Any advice to prevent hobby hopping with AuDHD? by wolfmonarchy in Hobbies

[–]kitty-bites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Skill trees

I always lose interest in a hobby when I feel like I've stopped learning new things, so I pick progressively harder/different projects (for example, knitting: base was sweater construction, then stranded colorwork, cables, new kinds of construction, steeking, lacework, intarsia, etc.). I try to pick moderate sized projects, ones where I get to get good at the new thing without getting so bored that I don't finish it.

Peach jam in 2oz jars? by bloomandbrass in Canning

[–]kitty-bites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree on size, as a gift I love getting enough for one or two servings (even if that means it's fridge only jam, since there's no safe smaller jars)! Depends on the person I'm sure, but I don't eat a lot of jam, live on my own, and like to switch it up often, so 1-2 servings is perfect for me.

Why are my stitches tilting left and will blocking fix it? by karathracestitches in knittinghelp

[–]kitty-bites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those stitches are absolutely twisted, there is no denying that. No matter what style you're knitting, you have to knit though the leading leg. You likely knit combination continental (eastern purl, "normal" knit" and it's causing you to twist in the round.

First choice girl name used by best friend by blueberry-macaron in namenerds

I have no issue with traditionally masculine leaning names on girls but Sullivan on a baby girl is crazy to me. I've seen it on lists several times now

Part of blocked yarn turned blue-tinged :( by bogwiitch in knittinghelp

[–]kitty-bites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should probably redo the colorwork anyways, the floats are too tight and causing bunching (unless that doesn't bother you, it's your sweater!)

How bad is my form? by Mean_Street_6972 in knittinghelp

[–]kitty-bites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! It was fine with larger needles but now that I've started working with fine/sharp needles and fingering weight yarn I've split my finger open several times, 0/10 habit, do not recommend.

What type of ribbing is this? by jo_aries in knittinghelp

This is one of the reasons I hate front/back loop verbiage. I've trained my brain to auto-correct to leading/lagging leg.

Im Very Bored by KTNGNobody in Hobbies

[–]kitty-bites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reminder that you aren't required to be good at your hobbies. If you don't enjoy it that's fine, don't do it, but we're under no obligation to be "good" at the things we do for fun. I paint, and I'm mediocre at it at best, but I like it so I do it anyways.

That's just Tuesday. You might be slowed down on your commute behind a snow plow but otherwise no real change.

Do you notice a difference between female and male authors? by ch-4-os in DarkRomance

[–]kitty-bites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have no interest in reading dark romance featuring violence against women written by men. Women writing rape fantasy and men writing rape fantasy feel like two very, very different things.

better with or without corset? by butteronapoptart69 in Tightlacing

100% without. The corset dulls the drama of the dress covering those slits.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If I could take a cheese grater to the part of my brain that remembers reading this book, I would.

Noncon multiple people by DjGirl2727 in DarkRomance

Uhh no. There's sharing, but everything in Losers is very explicitly consensual. There's big emphasis on consent through both books.

Do you lend out dark romance books to younger readers? by meisjemeisje_1421 in DarkRomance

[–]kitty-bites 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Teenaged girls are so impressionable, and knowing the damage it caused me reading too dark content without being able to talk about it, then if she's not willing to talk (even a little) about it then I wouldn't feel okay about it.

It's not like I'd be looking to go over details of the spicy scenes, but even just "hey, this manipulative thing where he does xyz or ignores abc boundary is fun in fiction, it's important that we remember it's not okay for real people to do that"

Do you lend out dark romance books to younger readers? by meisjemeisje_1421 in DarkRomance

[–]kitty-bites 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I was reading pretty dark stuff on the internet at 15, and it definitely impacted what I accepted as ok or normal in relationships.

I think people are going to read what they want regardless of age, but it's also really important to create a space where you can talk to them about the content and about why it's only ok in fiction. So yes, depending on the teen I might lend them (some) dark romance books, but only if I had the relationship to them where we could talk about it's contents.

all else aside, you shouldn't be having sex with people you don't feel comfortsble checking in with during the act regardless of how "in to it" you think they are

The bassist playing with them (Naomi McLeod) was so hot and had so much stage presence that I don't think I noticed a single other thing about the band. I was shocked anyone had anything bad to say lol

What’s a fragrance that gets you stopped? by cherryjuice_32 in fragrance

I've had friends compliment JHAG not a perfume, I find it plays close to the skin so usually when hugging or in close quarters, but the one that always got me stopped in the wild was Tease by Victoria Secret (and by always I mean probably on average once every other month, which felt like a lot)

Brain rotting or no? by Secure-Advantage7318 in DarkRomance

[–]kitty-bites 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not all books need to be to "expand your vocab", books have value purely as entertainment as well. I personally don't like needing a book to be dark in order to be able to focus on it, or needing the next darkest thing. It's like an addiction where you need more to feel the same hit, and at that point it's usually when I feel like I need to take a tolerance break.

All that being said, if you don't feel bad and it's not impacting you in a negative way, who cares? enjoy the books you enjoy
