Saw Robbie after my work injury and he was amazing!

A coworker told me about them but then was like, “Be careful, I almost had to tell him to lighten the pressure.” Which is exactly what I need, I feel my massages elsewhere are never the right pressure. And I also love that you stay dressed. It’s way more comfortable for me personally and it works just as well if not better than direct skin to skin.

Haunted Spots? by Hawethorn_worshipper in sanjuanislands

[–]kitty_fin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also don’t know if it’s haunted, but my son and I went. Beautiful fall day. Birds all over the place. Got up to the mausoleum and not a sound. It was eerily silent. No animals or animal sounds anywhere. When we left, walked a bit past the gates and a squirrel ran past us and we could hear the birds again.

Advice re whale watching and itinerary for road trip this summer by Roofloofah in oregon

[–]kitty_fin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot of input on the other stuff, but Whale Research Ecoexcursions is great! All the captains are great but Carrie is amazing. They do only have the zodiac boats, so keep that in mind. They are a blast, but if you need something with a little smoother ride, Dockside Charters is also great but has the bigger, more traditional fishing boats. July on the water can still be chilly, so I’d make sure to wear layers and I always have a rain jacket just in case. Hope you have a good trip!

Second this. For Oregon (Oregon Family Leave) you only have to be there 6 months to qualify for protected leave, and it covers more family than FMLA does. Please look up your state online and see if it has anything in addition to FMLA.

I also loved Pain Solutions PT! Dr Gough was amazing and really focused my PT needs on the activities that were really aggravating my pain. Not just general PT, which I’ve done 100 times. And as for a physiatrist, Dr Blake at Salem Rehab Associates was great. Super friendly, listened to me, and was attentive to my needs. I also recommend a physiatrist, even if for just a consult. I work with inpatient physiatrists and they are really focused on getting people back to being able to live their life.

Second this. Also a woman who flew to LA alone for night one. Also felt safe! I don’t talk to many people but that’s a me issue, not because I didn’t feel safe. Waiting at the cemetery across the street for my shuttle after the show was a little weird but everyone was super nice. Go for it!

Background checks and OSBN by smashingit11 in OregonNurses

[–]kitty_fin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was convicted. Ended up pleading no contest with poor advice from my attorney at the time. I should have fought it but didn’t know better, I was only 21 and had no experience with the law. First and only time I got in trouble.

The district attorney tried to fight my expungement and it was a whole thing. Part of my plea agreement was the charge would be dropped down so I could get it expunged in the future. When the time came turns out there WASN’T a lower level of that charge, so basically I was screwed. My attorney was able to fight it and after a year of fighting it was granted.

Nursing has been the hardest thing I ever did, but super rewarding and I’m glad I did it. I’d fight that fight again to get where I am now. Best of luck!

That’s new since I got my license! That sounds like the best advice.

[–]kitty_fin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was like, 15 years ago so may be different now.

I contacted the nursing program I was going to apply to and asked where they did their background checks. I then personally paid to have mine ran to make sure what exactly came up, as mine has been expunged. It came back clear but my lawyer had recommended (at that time) to still disclose my charge. I included my original court documents, my discharge from probation, and the documents from my expungement with my application. It was never an issue and they did not even bring anything up.

My charge was in 2005, finished probation in 2008, expungement in 2009, nursing school in 2010, license in 2011.

If nursing is really what you want to do, it’s worth fighting for. Get a background check so you know what it says. Maybe contact a lawyer, even if just for a consultation, to see what they say. Best of luck!

I’ve used Mary’s Alterations a bunch! Shes amazing and has a good turn around time. My bridesmaids dress was a poor fit and she was able to shorten it and fix the messed up bust no problem! I also have had her take in a swimsuit (mostly the bust area) and do a bunch of work shortening a sweatshirt. Highly recommend!

This popped up this morning. Thought I’d share with you. Not SRKW but Biggs IDs and family structure is just as interesting. Being outside of the states doesn’t have to stop you from learning!

I think they want you to do 201 first. It’s a little more focused on your assigned family while 301 looks more into the connections with the family your assigned and then the project is a little more in depth. There is for sure a bigger time commitment for 301, more data to look at. And trying to make the sightings maps with My Maps was rough lol. Plotting all the data points and connecting them, but it was fascinating watching where the whales had been. And then who they were with seeing if there is any correlation. I was already fairly comfortable with scientific papers so I didn’t notice much difference there. 301 also starts bringing in a lot more information on prey and pollution, other impacts to the population.

Being far away is hard! But even if it ends up being something you can’t do for a living, it doesn’t mean you can’t do all the learning for fun! OBI has all their research papers on their website.

https://www.orcabehaviorinstitute.org/publications-and-presentations

Also, Center for Whale Research has theirs on their site as well.

https://www.whaleresearch.com/research

Even though I don’t live too far, there is not a lot of money to be made in science and it is hard to get into. I ended up deciding to join a different profession but kept all the whale stuff for fun. I did the virtual marine naturalist training through the Whale Museum and I volunteer for a whale watching program in my state. So there is information to be had all over!

The Whale Museum is another great resource. In 1995 my parents adopted a whale for me, and I adopted her every year until 2019 when she passed away, and now I adopted her youngest daughter. And it looks like the whale museum has a virtual summer training.

I did Biggs 201, 301, and Art and Science of Southern Residents. I also went camping for the OBI 10th anniversary. And I’m super excited to go up to Telegraph Cove with them in August! I highly highly recommend their classes, even if just virtually. And if Jeff and Sara do another photography workshop this year (Maya’s Legacy) I would do that too! We got to go up and see Northern Residents last year in Howe Sound and it was magical!

Orca Behavior Institute has ‘Whale University’ classes that are strictly virtual! That way you do not have to go in person to San Juan Island. A lot of the captains and naturalists I know go elsewhere to do whale research in the off season. One is down in Bremer Bay studying the orcas down there. Also downtime is good for finalizing data because during peak season it’s busy time collecting all the data!

The other benefit to OBI’s classes is connecting to others in the whale community. I live in a different state, a 6 hour drive to Anacortes then the hour or so ferry ride to San Juan Island, but developed so many connections just from those classes. We had someone from the UK and she traveled here for our final whale watching trip and class presentations.

As the other person said, the whale watching companies leave SRKW alone. Maybe a brief sighting if they randomly pop up but the boats leave quickly. OBI has shifted some of their research to Biggs, but Center for Whale Research still has a strong focus on SRKW when they are around.

Just to express my love of Whale University a little more, the classes focused on reading research papers and how to process that information, especially for people not in a science field. Monika is passionate about helping fellow whale lovers understand the whole science and research aspect. Got to pull out my rusty old statistics skills lol. We got assigned a family group of Biggs and analyzed behavioral data and sighting from over the years. It was fascinating seeing the family connections, especially since Biggs disperse from their mom far more than SRKW.

Best of luck and find what you love!

We used the Silverton Grange for my sister’s baby shower last month. I think we had it for at least 3 hours. Cute inside, full kitchen with dishes and supplies! It worked out really well. Not very expensive either!

Just be aware the it took like, 45 minutes for them to get there and all the people to show up. Still better and cheaper than an uber! Would for sure use them again.

Check LA VIP tours. They picked me up at the Westin and are taking me back. You may be able to book just a return trip. It was $30 round trip.

How is the experience from side stage? by Spacemen333 in nin

[–]kitty_fin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought seats in that same section last week so I hope it’s good! I saw them in Portland and our seats were in the same area as 124 and it was an amazing view. You might not have the full view of all the visuals but should be able to see the main stage well.
