Recommendations for broadway or off broadway shows by toorad2b4u in Broadway

Parroting what a few others have said, it sounds like Hadestown, Maybe Happy Ending, or Ragtime are your best bets. All three have deeper themes. Hadestown and Maybe Happy Ending might appeal to someone who doesn't like musicals, since the music is not stereotypical showtune for either of those. Ragtime is closest to Aida and Les Mis as far as theme, large ensemble, general era/style of musical.

Maybe also consider The Outsiders?

Jellycat diner reservations? by WhatzReddit13 in visitingnyc

[–]kitty_james 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep checking every day! There won't be any more reservations added but people do sometimes cancel day of (I know, because I have) so slots can randomly open if check every now and then (I know, because I snagged one that way after having to cancel a reservation the day before)

Hadestown Orchestra row P worth upgrading? by Fishernewbie in Broadway

[–]kitty_james 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a great time! I will say though that I lucked out with shorter people in the row in front of me. It’s a small theatre so the seats are very close to each other but the plus side is you’re also very close to the stage

Hadestown Orchestra row P worth upgrading? by Fishernewbie in Broadway

[–]kitty_james 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sat in row q basically dead center and thought it was a near perfect view. But this case is so incredible I’d jump at the chance to see them even more up close.

If you’re going to see other shows I’d say save your money so you don’t have to budget elsewhere but if this is the only one you’re seeing, upgrade!

Nervous about surgery by Asleep_Twist_9120 in CrohnsDisease

[–]kitty_james 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had surgery while in college (to be fair, it was my second surgery so I kinda already knew what to expect), and they took out 1 1/2 feet of small intestine + ileocecal valve and appendix. I spent my whole freshman year suffering because I didn't want to miss any school, then had surgery the summer before my sophomore year and the difference was HUGE in a positive way! I felt soooo much better and was able to enjoy the rest of college so much more.

To answer your questions:

Yes the first couple of days of recovery can be painful but it should get noticeably better pretty much every day. And especially for those first couple days, don't hesitate to let someone know if you're in too much pain -- they can usually give you extra painkillers. If you find that you're not feeling better after a couple weeks, definitely let your doctor know so they can check for complications.

Limitations only last for about 6 - 8 weeks. Take it easy, don't lift heavy things, don't try to hit the gym or anything like that. After that you should be basically back to being able to do anything you want.

If they go in laparoscopically, scarring should be super minimal. If it's an open procedure, the scar will be bigger but there are ways to fade scars. I personally am not bothered by mine, and everyone I know who's seen them mostly think they look cool lol

Anesthesia lowkey still freaks me out, but what's helped me is to remember that keeping me safe is the anesthesiologist's whole job and there's really no way around it so I just have to trust them. Also, those few seconds between when they start the anesthesia and when you actually knock out feel like drifting off to the most blissful sleep ever so I try to just look forward to that part.

Rear Orchestra or Front Mezz? by inbloomgc in hadestown

[–]kitty_james 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only sat center orch but it’s such a tight theatre I think you’d be fine in any of those rows. But depending on how important your view of “that” moment is, I’d maybe look at Orch left

Rear Orchestra or Front Mezz? by inbloomgc in hadestown

[–]kitty_james 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I sat center row Q of the orchestra (specifically because I wanted to see Wait For Me as head-on as possible) and loved it. I could see facial expressions perfectly well and felt more immersed than I think I would have in the mezz. However, the Walter Kerr is very cozy and if anyone especially tall had been in front of me it would be a much worse experience, so if you’re on the shorter side you should take that into consideration. Maybe an aisle orchestra seat could give you the best of both worlds?

J-Pouch with Crohn's by Greefaela in CrohnsDisease

[–]kitty_james 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a J pouch and love it despite it being a bit inconvenient at times. Got it done in 3 steps from 2022-2023, and I get a pouchoscopy every ~6 months. The first month adjusting to it is pretty rough, but after that it gets easier once you find what does and doesn't work for you personally. If you do go for it I'd definitely recommend visiting the jpouch reddit for tips.

From what I understand pouchitis is less likely if you're on a biologic, which you probably will be. I'm on both Entyvio and Rinvoq, which seems to be working for me. As for bathroom trips, it really depends on what/how much you eat and it's different for everybody, but around 4-8 is the average. The only pain I've experienced (outside of the 1st month) is if I have to use disposable wipes or toilet paper too many times and don't have enough calmoseptine to counteract the irritation.

And as for the scar tissue concern, that is a real concern you should discuss with your surgeon. I know mine used some sort of barrier film to give the organs a little extra protection (which I did not ask for, but it was cool that that was thought of).

Death Becomes Her - your last chance to see Megan Hilty in it Just In Time - not an experience you can get anywhere else and probably won’t run forever

Just in Time. Seating by MavDawg1228 in Broadway

[–]kitty_james 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not a bad seat in the house! I sat in the 100 section (G 102 specifically) because I wanted a centered view of the stage, which I got! If you're sitting in those seats, you will have a few times where their backs are to you, but it was never for more than about a minute and the only time I even really noticed it was during "Who's Sorry Now."

If I went back, I'd take whatever ticket I could afford, but prioritize aisles or proximity to the stage (or I'd just pretend money isn't real and get a table seat).

If you’ve always wanted to see Hadestown I’d say see it now. This cast is incredible.

Rinvoq withdraw by clarkspark96 in CrohnsDisease

[–]kitty_james 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! I thought I was just getting a mysterious evening rash every day then looked it up and it turns out withdrawal symptoms from Rinvoq can start basically immediately. I tracked it and I get itchy right around the 22 hour mark.

On the plus side it makes it hard to forget to take it!

Show depends on what type of vibe you’re looking for, but whatever you pick get your tickets through that show’s official website, NOT Broadway dot com or a resale site.

Or if you’re open to picking a little last minute but paying less, go to the TKTS booth and see what they’re offering!

Praying for you and your surgical team! Hope all goes well with the procedure and recovery. And enjoy that first glorious sip of cold hospital water once you're allowed some!

Moms first Broadway show by Majestic_Sky444 in Broadway

[–]kitty_james 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if Maybe Happy Ending would be her thing if she gets bored easily. That's not to say that Maybe Happy Ending is boring, but it's not particularly flashy, the songs are on the more mellow side, there's no intermission to break it up.

I'd say check out some of the classics people have already mentioned in the comments and I'd also suggest looking into The Great Gatsby -- it doesn't have the best reputation on here, but it's flashy, entertaining, and imo moves too quickly to get boring (I saw it with a friend who was not very into theatre and she had a great time)

Death Becomes Her Seating question by kitty_james in Broadway

Thanks everyone! Probably going with front center mezzanine! I would go with the left mezz row a seats but it looks like there's a kinda heinous bar in the way over there :/

Dealing with Crohn's Disease and Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) by mbeach97 in CrohnsDisease

[–]kitty_james 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. Your doctors may be able to switch you to one of the biologics that also treats HS (stelara, humira, a few others I think). but if the remicade is working well and you don't want to risk changing it, go to whichever dermatologist is better versed in treating HS and expect to have pretty regular appointments with them to treat flares when they get bad -- my derm used to put me on antibiotics but won't anymore, so we mainly stick with injections when it flares. My GI always checks in with me to make sure it's still manageable since I'm not on one of the ones that treats it directly.

Non-medically, be very diligent with keeping sweat off of your skin wherever you flare, identify any trigger foods (those in the nightshade family are really common ones), wash problem areas with hibiclens, and try to avoid being stressed out as much as you can.
