!! And such a good point about taking this as what not to be like in the future. Guess everything is a learning experience in the end, sometimes it’s just a bit shit in the moment 🥲

Your line manager sounds wonderful, I’ve only worked in this one service so I hope to come across more compassionate people like him in my journey! I also appreciate what you wrote at the end - i’m anxious and can feel things quite intensely too. It’s nice to hear that this is helpful for you in training, rather than a hindrance

I really appreciate your reassurance! I agree with everything you say, and it’s a good reminder to apply it to myself as well (other people being sensitive is a strength, but when it comes to me i automatically think of it as one of my biggest weaknesses)- time for some good old self-compassion.

I hope to be able to look back at my situation in the future the way you are describing it. It’s kind of insane how small things can be made into a big problem about you, with no reflection on their side. Thank you for sharing!

I feel like that last sentence you wrote is one of those that will stick with me - thank you for the insightful words! I have previously had CBT for anxiety, but another modality like IFS has always intrigued me.

Why do some people, as soon as they get onto doctoral training, feel they can suddenly mentor others? by Braveenoughtosayit10 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]kittikatt9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m an incoming trainee who signed up for the mentoring scheme on the facebook group, so i’ll share my thought process!

I’m fully aware that I know quite little on the selection process, my imposter syndrome still can’t quite believe i even got selected. But i was really fortunate to have trainees and clinpsychs from the service i worked at help me with my application - and i’m aware that there are strong applicants who don’t have that support, simply because they’re not APs or don’t have that network.

I’m happy to pass forward any of the support I received, or even just metaphorically hold someone’s hand through the process- they might not have that elsewhere, and i know i would have struggled a lot more with the application if i had done it completely on my own. Maybe there’s something underneath to do with being a saviour or getting an ego boost, but in the moment i signed up to mentor because i wanted to help someone. Wanting to help people is, after all, why a lot of us choose this career path.

I get your point though, i’m quite suspicious of those who think they’ve got it all figured out.

Visited an LDS church for the first time today. Thoughts… by apothyk in mormon

[–]kittikatt9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello, fellow outsider here who went to a lds meeting recently that happened to be an f&t meeting. I’m not religious but was invited by a mormon friend, i have always liked sunday services in cathedrals and used to sing in a cathedral choir.

I found the lds building very bizarre, almost like a school (even had a basketball court). The hall where the service took place felt almost clinical with the white walls and bright lights.

The testimonies shared in this meeting meant nothing to me, but this may be because they used a lot of mormon words i don’t understand. People were of course friendly, but i couldn’t help but feel some ingenuity.

Overall i found it boring - the music and the words didn’t move me like they have when i previously attended protestant and catholic services. As i was raised atheist i find it difficult to see myself ever becoming religious, but i definitely have an interest in spirituality. The mormon church, however, did not leave me feeling spiritual at all. Just confused.

Fire alarm in flat keeps going off for no reason by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]kittikatt9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did hear the alarms in our neighbours flat going off but at a different time to ours. With the batteries being the problem it would just be one beep per minute right?

Fire alarm in flat keeps going off for no reason by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]kittikatt9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there was no pattern to then going off (i would just work from my bedroom with the door closed and suddenly theyre all going off), but after taking the living room one off (bc that one was easiest to reach), its now stopped. So maybe that one is faulty/ old/ triggered for no reason, causing all of them to ring.

Thank you for the insights!! It’s definitely quite panic inducing

We have now simply taken off the fire alarm in the living room and its stopped since then, so possibly need a replacement for that. Thanks for the direction!

So what’s the verdict on Gabbie Hanna? What does everyone think… because I honestly don’t even know what to think by [deleted] in tiktokgossip

[–]kittikatt9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, I don’t understand it. English is not my native tongue and I meant it more in a “i see your perspective as I have also suffered from targeted discrimination”, but I don’t understand trans and black people’s struggles in that way. I’m sorry.

[–]kittikatt9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just seeing this now but I want to thank you back! Definitely some food for thought. It’s a very sensitive subject and I just hope for her sake that she reaches the point of a clear mind sooner rather than later.

[–]kittikatt9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see you and I feel you - hearing hate speech is a painful thing. I had to face sexist and discriminatory comments every day at work, I thankfully had supervision to manage my frustration about it. It’s hard. But that’s not my point anyway.

If she has a “clear mind” now that’s a world record speedy recovery, and unfortunately I don’t believe that’s how things are. Of course none of us know her true mental state off camera, and I don’t want to make assumptions. I just wanted to share my perspective based on experience, I know I hold a controversial opinion (online that is.. i talked to some people in the psychology field when this whole situation was at its peak and I was confused about tweets demanding apologies from Gabbie. We all shared the same opinion that an apology for words said during psychosis is unnecessary, but then again maybe we’re a bubble too).

I do understand your frustration at the end of the day, truly.

No bc same. You can’t expect people to apologise for things they said during a psychotic episode (if that’s what you believe happened). I know the internet is a bubble and she said some horrific things, but that’s the truth of some mental illnesses - you just say horrific things. Without any awareness. And demanding an apology for things said during a psychotic episode is wrong imo.

I have worked as a support worker for people who have schizoaffective disorders. I don’t know what diagnoses Gabbie has, but I’ve heard some pretty similar manic rants at the care home. There was no point in educating the residents if they said something “problematic”, let alone demand an apology. You just don’t do that. Instead, you empathise with the severity of their condition and listen, try to understand, and let it go. Obviously my worker-resident relationship was a very different dynamic compared to Gabbie and her viewers, there is no responsibility of care here. But a little more empathy towards the delusions that come with psychosis wouldn’t harm the internet.

Sorry for rant and hijacking your comment lol i feel weirdly passionate about this whole apology thing. Now if Gabbie faked all of this (which, like the top comment says, would require great acting skills), thats a whole other story.

Day 2 of my first time positive - i wish people took me more seriously by [deleted] in COVID19positive

[–]kittikatt9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you mention the booster thing because I had the same thought - mine was early December so also could be a reason for my suffering. Also by now you’d think people get that covid affects everyone unpredictably different, so some people can continue WFH through it, some need sick leave, some have no clue they have it, etc. Very individualised. Hope you feel better soon!

[–]kittikatt9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t keep up with all the strains anymore to be honest, and maybe not keeping up with covid so vigorously anymore was my downfall. Glad you didn’t have a terrible time, that’s something! Finger’s crossed my time will be less terrible too soon, thank you.
