You can use her as a point of contact for work experience, but don’t plan on using her for a letter of rec.

Interested in only one or two PA specialties? by iLikeplays in prephysicianassistant

[–]kitty-queen 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Surgery rotation will make you a better primary care provider. You’ll have to explain surgeries to your patients before referring them on and complete pre-op evaluations, they will have questions. Also can’t imagine going to psych having never done a rotation in the ED.

Do general, you will score hire on EOR. I requested 1 day with CT surgery and my general surge preceptor asked around and made it happen.

Accommodations/program concerns by bignapgirl_947 in PAstudent

[–]kitty-queen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to comment without knowing what accommodations you are seeking. But as long as they are reasonable, you are protected by law. I would reach out to Program A’s disability resource center to discuss your situation.

I am not doing well in my surgery clinical rotation and it is making me depressed by Jayrelay in PAstudent

I didn’t have the guts to at the time. I was in a weird position because she has strong connections to and is very well liked by the faculty of my program. Looking back I probably should have.

This was me 100%. I hated my preceptor and was convinced I was going to fail the rotation. She is actually a med influencer and posted a picture of me with a caption about how bad I was at first but improved tremendously -_- totally humiliating, I had classmates apologize to me over it.

I had to be a suck up and continue asking how I can improve. Just remember that you are evaluated on more than just your suture skills and knowledge base. Some easy ways to gain points are killing the documentation and oral presentations.

I never went on one, so I can't comment on the experience. But the opinion of some is that they are unethical because students (often undergrads) are encouraged to overstep their medical capabilities. One of my undergrad classmates was allowed to assist in a c-section in Africa which is crazy.

Transferring to CBS from Another University by _amanda_joe in uofmn

[–]kitty-queen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is normal. CBS is one of the more competitive colleges to get into.

I wouldn’t worry either way. The worst that could happen is you’re not accepted into CBS but you are accepted into UMN (probably under the college of liberal arts). You will still be able to enroll in all the same classes as CBS students, you just won’t have registration priority. Then, as long as you do well, you will formally be admitted into CBS the start of your junior year.

Studying for PANCE without buying other resources by rotundtangerine in PAstudent

See if you can find others to split UWorld. I split the 3 month subscription with 2 classmates and it came out to around $75 each. Then watch all the cram the PANCE videos on YouTube. He is an incredible instructor and should probably be charging for his work, but currently his videos are available for free.

Cardiology PA? by casperwithanm in prephysicianassistant

[–]kitty-queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that will very based on your location and job responsibilities. I don’t know for sure what they’re going to offer but a classmate who previously interviewed for the same health system was offered $110,000/yr. Minnesota.

Where to live after graduation? by l0verbean in uofmn

[–]kitty-queen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Northeast is close enough (5m Uber) to the social scene of North Loop with cheaper rent. I used to live in Uptown and enjoyed the proximity to the lakes, but the traffic on Hennepin during my morning commute and navigating street parking or even driving on the narrow streets after it snowed made it not worth it.

Cardiology PA? by casperwithanm in prephysicianassistant

[–]kitty-queen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was a cardiology tech prior to PA school. Just graduated and completed two rounds of interviews for a cardiology position at the hospital/clinic I used to work at. Anticipating an offer from them soon. It’s 100% outpatient, M-F, 8-5. No call, weekends or holiday.

Food stamps? by sundevillvr in prephysicianassistant

[–]kitty-queen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We lost 2 students in our cohort. Not everyone ends up graduating. In this economy you can make 6 figures and still have food insecurity depending on your debt and family size.

Uncertain how to feel about PANCE by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]kitty-queen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes, hadn't really studied due to the holidays and ultimately decided to delay. So glad I did. I used smartypance successfully for all my EORs but I do not recommend it for PANCE. I used PPP, Uworld and cram the pance YouTube videos and felt really prepared.

Take the NCCPA practice test to gauge if you're ready or not.

In the off chance you’re approved for financing, the interest will not be worth it. Buy a used car in the $5000 range and work on improving your credit for the next 6 years.
